Sheila, and their children into the Temple Solel family as we usher in an exciting new era in the history of our
congregation.
The old Yiddish song I first heard at my Grandpa Max’s house as a young girl “Vu Ahim Zol
Ikh Geyn” (Where can I go) kept creeping in my head when Joel and I first came to
Hollywood, Fla. from Brooklyn, NY. We came here with Robb, our first baby, when he was 3
months old. Joel had been just discharged from the Army after spending 2 years as the
Dermatologist at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. We arrived here free of all obligations. It
was a hard decision to leave our family and friends to make a new life in Florida, but it was
the best decision we ever made. We joined a group that was in formation to make a new
Shul, a new Temple. We had meetings in a trailer in the parking lot where Temple Solel now
stands. We had services at Hillcrest Country Club. We made friends who we came to love,
and we met our Rabbi who we came to love.
We later had two more sons, Gregg and Seth. As our lives continued and the Temple evolved,
it sweetened our lives to the extent that I realized our odyssey of coming to Solel was meant to
be. We worked so hard for Solel – being on the Board and doing many fundraisers with our
friends which culminated in the fabulous 5 shows we produced that were initially performed
at Hollywood Hills High School and eventually were performed at the Broward Center for the
Performing Arts.
Our three sons all became Bar Mitzvah at Solel. They were confirmed and graduated from
Solel, and were all married by Senior Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Frazin. Our grandchildren were
given Hebrew names here, and experienced Brit Milah. Joel and I were “remarried” by Rabbi
Frazin on our 40th Wedding Anniversary at a party given by our children and their families.
Life revolved around this Temple. All of our friends were members, and our friendships
solidified when Rabbi Frazin led us on a trip to Israel in the 1970s. Most of us are still
members of Solel. YES! Still members! We will always remember that the Shul is what in our
early days gave us a place to feel comfortable, where we made our first friends, where our
children were educated in the way of Judaism, and where we still feel comfortable and
belong.
So, Grandpa Max… I knew where to go.
I am Lynda Wilentz. I am a Pathfinder… I AM SOLEL.

Summer Edition 4
Rabbi’s Corner
My dear friends,
Change is inevitable. As I’ve mentioned before in my
Pathfinder messages, I feel blessed in retirement with
the opportunity to be able to teach ‘World Religions’ to
students who attend Broward College’s Central Campus
in Davie. I look forward to each semester. When we begin
talking about Buddhism, I discuss life’s impermanence. For
nothing we experience in life remains the same. We don’t
remain the same. In Buddhism, this is called “Anichcha.”
In our everyday lives everything and everyone changes.
To think that all is static, never changing, is an illusion.
I used to have a Philosophy professor who would lecture
about all objects being in flux and would declare that his
desk was made up of molecules that were merely an illusion
we call a desk. Consequently, one day, a few of us decided
to remove his desk from the classroom. Immediately upon
entering his room, he said, “O.K. Who’s the wise guy?”
“Why professor?” We queried. He then asked, “Where’s
my desk?” we answered, “It’s right there professor, can’t
you see it?”’ Finally, if we wanted to pass the course, we
relented and returned “the molecules,” or rather the desk,
to its proper place.
My friends, in our four thousand year history since the time
of Abraham and Sarah, our Judaism has been in flux. Our
world, geopolitically, is forever changing. Just as there are
different seasons in each year so it is there are changes
that occur constantly in each of our lives.
In addition, I can’t believe how much our technology is
different from when I was a child or even from the time
I retired as the rabbi of Temple Solel almost nine years ago.
Someone recently exclaimed to me, “I can’t believe that
I can carry a telephone with me in my pocket that has my
calendar on it; the weather forecast; the latest news; instant
messaging; e mail; and I can even watch television on it or
listen to my favorite music. And now, I can have all of that
and more in a wrist watch. How did it happen, where did
this idea come from?” Instead of saying to that person, it
was provided for us by the late Steve Jobs or the Apple
Corporation, I simply answered, “It was started by Dick
Tracy!” It began in my youth as something mythical and is
now very real. It can be a blessing or a nuisance.
Founding Rabbi Emeritus
Robert P. Frazin D.D.
In 45 years of Temple Solel’s existence, numerous changes
have taken place.
And now, I believe we are well-blessed in our beautiful
Temple with a very special change, our outstanding new
spiritual leader, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin.
I am delighted that he applied for and accepted the
position of Senior Rabbi of Temple Solel. Rabbi Salkin is
highly creative. He is a published author; a scholar; a fine
teacher; devoted to the perpetuation of the State of Israel;
articulate and a warm and caring and thoughtful rabbi. He
expresses a deep sense of spirituality that will comfort
and console those who are caught up in the challenges of
changes in their personal or public lives. Prior to coming to
our Temple, he served congregations that are highly familiar
to me because I used to visit them when I was a regional
director for the Reform movement before the creation of
Solel.
Moving Forward
This summer, Temple Solel will be saying farewell to our current Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Jeffrey Kurtz-Lendner, and
welcoming our incoming Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin. The job of Temple Solel's Transition Committee is to help
our congregation make this change, in every way we can. Of course, during this transition period, each and every one
of us will feel something different. We will learn from one another, and we will all work together with the common
goal of ensuring a bright and long future for Temple Solel.
As many of you know, Rabbi Salkin was the overwhelming choice of our Rabbinic Search Committee to fill our Senior
Rabbi position. For those of you who have already seen him in action, you know he is both an amazing preacher and
a wonderful teacher. For those of you who have not seen, heard, or met Rabbi Salkin yet, we hope that you will do so
soon. Importantly, we hope ALL of you in our temple community, whether you have already met Rabbi Salkin or not,
will assist us in introducing Rabbi Salkin, his wife Sheila, and their four children to our family of Solel and to the South
Florida community in general. I am pleased and proud to welcome our Temple’s new
Rabbi and his wife Sheila to our Family of Solel. May he
bring his dynamic insights and sense of innovation as well
as his vast knowledge of the heritage of Israel and his deep
commitment to the State of Israel to every man, woman
and child in our Temple and our South Florida community.
May he go from “strength to strength” in fulfilling the needs
of our Temple family.
To do this, over the next 18 months, the Transition Committee will host various opportunities for the entire
congregation to get to know and learn from Rabbi Salkin. For example, we will have monthly coffee meetings, social
hours before or after Shabbat services, and dinners at congregants' homes, just to name a few. We encourage anyone
and everyone associated with Temple Solel to get involved and also to invite non-members to meet Rabbi Salkin, and
see all that Solel has to offer.
A colleague of mine recently wrote: “Change isn’t always
easy. But one of the ways we can understand G-d is as
change itself. When Moses asks the burning bush,’ Who are
You?’ G-d is heard declaring, “ehyeh asher ehyeh, I will be
what I will be.” In other words, the voice of G-d declares,
“I am change and transformation.”
The Transition Committee is always available to answer any questions congregants may have. Whether you are taking
an adult education class at Temple Solel, attending a Friday evening Shabbat service, planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah
or other life cycle event, we and Rabbi Salkin want you to be part of the family of Solel. We also welcome you to host
any of our upcoming events, including a congregant dinner--just contact us at your convenience--and hope that you
will be our guest at any of the other events we have planned!
If we follow the G-dly teachings of our Judaism and our
new rabbi, I believe we shall achieve positive changes in our
lives.
Rabbi Salkin will begin his tenure at Solel on August 1, 2015 with a Saturday morning service at 10:30, and we are
so excited for what the future will bring!
As we experience those changes in the New Year 5776, may
we do so with hearts filled with hope and promise and the
blessing that is Shalom, the blessing that is peace.
All the best,
The Temple Solel Transition Committee
My dear Family of Solel, Penny and our children and
grandchildren join me in wishing all of you who are dear to
us a happy and healthy and spiritually rewarding summer.
B’Shalom,
Bob
Rabbi Robert P. Frazin D.D.

Summer Edition 6
The Journey of Jewish Learning
I would like to imagine where we all will be by the time
you read this article. It’s hard to believe that another year
has passed and it’s summer time again!
Where are you planning to be this summer? It is my
hope that you will be resting and relaxing after a long
year filled with lots of learning, joy and incredible
new experiences. I had the privilege to be invited
to participate in a special program at Yad Vashem,
Jerusalem. This program will give me tools to develop
meaningful learning programs while teaching about the
Holocaust to our middle and high school students. The
journey of learning doesn’t have an end, and therefore
I’m excited that these opportunities are crossing my way.
While being in Israel, I will connect with our community
partners in Nesher, and will try to find ways to keep our
students connected throughout the year.
Also, during this summer, I will be redesigning our
7th Grade through 12th Grade program. The Shlishi
School is a new program that will involve 7–12 Grade
students. Students in these grades will meet every
Tuesday (Yom Shlishi) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. During
these two hours they will participate in a formal and
non-formal educational program. The goal of this
program is to:
a. Bring renewed depth and meaningful learning to
our middle and high school students to reduce the
staggering rates of post-B’nai Mitzvah dropout
b. Develop and implement Jewish learning based on
teens’ interests
c. Create Jewish educational experiences at every stage
of life, both formally and informally to help teens feel
connected to their Jewishness
For the formal component, we will have trimester
sessions, and students will be choosing electives based
on their focus of interest. To open a module, we will need
a minimum of 7 students enrolled in each module. During
the summer, my goal will be to work with each facilitator
to develop a module that will make an impact in our
student’s life. Students enrolled in the 7th Grade class
who didn’t have their B’nai Mitzvah yet, will need to be
enrolled in the B’nai Mitzvah Tutorial module. If
the student already mastered the necessary skills to
perform their B’nai Mitzvah, they will have the option
to enroll in a different elective.
Valeria Michanie
Modules will include the following:
• Tutorial for B’nai Mitzvah: for students who need
tutorial support for their B’nai Mitzvah

Our Confirmation students (10th Graders) will meet with
Rabbi Jeff Salkin while these electives occur, and then
we will be ready for the informal part of the program.
The informal component will include a social time where
teens will share dinner and discuss and plan for different
social action events, and will participate in activities
that encompass Jewish values, and traditions. This
program will be led by a Youth Group advisor under the
supervision of the Educational Director.
Custodial Parent’s Name:
Another important element of this program is that we
will be opening the program to the community as a
whole. All Post B’nai Mitzvah students, not affiliated
to any synagogue, will be able to join us at a different
fee. Please, don’t hesitate to share this program with
your friends and neighbors! This could be an incredible
opportunity to build up our teen program and to grow
our Youth Group at Solel.
Three years ago, when I joined this wonderful community,
one of our teens, Noah Brilliant met me at Camp
Coleman and asked me to help Temple Solel bring back
their youth to shul. Noah is leaving for college, and I
feel we are planting seeds to make this happen. Yet, I
couldn’t fulfill his dream.
As we embark on a new journey planning for an exciting
year at Temple Solel, I’m asking you to please enroll
your children into this program. I’m asking you to make
contributions to the Youth Fund so we can hire a Youth
Advisor, and I’m also asking you to be involved in any
possible way!

we know that students learn best, when they are truly

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon at ART/Solel featuring a live art performance by artist Daniel Pontet,
IMPULSE ART and a fusion of music and painting along with six-time Grammy winner master Federico Britos.
Daniel Pontet created 2 beautiful pieces of art during the Sisterhood luncheon. One of the pieces was auctioned
off at the luncheon with the intention that the piece would become property of the Sisterhood. After various
pledges from the guests at the luncheon, the piece raised a sum of money in an amount over $1,300. The artist,
Daniel, generously agreed to donate 50% of the pledges to the Sisterhood and then also, decided to donate
the other piece to the Temple, outright. We are excited about both pieces and thrilled that Mr. Pontet was so
generous with not only his time for the performance, but also in allowing us the opportunity to have his pieces
displayed at the Temple. A big SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU to Daniel Pontet for working with us and for his generous donation of
his Star of David painting, and of course everyone listed below for your effortless time, commitment and your
donations and sponsorships to ensure the success of this wonderful event.
Committee
Brotherhood membership is $50 and checks can be sent directly to the Temple. We're

Chloe Minars is a 7th grade honors student at University School. She has been a
dedicated competitive cheerleader for over five years. She has traveled the country
with her team, Florida Triple Threat, and has even won several first place national
titles. When she is not studying, or training at her cheer gym, she is spending
time with her family and friends or baking. She is a compassionate, kind, and
loving daughter, sister and friend. She helps children with special needs through
an organization called The Friendship Circle. For her Bat Mitzvah, Chloe will be
traveling with her family throughout Southern California. Fun at Solel
Join us at Temple Solel’s Anne Arditti Early Childhood Center,
where we nurture and educate children through a blend of secular
and Judaica learning designed to meet each child’s physical,
emotional, intellectual and social needs.
Our curriculum is based on the belief that children learn best by
actively taking part in their learning. The curriculum meets the
children’s interests, needs and family cultures, while providing the
building blocks to continuing development. The goal in our
school is to help the children discover ‘the magic of play.’

FUN AT SOLEL
PRESCHOOL
Valeria Michanie & Bibi Nazim
Maztah Factory
Our preschool at Temple Solel had an incredible year filled with learning and exciting changes. A few
months ago when school was just about to start, we, along with our staff, felt the need to find a new
educational direction — a renewal — and so we embarked on a journey that has been extremely inspiring
and rewarding.
Model Seder
Our amazing professional staff has been specializing in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, with the support of
organizations like CAJE, The Broward Early Learning Coalition and professionals in the educational field.
We visited model schools like Temple Beth Shalom in Miami Beach and our in-house staff developed over
10 hours of professional development. We all agreed on the value of pursuing the National Accreditation
(NAEYC), and we started with baby steps, to make sure every change had a strong intention and a clear
educational goal. We strengthened our Jewish curriculum and over the year we celebrated all of the Jewish
holidays in unique ways. Our staff, children and parents have all enjoyed this journey and there is much
more to do!
Over the year, we planned exciting programs trying to build a deep awareness of community. Our first goal
was to bring parents back to school while involving them in school and temple life. Our PTTO organization
grew and created a strong sense of belonging. Throughout the year they planned several family programs
and fundraising events. Their ultimate goal was to support us in building community and to fundraise for
a new playground.
Family Passover Experience
The preschool playground has been “The Dream Project.” Today, thanks to a generous donation from
long-time temple member Joyce Bloch, our dream will come true. This renovation will help our school grow
and achieve its accreditation sooner. How amazing it is to be part of this community, and to have members
that care for the future of this congregation! These children will indeed build up the future of Temple Solel.
As summer arrives, we are getting ready for an amazing summer camp experience, planning for water play,
fun shows and lots of wet learning experiences. We will have the honor to have many of our own teens
volunteering for summer camp at Temple Solel preschool. So what can be better than that?
Preschool Family Passover
As the preschool continues to grow, we would like to invite you to stop by and visit our school, count the
smiles and share your temple experiences with our new families. Please support all preschool funds and
invest in the future of Temple Solel!

Caring for the environment is an important Jewish value — we need your help in supporting
this work at Temple Solel! Here are 9 reasons why we need a Green Committee:
1. Celebrating the ways Jewish holidays are connected to the environment
2. Transmitting knowledge about how Jewish texts have addressed environmental issues
in the past and why it is relevant today
3. Looking at everyday practices at the Temple to figure out more sustainable ways of doing business 4. Making sure all groups and the Temple administration become more environmentally conscious
5. Holding an annual Green Shabbat around the time of the Torah telling of the story of Noah
to help us think about how central environmental concerns are to Judaism
6. Helping plant the Temple garden and grow food for our children
7. Assisting the social action committee with environmental activities as part of the Annual Mitzvah day event
8. Inviting Jewish environmentalists to come speak to the congregation
9 Connecting environmental work here at Temple Solel to environmental work at other congregations
in our area and to other Jewish communities around the country and world
Do you have an idea for a 10th reason why we should have a Temple Solel Green Committee
or just want to get involved? Please contact Valeria, [email protected].
We would love to get your help!!!
