Schoollinks letter King George VI memorial School Dear schools, We as King George VI wanted to keep you updated about the life here in KG6. Our school term began on the 10th of January 2012. We welcomed our 39 members of staff to the New Year. We have three relief teachers who are standing in for two of our teachers on maternity leave and one who is on manpower development at UCE. The enrolment stands at 345 pupils. It is an inclusive school for nondisabled, disabled and learning disabled children. The school offers both Primary from ECD to grade 7 and secondary school from form 1 to form 4, both offering deaf education to seniors and juniors. The major events of the term are as follows: On Wednesday the first of February the school inspection for the primary school visited us. The week after the primary school, on Thursday 9th February 2012 the secondary school had their school inspection. This is mainly to help the school staff to develop and to help grow professionally. STAFF DEVELOPMENT @ KGVI In an effort to keep the staff members updated and aware of the different disabilities here at KGVI a workshop was held on how to help and support the children with different disabilities. The members of staff including the student-teachers on attachment attended the workshop. The workshop was being facilitated by the therapy department of KGVI. School trips @ KGVI On the 8th of March, Progress Class and grade 3 PH went on a trip to Hillside Dams. This was a trip with our two Belgium students, the two class teachers, class assistants, a student- teacher from UCE and 25 children. Everybody loved the trip. The children played a lot and they enjoyed being outside. They saw the nature and the living creatures. School link & KGVI We started working on the SchoolLinks project with Jonghelinckshof through Internet and a pen pal system. We are doing this with the progress class, which is a class made up of children with learning difficulties. Not only the pupils, but also the senior teachers are learning how to work with the computer and internet. They have received their own e-mail address, and in the future they will start communicating with their pen pals in Jonghelinckshof. On Monday 27th February 2012, we had planning meeting for our mentorship workshop with two officials from VVOB, some school link team members, the head, deputy head and two students from Belgium. We will plan this workshop at the end of this term. Sport @ KGVI On Friday 9th March 2012, our infants put on their tracksuit and had their annual sports day. All the children from Grade 0 until Grade 2. Not only were the parents of the children invited, but also the other classes of primary school. Everybody was cheering for their favorite runner. On Wednesday 14th March the seniors’ students of our Primary school had their sports day. It was an active day with a lot of joy and laughter. Other events @ KGVI We will have our mentorship workshop on the 3th and 4th of April. We will work together with VVOB, UCE, Hillside College, Bulawayo Polytech, Saint Gabrielle, Saint Pius (that offers training for nursery and ECD teachers), platform college and Mavambo in Harare. The workshop will last for two days were we will talk about: what we expect from a student and a mentor, the expectations of the school, the expectations of the different colleges. This workshop will improve the relationship between not only student and mentor, but also the school and the different colleges. On Thursday 29th March we will have our culture day. Everybody will be dressed in traditional African clothing; there will be typical African food, dances and so much more. It’s a way to end our first term in style. In the next term, we will have visitors from Jonghelinckshof. Two speech therapist will visit us for two weeks. So the exchange of experience and the strengthening between our schools will go on. The preparations are underway...
