We continue to grow with health and wellness facilities in Cobourg and Brighton, 13 licensed Child Care Centres, 7 seasonal sites, 6 Ontario Early Years Centres and our international partnership with YMCA Nicaragua. Each of these program centres are committed to providing a welcoming community for everyone. Believing that health is something that happens between us, in the context of community, we continue to strengthen the foundations of our organization with the goal of delivering lasting social and personal change to our fellow residents. In support of this goal, the Board of Directors of YMCA Northumberland and the YMCA of Greater Toronto voted unanimously in December 2015 to renew the existing management agreement for another year, giving each Association the opportunity to continue to explore the implications of integration. In May 2015, the Project Coordinating Committee began to explore partnership opportunities with the Town of Cobourg regarding the building of a new facility. Our Child Care Department expanded to include three new sites: Plainville, Spring Valley and Camborne, which increases our Child Care operations to 13 sites, currently serving over 650 families. At our YMCA Camp Tiki, we launched the “Rise and Shine Breakfast” and the “Let’s Do Lunch” programs to ensure every camper had access to healthy meals every day. We also introduced the YMCA’s Value Bead Program to support pro-social behaviour between campers. In this past year, our Strong Kids Campaign exceeded its goal and raised $198,236, through the generous contributions from our donors and corporate partners. These funds provide financial assistance to community members who wish to access our programs but are unable to afford fees. $22,000 was raised through Operation Red Nose – providing over 220 safe rides to residents during the holiday season. We will continue to explore paths to strengthen YMCA Northumberland and provide more growth and opportunities for our community. With your support, we are nurturing positive change in the lives of many of our community members. Thank you for continuing to inspire us to find ways to serve more people in our community. We look forward to another successful year! 2015 Board of Directors Leadership Team Antony Pitts Board Chair Medhat Mahdy President and CEO YMCA of Greater Toronto and YMCA Northumberland Boris Nikolovsky Vice Chair Les Andrews Director John Schmitt Vice President, YMCA of Greater Toronto Elaine Azzopardi Director Eunice Kirkpatrick Executive Director Dr. Michael Barrie Director Mike Bunn Director, Business Development and Finance Mark Geens Director Debbie Brown Manager, Child Care Dr. Ron Kerr Director Lynne Caffin Manager, Administration, Human Resources and OEYC Al LeBlanc Director William Lee Director William MacDonald Director Medhat Mahdy Antony Pitts President and CEO YMCA of Greater Toronto and YMCA Northumberland Board Chair YMCA Northumberland Anne Gear Manager, Brighton YMCA Samantha McCracken Manager, Membership and Programs Bayley Mitchell Director In memoriam Happy Mireault Manager, Funds Development and Global Initiatives Dr. Beth Selby Director Leslie Murray General Manager, Cobourg YMCA Elizabeth Vosburgh Director Keith Publicover Manager, Assets Theresa Rickerby Cobourg Town Council Rep Tim Strong Manager, Information Technology Marina Turner-Johansson Manager, Community Outreach 2015 Annual Report • YMCA Northumberland THE POWER OF COMMUNITY HOW ABEER AND HER FAMILY FOUND HOME 07 A beer Al-Salihi and her family arrived in Canada with limited income and very few friends and family, but it didn’t take them long to become a part of the YMCA Northumberland family. After living in Syria all her life, Abeer married her husband and then they moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where she took a job as a civil engineer assistant. Not long after moving, Abeer had her first child, Abdulla. Unhappy with her work, she decided to pursue her passion for teaching and children by starting a new career path at ABC’s Nursery in Sharjah, UAE. After two years at the nursery, Abeer received a job teaching kindergarten at a private school in Dubai, UAE, and one year later, she had her daughter, Sama. She absolutely loved her career and her coworkers, but after seven years of teaching children, learning new things and improving her English, Abeer decided it was time to start a new adventure in Canada. In 2014, Abeer and her family moved to Cobourg with the hopes that the small town atmosphere would give her an opportunity to understand, appreciate and connect with Canadian culture and habits. Although she researched many Arabic communities in Mississauga and Scarborough, Abeer knew in her heart she wanted to come to Canada to be Canadian, and Cobourg could give her and her family that experience. Since I arrived, the YMCA considered me part of their family. The staff care about my kids, respect my religion and everyone is always happy. I just love being a part of the YMCA. Upon arrival, Abeer approached YMCA Northumberland to inquire about how her family may be eligible for a membership with limited income. Through the YMCA Strong Kids Opportunity Fund, in partnership with funds raised through the Northumberland United Way annual campaign, Abeer and her family were granted a fully sponsored family membership so they could enjoy programs and services at the Cobourg YMCA. At 11 years old, Abdulla immediately joined the Y Waves swim team, a youth leadership program and wrestling, while 7 year old, Sama joined swim lessons and gymnastics. “Having a membership allowed my kids to play sports, meet new friends and take part in fun and new activities,” says Abeer. “They have gained so much confidence and enjoy all the programs they are involved with. To my kids, the Cobourg YMCA is their second home.” While Abdulla and Sama explored a variety of youth programs, Abeer became a familiar face at the Cobourg YMCA, especially to Coordinator of Membership Services, Nancy Little and to whom Abeer enjoyed sharing her stories from her experience teaching in the UAE. Realizing her potential, Nancy encouraged Abeer to continue her passion in Cobourg by volunteering in the Cobourg YMCA Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC). Excited about the opportunity, Abeer applied for a position and began volunteering in September 2015. “We want to welcome people to our community and make them feel at home at our YMCA,” says Nancy. “Through conversations with Abeer, I could tell she had a passion for children and she really missed her career. I am so pleased we are able to give families, like Abeer’s, the opportunity to enjoy the YMCA and its programs, while they get to know the community.” The Cobourg YMCA staff were impressed by Abeer’s experience and abilities, so they suggested she apply for the new employment opportunity that had been recently posted with YMCA Child Care. Within a couple weeks, Abeer was hired as a Child Care Assistant for the after-school Child Care at C.R. Gummow Public School in Cobourg, with plans to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education. After arriving in Cobourg with limited resources and no social connections, Abeer’s children now participate in fun and healthy activities, meeting new friends and building confidence, while Abeer enjoys her new job and continues her volunteering at the Cobourg OEYC. Although, Abdulla is only 11 years old, he is already looking forward to becoming a YMCA volunteer and eventually training to become a certified lifeguard. “Since I arrived, the YMCA considered me part of their family. The staff care about my kids, respect my religion and everyone is always happy,” says Abeer. “I just love being a part of the YMCA.” -Abeer Al-Salihi 2015 Annual Report • YMCA Northumberland 09 IMPACT STORIES GABE’S IMPACT As a very proud volunteer, Gabe Walters has certainly made an impact on the staff and members at the Cobourg YMCA over the last 12 years. Gabe has lived within Northumberland County all his life. He has been involved with Community Living West Northumberland for the past 26 years, which has given him many opportunities to enjoy fun activities, engage in healthy living, meet new friends and volunteer at the Cobourg YMCA. Gabe began volunteering at the Cobourg YMCA in 2004 and every Thursday morning he assists with administrative duties, greets members and participants, gives compliments and welcomes everyone to the facility with a warm smile. “I think Gabe's biggest impact is that he greets every member passing by with a handshake or a hug,” says Leslie Murray, General Manager of the Cobourg YMCA. “It doesn't matter who they are, or if he knows them, he just enjoys spreading good will and cheer.” Gabe loves spending time with his family and friends and always looks forward to social outings and shopping trips with Community Living. He also enjoys martial arts, playing baseball, watching wrestling, working out and swimming at the YMCA. Gabe is very active in the community and has become a familiar face for many at the Cobourg YMCA. “Gabe’s presence in the lobby is very welcoming,” says Tracey Dafoe, Coordinator of Volunteers. “He definitely lights up a room with his loveable nature and people always smile after he greets them.” Gabe always has a way of making everyone’s day a little brighter. He truly embodies the values of the YMCA and proves a warm hug, a big smile and kind words can go a long way. HAYDEN’S SECOND CHANCE It has never been easy for Hayden. His childhood lacked the guidance and support children require in their early years. At 11 years old, Hayden began living full-time with his great-grandparents, Sheila and Garfield, who had recently gained full custody of him. He was enrolled in a new school and was encouraged to join extra-curricular activities to meet new friends and enjoy physical activity. Growing up, Hayden was never given the opportunity to play sports and join programs and activities. However, Hayden had always enjoyed swimming, so joining the Gators Swim Team at the YMCA Campbellford outdoor swimming pool seemed like a good fit. The swim team gave him the opportunity to meet new friends and enhance his swim skills during the summer months. Sheila remembers many days where Hayden would be at the pool all afternoon, come home for dinner and then return for a last swim of the day. Keeping Hayden active and involved in as many sports and activities as possible is a top priority for Sheila and Garfield, but it has also proven to be quite a financial challenge for the senior couple. Fortunately, there are many resources in the community to provide support for their family, including the YMCA Strong Kids Opportunity Fund. The more Hayden swam, the more costly it became to purchase a day pass every time Hayden wanted to go for a swim. After learning more about the Strong Kids Campaign, Sheila applied for financial assistance with the hopes they may be eligible for financial subsidy. Sheila’s application was approved and not only did Hayden receive a summer membership for the swimming pool, but the annual swim team fee was also covered. Hayden will soon be 13 years old, and he continues to enjoy many other activities in the community including hockey, baseball, basketball, track and field and snowboarding. Thanks to the support from the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, other local community organizations and his great-grandparents, Hayden can look forward to a healthy future filled with love, support and play. JEFF SEYMOUR Four years ago, Jeff realized he wasn’t happy with the way he looked or felt. He wanted to improve his physical fitness and overall health, so he decided to join the Brighton YMCA. Living with OCD, ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome, keeping physically active is really important for Jeff and helps him to release energy and stay focused. He has developed many long-lasting friendships with staff and other members and enjoys going to the YMCA everyday knowing he will be surrounded by people who will motivate him to do his best. Joining the Brighton YMCA helped Jeff find the confidence he was lacking in order to live a happy, healthy life. He enjoys being involved in the community, sharing advice and impacting the lives of others, so giving back to the YMCA community was an easy decision. “Jeff is an active participant in group fitness classes, workouts with friends and is always a willing participant to help with our fundraising activities or promotion,” says Anne Gear, Manager at the Brighton YMCA. “Through Jeff’s actions, he has shown the impact the Y has had on him and will vocalise his appreciation of the Brighton Y within his community.” Jeff is a true supporter of the YMCA and often volunteers whenever he can. Whether it’s fixing equipment, helping new members or creating new music playlists, Jeff is always willing to help. The Brighton YMCA is a small community of familiar faces, new friends and welcoming staff and members, who are dedicated to motivating others to achieve their personal best. Jeff is currently training with other members for the Spartan 5K and 10K race this summer at Brimacombe, after completing the 5K race last year. “If you want to improve your health and fitness, my one piece of advice is don’t ever give up,” says Jeff. “If there is a point when you look at yourself and you are still not happy with the way you look and feel, you have to just keep going. In the end, it will be worth it.” 2015 Annual Report • YMCA Northumberland 11 A fter a courageous battle with cancer, Happy Mireault, a longtime YMCA employee, friend and community ambassador passed away March 11, 2016. This story is dedicated in memory of Happy and the positive impact that she made in people’s lives. Happy was a dedicated employee of YMCA Northumberland and impacted the lives of many people around her. Her circle expanded well beyond the borders of Cobourg and Northumberland County. She began working in Funds Development in 1997 during the Cobourg YMCA’s capital campaign, but over the course of her career, she embraced many other positions including marketing, communications, our annual Strong Kids Campaign, development and international. In 2000, when we partnered with YMCA Nicaragua, in collaboration with YMCA Canada and the Montreal YMCA, to provide support for youth development programs, Happy began fostering relationships locally, nationally and internationally to ensure all programs were successful. In 2002, Happy helped develop a local group called Women Para Mujeres “Women for Women” which consisted of staff, volunteers, International Committee members and mothers of youth exchange participants who wanted to continue to engage in and support women’s projects in Nicaragua. She was the driving force behind the success of many of our Y events: Golf Tournament, Youth Exchange, Speaker Series and of course Peace Week / Peace Medal celebrations. Happy volunteered with other organizations in our community as well including, Horizons of Friendships and Trinity United Church to build stronger relationships and work together on international projects. Without a doubt, Happy’s creativity, selflessness and unique flavour for art and culture made her a valuable member of the YMCA team, enabling her to travel and enjoy many different aspects of the YMCA. Happy’s passion for community engagement inspired others to get involved and create positive change. She had an incredible ability to make everyone around her feel welcome, comfortable and eager to participate. Through active programs and exchanges, Happy created meaningful, lasting relationships that continue to benefit youth in our community and abroad. Throughout her career and volunteer work, Happy proved a little hope, kindness and passion can greatly impact the lives of those around us with positive results. Whether it was our local, national or global community, Happy always had a wonderful smile and a way of sharing her true passion and dedication for building healthy, strong communities. Happy inspired others to achieve their best and strive for a better, brighter future and the impact on all she touched is immeasurable. 13 2015 Volunteers Healthy communities have amazing volunteers
