UMBRIA ART & WINE SPOLETO / PERUGIA / GUBBIO (6 nights) Few people know the beauty of art and landscape of Umbria. In effect it has nothing to envy to Tuscany. Well known as the lung of Italy it offers an incredible variety of choices. Thanks to the high quality of its wine, this package will give you an intense experience of taste and emotions. In this sense a range of interests mix together, from the artistic side, through the religious one, ending with the beauty of landscapes and of traditional manufactured products, as the ceramics of Deruta. MINIMUM 2 PAX Suggested itinerary with indipendent visits, no guided tours: DAY 01 – SPOLETO Spoleto is in the south-east of Umbria. Thanks to its history it has a big range of attractions for its visitors: the famous Ponte delle Torri, an ancient aqueduct of the XIII century, the marvellous Caio Melisso Theatre (many musical events of Spoleto Festival take place in this theatre), the Rocca Albornoziana with its frescos of the XVI century and a lot of Roman ruins as the Arco di Druso. Not less important, the Teatro Romano and the Ponte Sanguinario, close to Via Flaminia, one of the most ancient street in Italy built by the Romans. After visit back to hotel in Spoleto city centre and overnight. DAY 02 – SPOLETO / MONTEFALCO / BEVAGNA / PERUGIA (75 Km) Breakfast in hotel. During this day, you will drive along the famous area of “Sagrantine” Wine, one of the best known throughout centre Italy. After 25 Km our first stop is in Montefalco. Called the “Queen of Sagrantine vineyard”, the village, famous not only for wine and oil (but also for very important textile market) may offer a lovely promenade in its medieval streets. Along the walks, a suggested stop is in the “San Francis Church” (it was a Church but, after its deconsecration is now a museums) with paintings by Benozzo Gozzoli and by Perugino. In the very central Piazza del Comune, we are pleased to offer a wine tasting at Enoteca FEDERICO II, one of the historical Wine Bar throughout Umbria. After the visit in Montefalco, you will proceed toward another masterpiece of Umbria: Bevagna. Officially recognized as the “Wine & Oil city”, Bevagna is one of the best villages in Umbria. Surrounded by its medieval walls, it keeps the enchanting of Roman atmosphere, while the local handicrafts shops will help you to imagine how was the lifestyle in this wonderful village. During the visit why not enjoying and … drinking wine ???? Go to the Enoteca ONOFRI to taste the unforgettable Umbrian wine and “breathe” the magic of this day (this second wine tasting is not included in tour price). After visit in Bevagna, proceed to Perugia and arrival at hotel. Accommodation and overnight. DAY 03 – PERUGIA Perugia is a notable artistic place in the centre of Umbria. The town gave his nickname to the famous painter Pietro Vannucci, called Perugino, who decorated with a beautiful series of frescoes the local Sala del Cambio; eight of his pictures can also be admired in the National Gallery of Umbria. The artistic centre of the city is Piazza IV Novembre, where, between ancient buildings, rises the Fontana Maggiore decorated with the carvings of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano and the Cathedral. From Piazza Dante you can reach the Arco Etrusco, the main door of the city of III-II century b.C. From Piazza IV Novembre you get to Via dei Priori that leads to a characteristic medieval quarter and to the main street. Perugia has become famous for chocolate, mostly because of a single firm, Perugina, whose Baci (kisses) are widely exported. Perugia chocolate is very popular in Italy, and the city hosts a chocolate festival every year in October. After visit back to hotel and overnight. DAY 04 – PERUGIA / DERUTA / TORGIANO / PERUGIA (77 Km) After breakfast in hotel, departure to the south enjoy this exciting day mixing the wonderful ceramic art and the real wine history. After just 20 Km driving, the first stop is in Deruta. The visit of the historic town centre, featuring the Gothic Church of San Francesco - built in 1388 – is not complete without a stop at the municipal hall, the Palazzetto Municipale, which dates from about 1300, located on the Piazza dei Consoli (the "Square of the Consuls"). But Deruta is famous throughout the world for its magnificent ceramic art. To know everything about this particular art, you can not miss a visit at the Museum of Ceramics (with its 6000 ceramics masterpieces) or just walking in all village streets admiring the ceramic shops everywhere. Not less important to see, the Art Gallery (the Pinacoteca), holdings a fresco by Perugino. After this lovely stop, we will then arrive in Torgiano. We are really now in the Wine Temple in Umbria. Thinking at Torgiano means thinking at wine. The city coat is represented by few bunches of grapes and all around this very small village wine history. Do not miss a stop at the Torgiano Wine Museums (one of the best and most complete wine museums in the world) and the Oil Museums inside the medieval buildings of the city. Close to the Wine Museums, we are pleased to offer wine tasting at Enoteca “LUNGAROTTI”. After visit in Torgiano, back to hotel in Perugia. Overnight. UMBRIA ART & WINE DAY 05 – PERUGIA / ASSISI / GUBBIO (78 Km) After breakfast in hotel, departure from Perugia toward Assisi. City of San Francesco d'Assisi it is one of the most famous international destinations for tourism. It is situated in the centre of the Regional Park of Monte Subasio, place of great spirituality. The main entrance is the Porta di San Francesco. The Basilica of the Saint is one of the most important sanctuary of the Christian world, where it's possible to see paintings of Puccio Campana, Giotto, and his school, Lorenzetti, Martini and the followers of Cimabue. In Piazza del Comune, heart of the city, are located the Palazzo Priori, the Torre del Popolo and the Tempio della Minerva. A visit at the Museo Civico, the Church of San Pietro and the Rocca Maggiore (in front of the Duomo and reachable by the characteristic S. Maria delle Rose) is a nice suggestion to complete the tour. After the visit, proceed to Gubbio. Arrival, accommodation in hotel and overnight. DAY 06 – GUBBIO Breakfast in hotel, and then full day visit of Gubbio. It is one of the most ancient towns of Umbria, extremely well preserved during centuries and rich of monuments testifying its glorious past. Two Important witnesses of the pare are the Tavole Eugubine, one of most important documents referring to the ancient people called Italici, and the Roman Theatre just outside de walls of the town. Dominated from the top by the Basilica on which the rests of St. Ubaldo are buried, Gubbio keeps architect masterpieces testifying the beauty and the importance of what used to be during the Middle ages, a real town-state. At the beginning of the XIV century, the Consuls Palace, today symbol of the town, was constructed together with the square Piazza Pensile and Pretorio Palace. Not less important, the Dukes Palace testifying the importance of the period on which the Montefeltro's family had the administration of the town. Very interesting are also the Cathedral (XII century), St. Maria Nuova (with inside the Madonna del Belvedere painted by Ottaviano Nelli on 1413), Church and Convent of St. Agostino (XIII century) with frescoes of Nelli, and Church St. Giovanni (XII century) characterised by the facade and bell tower in Romanesque style. Among the most important manifestations taking place in the city, we should absolutely mention the Racing silk of the Crossbow and the Ceri Race.
