My hope as the ASAP Chair is to “empower its members, promote academic excellence, and support members’ roles as current and future practitioners”. Through the collective efforts of the ASAP Board, I will work to provide opportunities for professional and leadership development, networking, social connections, community outreach, and discovery of dedication and passion to the profession. In November 2013, I joined the ASAP Leadership Team, with goals of serving its current members, recruiting new members, being an advocate for students in the Higher Education program, and maximizing the potential as a student organization. I have confidence in my ability to continue these initiatives as ASAP Chair. As a member of the ASAP team, I had the opportunity to serve on the 2014 SPYPLN Conference Planning Committee, assisted in planning social and professional development events, am currently developing a Student Affairs mentoring program, and met with members of administration providing feedback on behalf of the organization and students of the Higher Education program. The experiences that I’ve had thus far have provided me with a very strong foundation and I look forward to serving in a position that will provide me with a new experience and skills to continue making a difference in the lives of students. My blazing passion for the profession will aid me in upholding the mission, vision, and values of ASAP while fostering fruitful relationships with UWM and the Milwaukee community Josh Ramey Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: For those of you who don’t me; let me begin by saying that I am a “doer”. When I am involved with something I am all in with it and I give it 100%. Besides working in the UWM Inclusive Excellence Center I also have experience working with Housing and the Students with Disabilities Center at Whitewater. I have worked with LGBT groups, disability advocacy, and many other clubs in my time. As Chair I want to expand ASAP, get more involvement, and foster further outings with the group. If I am the voice of ASAP then I am also its ears so I will take the issues of our members and knock down a few doors if I need to. I stand for all of us. If you want a Chair that can and will take ASAP to the next level, well then look no further then the man with the bandanna. Administrative Coordinator Responsibilities of Administrative Coordinator (face-‐to-‐face member) • • • • Main organization contact Email communication Manages membership on PantherSync Keeper of meeting agendas and minutes Candidates for Administrative Coordinator Staci Bley Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐ Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: In my undergraduate institution at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh I was the Secretary for the Human Services Organization for two years. I have a lot of experience collaborating with others, reaching out to the community and creating a welcoming and inviting space for members. I always had a desire to be involved in ASAP but my commute held me back from participating. Since I will be living near campus in the fall I am looking forward to getting involved and networking with my fellow classmates and future professionals. My organizational ways and responsible nature makes me a great candidate that you will not regret having on ASAP committee! Gabrielle Grubb Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐ Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: I will be a new member to ASAP, however, I do have experience working in several student organizations in my undergraduate experience that would aid me in this position. I have been on the executive board for the National Residence Hall Honorary, InterHall Council, Suicide Hotline and Resident Assistant Council. The positions have varied from Vice President, Administrative Coordinator, Recognition Chair, Organization Liasion and Trainer. When involved in an organization I am very dedicated and attend as many functions as possible. I am extremely organized and find great joy in event planning and motivating my peers. I hope to become more involved in ASAP for networking and professional development experience. Gayle Smaller Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐ Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: Having served as the secretary for the Delta Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta and The United States Student Association as well as a founder and the inaugural recorder keeper for the Wisconsin Association of Black Men (WABM), I have learned that working from an administrative position of an organization is the best position to learn. Through my experiences, I not only learned the history of these great organizations, I worked to actively to create WAMB and to improve all these organizations. I learned Robert's Rules of Order in order to understand how to run an organization. I also created or amended the constitution and by laws of these organizations to help ensure further progression and room for future amending. I hope to be able to do the same with ASAP, understanding that restructuring and bylaw implementation is a long but necessary process. I believe my experience in helping restructure these other organizations will lend itself to ensuring the longevity of ASAP here at UWM. In this role of Professional and Alumni Development I want to help strengthen our connection with community and professional leaders. Online Representative Responsibilities of Online Representative (online member) • • Liaison for the Higher Education Administration online cohort Advocate for the online experience Candidates for Online Representative Brianne Coffey Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐ Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: It is with great interest that I am submitting my name for the Association of Student Affairs Professionals (ASAP) Online Representative officer position for the 2014-‐2015 academic year. As a graduate student in the online Higher Education Administration program, I understand the complexities of balancing student life in the online world with personal and work lives. As an INROADS intern with M&I Trust Company, I was nominated as a liaison for my cohort of interns to ensure retention and inform the interns of any organizational updates. In this volunteer position, I used email, social media, and phone to communicate with the cohort and our director. At the end of the summer, I coordinated a wrap-‐up dinner for the cohort, members of INROADS, and our internship sponsor. My prior experience working in student services and McNair Scholars Program has allowed me to develop and utilize effective outreach techniques for recruitment and retention. A professional goal is to provide student-‐centered outreach services that focus on retention in higher education. For ASAP, my goal is to help make the organization more visible and supportive for online students in the virtual environment. An opportunity to provide support is connecting online mentors or coaches with newer students in order to assist in the sorting out of relationships and higher order concepts that lead to student success. It would be an honor to advocate for fellow online graduate students. Dylan West Student Status: Graduate Academic Major/Program: Administrative Leadership-‐ Higher Education Administration Personal Statement: Hello! My name is Dylan West and I am finishing my first year as a graduate student at UW-‐ Milwaukee in the Higher Education Administration program. As an undergraduate, I majored in an idea. I studied Psychology and Exercise Science as a way to understand how physical and mental health correlate together to better understand the human condition. Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I have been fully employed at Iowa State University in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences while obtaining my Master’s Degree. My motivation and viewpoint on Higher Education is that I believe we are all unique in our own way. Everyone views the world differently therefore our perception becomes the strongest quality about us. The lives we lead, the people we meet, and the job we want are all influences on the philosophy we develop for ourselves. My circumstances in life differ from those around me, but that is a gift because my life becomes a story only I can tell. It is with this perspective, I hope to one day uphold the title of Dean of Students. By being an online student, it is hard to form that connection with a school that you do not attend in person and I want to bridge that gap we see between students who are taking courses online and the students who physically attend UW Milwaukee. Though new specifically to ASAP, I want to create that connection and experience for all students by upholding the Online Representative position.
