More than 80 local children learned about healthy eating and the importance of nutritious food Monday
thanks to a partnership between the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown and the Walmart
Foundation.
With a $30,000 grant from the Foundation, local low-income families were given the opportunity to
learn about the benefits and importance of nutritious eating through interactive games and activities,
CSK said in a statement.
Monday’s menu included fresh, local grown plums, raspberries, and cucumbers. Representatives from
America’s Grow-A-Row were on hand to lead the kids in tasting and learning about the foods’ origins.
In addition to the Monday event, the grant will enable the Community Soup Kitchen to keep its doors
open year-round, feeding hundreds of residents who need a hot meal and help getting back on their
feet. The soup kitchen also provides a free Farmers Market four times a week and summertime meals
for children not in school.
“Fresh fruit and vegetables are more expensive than less nutritious food alternatives. It is almost
impossible for low-income families or families on food stamps to get fresh produce. One of the Soup
Kitchen’s goals is to get fresh food into the community,” said Terry Connolly, Executive Director of the
Community Soup Kitchen, in a statement.
