October is here and it is time to start planning. Please remember Conference Week is October 17-21. We will be on a minimum day schedule with a release time of 1:17 PM. First period will begin at 8:43 everyday that week including Wednesday. Zero period will still begin at 7:45 AM. New Homework Policy In September 2016, the San Carlos School Board adopted a new homework policy. You can find the new policy here: http://www.scsdk8.org/scsd-homework-policy/ In middle school, daily reading, either informational text or literature, as well as some writing practice are the main expectation. In math you should continue to see daily homework/practice at least four days a week. Pease expect additional homework for students taking compacted math courses. The policy calls for homework that is personalized in one or more of the following ways: Skills/concept practice: Additional time and/or resources that vary according to each child’s “in the moment” learning needs in order to support mastery of academic content, as determined by teacher observations of student progress Student-driven: Opportunities to help students discover new interests, dive into passions, and extend their thinking Project-based: Activities designed to deepen students’ exploration of “need to know” driving questions in science and social studies As our students grow and change over the course of the school year, you will notice that homework will vary in the ways noted above. This month, we’re focused on launching optional homework menus as a tool to encourage student-driven learning. CARLMONT’S SHADOWING PROGRAM *NEW Carlmont’s Shadowing Program offers two options for 8th grade students: Individual (one on one) or Group Shadowing. Whether you’re certain to be attending Carlmont or are visiting multiple schools before making your final decision, we have an option that will meet your needs. Individual (one on one) Shadowing: November 2016- February 2017 Individual shadowing is designed for the 8th grade students who are deciding which high school to attend in the fall and who feel that spending time in the classroom during instruction would be beneficial in deciding which high school best meets their needs. Shadowing visits will be held from November through February. Students will be scheduled on a first come/first served basis. The objective is for incoming students to experience a day in the life of a high school freshman, by attending classes with a current student. They should not expect to attend the exact courses they might take when enrolled. 8th grade students will benefit the most by making their visit interactive, that is, by talking with the freshman about their specific concerns and questions. Group Shadowing: November 9, 2016 or February 1, 2017 1:15 to 3:00 p.m. (attend one) The group shadowing program is designed for students who are planning to attend Carlmont and want a broader overview of the school. It allows the student to experience a day on campus in a large group setting. The program is offered on two dates. Registration is on a first come/first served basis. Students are encouraged to attend with friends i they desire to do so, however, we do not pre-arrange groups. Friends can meet up with each other at the event. Group Shadowing begins with 100+ students in the Student Union and ends with a small, 15-20 person, tour group led by 2-3 Carlmont students who will answer questions and provide information. The day is structured to give your student an overview of the school including a slideshow, performances by select Carlmont student groups and a brief visit to classrooms where they can interact with one or more of our exceptional teachers. Registration for both Shadowing programs opens October 13, 2016 at: http://www.carlmonths.org/Parents/8th-Grade-Transition/index.html.
