Team 6A Team 6A 6A students learned firsthand how the Egyptians mummified their pharaohs. The Awesome A’s are continuing their journey through the ancient world with the study of China and the teachings of Confucius. It will indeed be an exciting and thought provoking ride! The students will spend several weeks studying China’s geography, the influence of Confucius, and the achievements of ancient China. The students will create posters about the impact Confucius had on China and analyze how the philosophy of Confucius affects their own world. As the quarter progresses, you may hear your child suddenly using a name such as Isocrates or Dionysia. If he or she claims to be an Athenian or Corinthian, it is due to a fun and exciting interdisciplinary unit on ancient Greece. The Awesome A’s will take a step out of the past and into the present and future during science classes as they explore environmental issues. Students will become very aware of how quickly the population has been increasing and will continue to increase throughout their lives. Using information from a website, they will be able to graph the world’s population from birth to 30 years of age. REUSE, REDUCE, AND RECYCLE! After learning about the importance of the three R’s, the students will put them into action by making paper and painting them with environmental messages. These will then be displayed to encourage others to practice the three R’s. In addition, the Hellenes will be preparing waste free lunches to protect our environment and to earn Hellaspoints. Team 6A The fun doesn’t end in Mrs. Zdralevich’s math classes, as students diligently work towards completing another Chapter from their textbook. Everyone is doing a great job with Chapter 4, and we’ll soon be making a smooth transition into Chapter 5. In math, students are primarily working on fractions, and in prealgebra, our focus is on equations and inequalities. In addition to staying on pace with the curriculum, students are practicing their writing skills by working on Short and Extended Response problems. ISAT’s are thrown into the mix this quarter, so students will be quite busy in the weeks ahead. Also, students were invited to participate in a great fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Information should have come home. Traditionally, this quarter tends to be the most demanding part of the year for students in both classes. Therefore, please encourage them to spend extra time outside of class to review and apply the concepts we are learning about. Keep up the good work team! The students on Team 6A are reading and writing better than ever. They have been reading fiction selections, answering a variety of questions, and practicing skills and strategies needed to increase their reading abilities. They are also preparing for ISATs. One way you might see your child practicing for state testing is by completing activities on Study Island. The outside reading book project this quarter will be their second speech of the year. Please help your child by arranging reading time, so he/she can manage the reading pace. In English, the students have been very busy writing. Students completed their Women’s History Essay using The Six Traits of Writing. Next, the students will be continuing their writing skills and exploring the persuasive form of writing. Our grammar focus this quarter is a pronoun review. Great job, 6A! Keep up the awesome work!! It’s hard to believe that it is already 3rd quarter! In Mrs. Bertucci’s class, the “Book It” reading program is coming to an end and those students that read at least two approved books a month will receive a signed certificate and extra rewards from Pizza Hut. Students have begun preparing for Reading ISATs and are making great progress. In Mrs. Bertucci’s math this quarter, students have learned how to interpret and solve word problems. Along with preparing for ISATs, evaluating fractions and solving algebraic expressions will also be addressed. Students will work to enhance their math skills while learning new concepts.
