British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association
Why use a BVRLA member?
Whether you are hiring a car, leasing a fleet of tractor units or renting a van for
the weekend, the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association – the BVRLA
– works hard to ensure that you can use your vehicle with confidence.
Our 500+ members own and operate a fleet of around
2.75 million cars, vans and trucks, providing safe,
sustainable and affordable access to road transport
by the hour, day, week, month or year.
There are many benefits to booking with a BVRLA member
– this is why you should always look for the logo!
High Standards of Service
All BVRLA members must adhere to our mandatory Code of Conduct, which ensures
that you benefit from the highest standards of service, fair terms and conditions,
transparent and accurate information, and a complaint resolution service.
The code requires members to provide safe and roadworthy vehicles, use accurate
advertising and provide clear information about their products and services.
Members that don’t adhere to it can be expelled from the association.
Quality Assurance
The BVRLA runs quality assurance programmes that inspect members’ vehicles
on a random basis, whether short-term rental cars and vans or commercial vehicles
over 3.5 tonnes.
Our Ready to Rent programme involves an internal and external inspection of cars
and vans to a 44-item checklist, including lights, oil and brake fluid levels, tyre
pressure and service records.
Our Commercial Vehicle Quality Assurance Scheme (CVQA) is even more thorough,
with premises, staff, signage, and maintenance and safety records all checked,
and vehicles examined to O-Licence requirements. Members must show that they
have the right systems and equipment in place to maintain commercial vehicles in a
roadworthy condition. They must keep maintenance records for each vehicle for a
minimum of 15 months and demonstrate a robust system of safety inspections.

This means that any operator renting or leasing a commercial vehicle from
one of our members will automatically meet the VOSA O-licence requirement
to undertake independent audits of any third-party vehicle supplier.
Expertise
The BVRLA provides an array of advice and guidance to help ensure that you are
well informed when it comes to choosing and using our members’ vehicles and
services. These include our guides to Renting, Driving at Work, Driving a Minibus
– and our industry standard fair wear and tear guides for drivers and operators of
cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles.
Campaigning
Renting or leasing from a BVRLA member means that you are working with a
company that has chosen to be part of a vibrant, collaborative trade body that
campaigns on behalf of the industry and its customers.
Together with our members, the BVRLA spends a lot of time debating key road
transport issues and consulting with policymakers in Whitehall and Brussels.
Some of the issues we have campaigned on include: lower fuel duty; greater
incentives for low-emission vehicles; improved access to independent maintenance
and vehicle testing facilities; and a cost-neutral, enforceable lorry road user charge.
Complaint Resolution
Renting or leasing with a BVRLA member means that you can come to us if you
have a complaint or are unable to resolve a dispute. Our conciliation process is
quick and free, potentially saving you money, time and hassle. Our members must
abide by its findings, but you remain free to seek redress elsewhere. Complaint
resolution is a mandatory requirement in many tenders, particularly public sector
framework agreements.
Sustainable Transport
Our members run some of the safest, cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicles
on the road, which means they have lower running costs and are London Low
Emission Zone (LEZ) compliant. The BVRLA continues to lobby the government
and manufacturers to ensure that ultra-low-carbon vehicles are practical,
affordable and are accompanied by the right long-term incentives
to encourage wider take-up.
