Summer Reading List 2017 – Rising 7th Grade
Students will choose any two of the following books to read:
1. Life as We Knew It (Susan Beth Pfeffer)
2. Out of My Mind (Sharon Draper)
3. Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry (Mildred D. Taylor)
4. Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card)
Independent Summer Reading Assignments
For each book, choose one of the projects below. You MAY NOT choose the same project for
both books.
1. An Author Study: Research the author’s life. Then, explore how the author’s life or
experience relates to the book in terms of setting, characters, and plot. Write a 2
page, double-spaced paper to share your discoveries and insights.
2. Theme: Choose one possible theme for the book. Defend your theme by citing
specific examples from the book. Write a 2 page, double-spaced paper.
3. Artist’s Rendering: Choose a setting or character to represent in any medium
(Examples: chalk, water-color, paint, clay). Be sure your work is sufficiently
detailed. Write a 8+ sentence paragraph describing your work, including why you
chose the medium you did.
NOTE: Be sure to follow the rubric attached for both assignment choices. All work is due
the first day of school. Attach the rubric to each project.
Books for Classroom use:
Books to be purchased during the school year: students will need to have their own
copies of these books. (These are not summer reading books.)
