August 14 - 20 - St. James` Church

August 14, 2016
Invitations & Information
Dear friends,
Extraordinary things can happen in Ordinary Time — that is, in these particular weeks of the Church
year (so-called because they are “numbered,” not because they are mundane or unimportant). In fact,
it’s often the extraordinary things in life that bring our attentions to God in the first place: the splendors
of a new birth or marriage, the grief of a loss, an exasperation and anger over world events, a curiosity
or feeling that defies explanation... And what do we do here? The simple work of recalling the stories of
Jesus’ life and ministry and returning to the traditions that help us to feel grounded in the certainty of
God’s persistent providence and extraordinary love. It’s what Christians have done for a very long time,
in all kinds of places and circumstances.
Above, a view of the High
Altar during our Candlelight
Communion service, every
Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
Perhaps you are a long-time St. James’ parishioner and have worshiped faithfully from the First to the
Seventh to the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, or perhaps today is your first day in this place (it’s the
13th Sunday since we celebrated the gift of the Holy Spirit, but who’s counting?). While it’s not always
glitzy and it’s not always a thrill, offering our praises and supplications (even if we think them ho-hum)
helps us to live in God’s time. We hope you will be moved ever more deeply into that way of being with
God in Christ — in the liturgy of our worship, in service to each other and our neighbors, in fellowship
with other parishioners, and in your own study — in this and every season.
In Christ,

About today’s celebration
In today’s liturgy, we are confronted with some of Jesus’ hardest words.
As he traveled toward Jerusalem, certain of the great crisis that lay
ahead, Jesus set forth the serious nature of discipleship. He referred to
his approaching death as his “baptism.” He revealed that faithfulness
to God would produce opposition and division.
Again, we hear from Isaiah in one of his best passages. In order to
reach his audience he presents a parable about a vineyard that refuses
to produce grapes and gets the audience’s agreement that it should be
destroyed. Then he tells the people that Judah is God’s vineyard and
has been unfruitful.
In the reading from Paul’s letter to the Hebrews (not heard in today’s
liturgy, but appointed for the day), we are assured that regardless of the
opposition and division which faithfulness to God may bring, we have
hope. That hope is based first on the record of God’s faithful people
in the past, but is based above all on the record of Jesus. The “cloud of

As we gather in Eucharist, we are indeed surrounded by the witness of
those in ages past whose faith in God led them to hard and tough decisions. In Christ and with each other the joys and the hard disciplines of
faith are united. We recall Christ’s death and resurrection and our own
incorporation into his dying and rising, which began in us in baptism.

Prayers for the week
O God of peace, who taught us that in returning and rest we shall be
saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: By the might
of your Spirit lift us, we pray, to your presence, where we may be still
and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summer Reading and Fall Guest
This fall, St. James’ will welcome Lisa Miller for a discussion on her
book, The Spritual Child, which explores the science and power of
spirituality and illustrates how invaluable spirituality is to a child’s
mental and physical health. Miller offers practical advice for parents,
giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their family’s
well-being. Buy your copy from the receptionist to support St. James’!
“But I prayed yesterday!”
Prayer is one of those spiritual exercises that, whether we think we’re
any good at it or not, we know we’re supposed to practice. Whether
we’re “there” yet or not, we probably know that conversation with
God is meant to be part of our daily lives, every day. But what about
the practice of offering our financial resources? Practicing stewardship
is a kind of conversation with God that we are meant to engage in
every single day. Proportional giving helps to make us more aware of
what we’ve been given and what we can spare for the work of God.
What percentage of your income is God calling you to give? Visit
stjames.org/stewardship to make your 2016 commitment. Questions? Contact our stewardship office at 212-774-4243 or [email protected].
Pastoral Notes & Prayer Requests
Holding one another’s joys, sorrows, and concerns before God in prayer is a spiritual practice that characterizes our life together at
St. James’. In our worship services, we pray each other’s prayers together. Outside of our time together, many parishioners make
it part of their daily lives to pray the prayers of the parish community. You are invited to participate in your own way.
