!! AUDITIONS !! Next term the topic for Key Stage 2 will be ‘What A Performance’ and, as part of this, we will all be working on a production of ‘The Lion King Kids’. We will start work on the production straight after the Easter break, with performances taking place on 14th and 15th July. There are lots of ways you can be involved: performing to designing, lighting to mask making and many more. Anybody in KS2 who wants to perform in ‘The Lion King Kids’ can. Being part of a show is really exciting. It can help to build your confidence, you can make new friends and you will work with a team of people to make something incredible. There are lots of main characters in the show who all have lines. Some of them also have solo singing parts. Before Easter we need to decide who will play the main parts so that we can give out scripts before the holidays. Attached to this letter are descriptions of all the main characters to help you decide which parts you might like to audition for. It doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl for any of the parts. To play one of the main roles, you must be prepared to spend time at home learning your lines and practising your songs. You will also need to do some extra rehearsals after school. Nearer to the performances, we will probably need you to rehearse at the weekends too. Wherever possible, we will try to work around any existing clubs or activities you already do. The auditions for the main parts will be on Tuesday 21st March If you would like to audition to play any of the main characters, please fill in the slip below and return it to the school office by Tuesday 14th March. We will then give you information about what to prepare for your audition so you have time to practise over the weekend. If you would like to perform in the show, but you don’t want to have a main part, that’s absolutely fine. We will need lots of children to play the animals of the Pridelands and sing with the chorus in lots of the songs. You won’t need to audition, but it would be great if you could let us know that you want to be part of this exciting production. ✂————————————————————————————————————————————— Name: _________________________________ Year: _______________________ I would like to be considered for the following parts in The Lion King Kids: Choice 1: ________________________________________________________ Choice 2: ________________________________________________________ Choice 3: ________________________________________________________ I would be happy to play any of the other main characters Yes / No (please circle) If you would like to perform in The Lion King Kids, but you don’t want a main part, please fill in your name and year above and tick this box 🀆 MAIN CHARACTERS The main characters in ‘The Lion King Kids’ (in the order they appear on stage) are: RAFIKI Rafiki is a wise and intelligent mandrill (monkey) who watches Simba grow up and offers him advice on his journey. In ‘The Lion King Kids’, the role of Rafiki is split into 5 different parts, who all act as the narrators of the story. To play one of the Rafikis you will need to be confident and be able to speak loudly and clearly. You will also need to talk directly to the audience and work well in a team. Singing: The Rafikis have some solo singing lines in “Circle of Life” and they sing together in “He Lives in You”. MUFASA Mufasa is a strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. As the king, Mufasa must command respect on stage and show himself as the leader. To play the character of Mufasa, you must be able to perform as a mature and strong character. Singing: The character of Mufasa has no solo singing. SARABI Sarabi is Simba’s mother. She is the Queen of the Pridelands and is very motherly and caring towards Simba. The character of Sarabi only has a few lines, but appears in several scenes. Singing: The character of Sarabi has no solo singing. ZAZU Zazu is a hornbilled bird who is a loyal assistant to Mufasa. He always tries to do his best and is very proud of his job, but he is also very nervous and worries about everything. To play this part, you must be able to show a lot of different emotions clearly on stage. Singing: The character of Zazu has solo lines in “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” but they are spoken rather than sung. SCAR Scar is the main villain of the story. He is a jealous and coldhearted lion who is Mufasa’s brother and Simba’s uncle. Scar will stop at nothing to become the new king of the Pridelands. Scar is very intelligent with a villainous dark side. Scar is one of the biggest parts in The Lion King Kids. To play Scar, you must be happy to play a mean and nasty character and be prepared to learn quite a lot of lines! Singing: Scar is the main singer in the song “Be Prepared”. YOUNG SIMBA Young Simba is the hero of the story. He is an adventurous and curious young lion who is daring and filled with energy. Young Simba is playful and cheerful at the beginning, but after the death of his father, Mufasa, he feels ashamed and afraid. The character of Young Simba has lots of lines and lots of solo singing so you must be very confident and happy to work very hard if you want to play this part. Singing: Young Simba is the main singer for “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and sings parts of “Hakuna Matata (Part 1)”. SIMBA Simba is the grown up version of Young Simba, who shows more complicated emotions now that he is grown up. To play Simba, you must be able to show a lot of different emotions and be strong enough to defeat Scar at the end of the show. Singing: Simba sings parts of “Hakuna Matata (Part 2)” and has solo lines in “Can you Feel the Love Tonight”. YOUNG NALA Young Nala is a courageous lioness who is Young Simba’s best friend. She is very confident and is not afraid to say what she thinks. Singing: Young Nala sings part of “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” with the chorus. NALA Nala is the grown-up version of Young Nala and is a more mature part. She goes in search of Simba and convinces him to return home and take on Scar. Singing: Nala has solo singing in “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. HYENAS (Banzai, Shenzi and Ed) Banzai is one of the Hyena trio. He would be the leader…if hyenas weren’t so lazy! Banzai is nasty and gruff, but he can be funny too. Shenzi is a confident hyena who is always looking out for herself. Shenzi laughs a lot so to play this character, you must be able to change from joking around to being nasty. Ed is the third member of the Hyena trio and communicates through laughter. Ed has a loud, cackling laugh and shows a lot of emotion in his expressions and body language. To play this part you will need to be very expressive but you will not have lots of lines to learn. As the Hyena trio is made up of three characters, you will need to perform well together and work as a team. Singing: The hyenas all have lines in the song “Be Prepared” but they are spoken rather than sung TIMON Timon is a meerkat who lives in the jungle with his best friend Pumbaa. Timon is quite jumpy and afraid of a lot of things, but he pretends to be a confident and relaxed leader. Timon is one of the funniest characters in the story and so to play this part you need to be able to be funny, but stay in character all the time. Singing: parts of “Hakuna Matata (part 1 and part 2)” parts of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Luau Hawaiian Treat”. PUMBAA Pumbaa is a kind, sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple lifestyle of relaxation. Pumbaa is a laidback character with a good sense of humour. When he is making jokes, he usually keeps a very straight face so you will need to be able to stay very serious while people are laughing. Most of Pumbaa’s song lines are spoken rather than sung. Singing: parts of “Hakuna Matata (part 1 and part 2)”, parts of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Luau Hawaiian Treat”.
