The Tokyo University of Commerce was renamed the
Tokyo University of Industry.
The Institute of Research in East Asian Economy
was renamed the Institute of Economic Research.

The Tokyo Commercial School was renamed the
Higher Commercial School and offered a 5-year
course, the first year of which was a preliminary to
the 4-year main course.
The Special Course in Accounting was renamed the
Accountant School.
Offered a 1-year preparatory course and a 3-year
main course. Course duration of the preparatory
course changed to 2 years in 1891 but reverted to 1
year in 1893.
Changed the affiliated Institution for Training
Apprentices in Commerce and Industry to the
Institute for Training Apprentices in Mechanics and
transferred it to the Tokyo School of Mechanics (the
Tokyo Higher Industrial School, the predecessor of
the present Tokyo Institute of Technology).
Established the affiliated School of Foreign
Languages.
Established the Specialized Course, a preparatory
course for the first year, followed by 3 years of a
main course, then proceeding to a 1-year specialized
course.
Established the Institute for Training Teachers of
Commerce. The Institute for Training Teachers of
Commerce was abolished in May 1949.
The affiliated School of Foreign Languages was
renamed Tokyo School of Foreign Languages and
separated from the Higher Commercial School.
Course duration of the Specialized Course changed
to 2 years, which was the same period offered
by the Imperial University (the predecessor of the

The Tokyo Higher Commercial School was renamed
the Tokyo University of Commerce. In addition to
the undergraduate course, a preparatory course, an
affiliated Business College, and a Training School for
Business Teachers were established, the study term
at each being three years.
More than half of the buildings at Hitotsubashi
in Kanda were destroyed by the Great Kanto
Earthquake.
Started the main course at the campus in Kanda and
the preparatory course at the Shakujii Campus.
Established the affiliated Institute for Business
Accounting Training.
Celebrated the University’s 50th anniversary.
Established the University Library.
The Business College and Training School were
transferred to a temporary campus in Kunitachi.
The main building and administration offices were
transferred to Kunitachi.
The Institute for Business Accounting Training was
abolished.
The so-called Rojo Incident broke out in response to
a proposal to abolish the preparatory course and the
Business College.
The preparatory course was transferred to the
Kodaira Campus.
Established the Institute of Research in East Asian
Economy.
As World War II intensified, the preparatory course
was shortened to 2 years.
Established the affiliated Industrial Management
College. In December, the buildings of the
preparatory course and the Business College, the
Kanematsu Auditorium and part of the Kunitachi
Campus were annexed by the Japanese Army and a
munitions company during the War.

Cooperation

Became a national school under the direct
supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and
Commerce and was renamed the Tokyo Commercial
School.
Placed under the direct supervision of the Ministry of
Education.
Absorbed the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages,
moved to Hitotsubashi, Kanda, and was renamed
the Tokyo Commercial School. The Tokyo School of
Foreign Languages was abolished in February 1886.
Opened the Institute for Training Apprentices in
Commerce and Industry, thereafter affiliated to the
Tokyo Commercial School.
The Ministry of Education acquired jurisdiction of the
Institute for Training in Banking from the Ministry of
Finance, and affiliated it to the Tokyo Commercial
School as a Special Course in Banking.
The Special Course in Banking was renamed Special
Course in Accounting.
The Higher Commercial School was renamed the
Tokyo Higher Commercial School, and the Institute
for Training Teachers of Commerce was affiliated to
it.
An order from the Ministry of Education to abolish
the specialized course led to the outbreak of the socalled Shin-yu Incident.
Professor Zensaku Sano was appointed Principal,
the first graduate of the School to be so. His office
as Principal and President lasted until 1935.
Research Collaboration

Arinori Mori privately founded the Commercial
Training School in Owari-cho, Ginza, Tokyo. On
September 24 he notified the Mayor of Tokyo of the
establishment of the School at the Tokyo Council,
and this date came to mark the founding of the
School.
Placed under the administration of the Tokyo
Chamber.
Moved to Kobiki-cho and became a prefectural
school of Tokyo. Jiro Yano was appointed head of
the school.

Law and Sociology. Under the new system at
Hitotsubashi University, the first 2 years of study
became known as the “first term.”
Celebrated the University’s 75th anniversary.
The Faculty of Law and Sociology was divided into 2
separate faculties: the Faculty of Law and the Faculty
of Social Sciences. The University has had 4 faculties
ever since.
Set up 4 graduate schools: Commerce and
Management, Economics, Law, and Social Sciences.
Master’s and Doctoral programs were offered.
The Division of Industrial Management Research was
separated from the Institute of Economic Research
and affiliated to the Faculty of Commerce and
Management.
Under instructions from the Ministry of Education,
the Kodaira Campus and the University Library
there were placed under government control.
Following a revision to the law regulating the
foundation of national universities, the Information
and Documentation Center for Japanese Economic
Statistics was created as a research institute affiliated
to the University’s Institute of Economic Research.
Celebrated the University’s 90th anniversary.
Established the Health and Care Center.
The Faculty of Commerce and Management
was subdivided into the Department of Business
Management and the Department of Commerce.
Celebrated the University’s 100th anniversary.
The Center for Historical Social Science Literature
was established.
Established the Computer Center.
Celebrated the University’s 110th anniversary.
Reorganized the Documentation Center for
Japanese Economic Statistics affiliated to the
Institute of Economic Research as the Information
and Documentation Center for Japanese Economic
Statistics.
Celebrated the University’s 120th anniversary.
Established the Graduate School of Language and
Society, offering Master’s and Doctoral programs.
Established the Center for Student Exchange as
a common education research institution for the
University.
The Kodaira Campus was abolished.
The University Library at Kodaira was abolished.
The Global Issues Area was added to the Graduate
School of Social Sciences as an independent area.
Reorganized the Division of Industrial Management
Research as the Institute of Innovation Research.
The University decided to place more emphasis
on graduate schools, and the Graduate School of
Economics was the first to be reorganized, with the
fundamental and applied economics curricula of the
undergraduate program being integrated into it.
Established the Graduate School of International
Corporate Strategy offering Master’s and Doctoral
programs. Admissions to the Master’s program
began in 2000 and to the Doctoral program in 2002.
The Graduate School of Law was reorganized,
with the first, second and third curricula of the
undergraduate program being integrated into it.
The Graduate School of Commerce and
Management and the Graduate School of Social
