History of Navarro College
Navarro College was founded in 1946 by a group of local citizens committed
to furthering the educational opportunities of the local community. The
first students began classes in September, 1946, on the site of the former Air
Activities of Texas Flight School located six miles south of Corsicana.
In 1951, the campus was moved to its present location, which currently
includes 117 acres, 13 academic buildings and 23 student housing units.
In an attempt to address the growing needs of its service area, which consists
of Navarro, Ellis, Freestone, Limestone, and Leon counties, the college began
offering courses in various locations within those areas and eventually
established three permanent centers, Navarro College South at Mexia,
located in Limestone County, the Waxahachie Campus at Waxahachie, and
the Midlothian Campus at Midlothian, both located in Ellis County.
Navarro College has had five presidents: Mr. Ray Waller, Dr. Ben Jones, Dr.
Kenneth Walker, Dr. Gerald Burson, and presently, Dr. Richard M. Sanchez.
NOTE: Due to the large attendance at commencement, three ceremonies
have been planned. At the 10 a.m. ceremony in Corsicana, students who
have earned an Associate in Arts, Associate in Arts Teaching or Associate in
Science Degree will participate in commencement. At the 1 p.m. ceremony,
students earning the Associate in Applied Science Degree and Certificate of
Completion will be recognized. A third ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in Waxahachie
will recognize graduates from Ellis County.
The Navarro College Board of Trustees, administration and staff desire that all
attendees at commencement have ample and comfortable seating. Overflow
seating will be available at the Corsicana graduations in Dawson Auditorium,
and graduation will be viewed through a closed-circuit broadcast.

Daniele Nash
Daniele Nash is from San Antonio, Texas, and enrolled at Navarro College in the Fall
of 2011 after being recruited to play on the softball team. She is graduating with an
Associate in Science Degree in General Studies, and will transfer after graduation
to St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, where she will continue her educational
and athletic career. She plans to major in International Business with a minor in
Mandarin Chinese. Daniele states that Navarro College has prepared her well over
the past two years, and she feels blessed to have been a part of the College. When
asked about Daniele, her Speech instructor commented, “Daniele’s enthusiastic,
upbeat attitude was infectious in the classroom. She was a joy to have in class.”
Ginesha Pickersgill
Ginesha Pickersgill came to Navarro College from Kingston, Jamaica, on a soccer
scholarship. She works in Gibson Hall as a student worker in addition to playing
soccer and taking classes. She loves her family and her coaches. After she graduates
from Navarro, Ginesha will be transferring to Memphis University in Memphis,
Tennessee, where she will continue to play soccer on a scholarship. She is a General
Studies major with plans to major in Business Administration and Management at
Memphis. Her friends and teammates say that she is fun to be around. Ginesha is
very genuine, helpful, and thoughtful about others. Ginesha’s Math instructor stated,
“Ginesha is hardworking, cooperative, and an overall good student. I have observed
her character an achievements that indicate diligence, honesty, and determination.”
Jessica Delaney
Jessica Delaney is a military veteran and single parent. A two-time combat veteran,
she served in Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan 2005, and Operation Iraqi
Freedom, Iraq 2006-2007. After completing her military contract, she came home
to Texas with her son and selected Navarro College to continue her educational
career. While at NC, Jessica has worked in the Veterans Services office under Mrs.
Kay Schipper, helping her fellow veterans and their dependents obtain the correct
benefits they deserve. She has also been the Secretary of the Navarro College Veterans
Organization. Jessica has also been a very successful student, as evidenced by the
following quote from one of her professors: “Jessica was a very active member of
my classroom always asking questions and diligently completing all assignments in
a timely manner. Jessica’s love for learning is very apparent and is quite infectious
among her fellow classmates who would frequent the night-time telescope observing
sessions outside of classroom hours. Jessica’s academic integrity, joy of learning,
active involvement on campus, and pleasant personality make her a model Navarro
College student.”

Charlotte Wills
Charlotte Wills attended school in Mildred. She continues to live in her childhood
home in Mildred. She has been married to her husband for twenty (20) years and has
one son Aaron, who is four (4) years old. Additionally she helped raise her two grown
step-sons, Tyson and David. Charlotte began college after giving birth to her son. At
that time she realized she wanted to set a better example for him. She previously
worked in service oriented jobs in food service and a local cleaning business. She
desired to prove to her son that no goal is too high as long as you set your mind to
accomplish your dreams and goals. She has had wonderful support from her husband
and mother, by allowing her the time to study in the rigorous nursing program,
and support from her father and friends. Charlotte would like to work at Navarro
Regional Hospital and serve the community while gaining nursing experience. She
has already prepared to bridge her degree to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
and eventually plans on pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Once she
completes her MSN she would like to become an instructor at Navarro College.
Brandon Evans
Brandon Evans was born and raised in Corsicana, Texas. He will graduate with an
Associates of Applied Science Degree in Welding Technology. He plans to attend the
University of North Texas and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
As a child his passion was playing the piano. At Corsicana High School he became
very active in FFA, showing livestock and participated in Ag Mechanics where he
fabricated an award winning 28’ hay trailer. This is where his interest in Welding
began. His parents are Harold and Ada Evans of Corsicana. Brandon was greatly
influenced to enroll in the Navarro College Welding Technology Program by Dr.
Kenneth Martin, President of the Ellis County Campuses, Navarro College. Evans
credits the Navarro College Trio staff with aiding in his success at Navarro.
Miguel Sandoval
Miguel Sandoval is graduating with a degree in AAS Petroleum Technology. He has
completed an internship with XTO Energy applying the skills he has learned. Born
in El Salvador, he moved to Texas in 1986 with wife, Rhina, and infant son, Gabriel.
Their youngest son, David, was born in 1989. The Sandoval family came to the United
States fleeing the civil war that ravaged El Salvador in the 1980’s. With the help of
family already living in Corsicana, as well as many generous friends, the Sandovals
found a safe place to raise a family. Miguel’s sons are graduates of Corsicana High
School and Texas State University. After working in a mobile home factory, Miguel
transitioned to television repair, working in this field for over 20 years. A small
business owner since 1998, Miguel participates in service organizations including the
local chapter of LULAC.

Matthew Graham
Matthew Graham is the son of David and Vicky Graham and is a 2003 graduate
of Corsicana High School. Matthew studied Medical Lab Technology at Navarro
College upon high school graduation. After working five years at Ennis Regional
Hospital, Matthew desired to transfer to a more patient care oriented field. He
enrolled in Navarro College’s Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) program in
2012. Following EMT graduation, he enrolled in Navarro’s Paramedic program.
Upon graduation from the Paramedic program, he will marry his sweetheart, Cindy
Beasley, and work as a Paramedic. He also plans to continue his studies and become
a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). In his spare time Matthew enjoys
playing with his nephews and nieces.
Christopher O’Teter
Christopher O’Teter was raised in Midlothian, Texas. He was homeschooled by his
parents, Patrick and Diana O’Teter, and graduated in 2010. Christopher is very active
in martial arts and community service. He began his studies at Navarro in the fall
semester of 2011 in Business and Administration. Christopher has been very active
in student activities. He is serving as president of the Navarro College Republican
Club, located on the Midlothian campus, and he also assisted in the formation of the
Business Club. His goal is to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration
at Dallas Baptist University with aspirations to open his own business and continue
his education to acquire a law degree.
Angela Juarez
Angela Juarez graduated from Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie, Texas.
Ms. Juarez married her high school sweetheart, Geraldo, in 2004 and they had two
children, Julia and Jordan. Geraldo passed away in 2009 due to a fatal car accident.
Angela had always had a desire to complete her college degree and in 2010 she
decided to begin her studies at Navarro College. While at Navarro College, Angela
has worked part time in the bookstore for almost two years. Having now earned an
Associates in Science Degree, Angela plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science inNursing.
The Graduate Caston Scholarship
The Graduate Caston Scholarship is a prestigious award made possible
by a grant from M.C. and Mattie Caston. Administered through the
Navarro County Educational Foundation Inc., these awards provide
financial assistance to select Navarro College graduates who desire to
pursue a baccalaureate degree. The scholarship may be used at any
accredited college or university, public or private. To be eligible for the
Graduate Caston Scholarship, a student must meet established criteria
and maintain a minimum overall grade-point average of 3.7. This
scholarship is for two years in the amount of $7,400 per year, or a total
of $14,800 for two years.

Significance of the Colors of the Academic Regalia Worn by the
Faculty and Administration of Navarro College
The color of the velvet edging of the hood indicates the degree, and the color of the
lining indicates the college colors of the institution that conferred the degree.
The hood for the Master of Arts displays a white velvet edging; the Master of Science,
a gold edging; the Doctor of Divinity and Doctor of Theology, a scarlet fringe; the
Doctor of Laws, purple; the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Psychology, blue; the
Doctor of Literature, white; and the Doctor of Education and Specialist in Education,
light blue.
Significance of the Medals Worn by the
Faculty of Navarro College
Faculty members wearing pewter medallions have been presented with the National
Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) teaching excellence
award. Faculty members are nominated for this honor by their peers based on their
dedication to the teaching profession.
Significance of the Navarro College Seal
The Navarro College seal is the official symbol of
the institution. It is round to represent the perpetual
search for “Wisdom,” “Truth,” and “Knowledge,”
the three Greek words inscribed on the seal. In the
center of the seal stand the “Doors of Opportunity,”
welcoming all students who seek to join the
tradition of excellence, which has been the hallmark
of Navarro College since it was chartered in 1946.
Significance of the White Tassels
The white tassels signify those students who have successfully completed the
requirements of the Honors Program, including a minimum 3.25 GPA and 15 hours
of community service. These students graduate with the cum laude distinction.
Significance of the Veterans Cord
Navarro College recognizes graduating veterans. They wear red, white and blue
cords as a special form of recognition for their service to their country. Veteran
degree candidates are invited to wear the cords with their academic regalia during
commencement ceremonies. The cord signifies the appreciation Navarro College
has for our military and veteran students for their commitment, selfless service and
sacrifice.
Significance of the Regalia Worn By the
Navarro College Graduates
Phi Theta Kappa
Students who have earned a 3.5 or better grade-point average are invited to join
the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for community colleges. The three
ideals represented by Phi Theta Kappa are three Greek words meaning wisdom,
aspiration and purity. The symbols shown on the stoles worn by the graduates convey
the three ideals.
Psi Beta
Students who have earned an overall grade-point average of 3.5 or better and who
have successfully earned a “B” or better in a psychology class are invited to join Psi
Beta, the National Honor Society in Psychology for community colleges. The gold
medallions worn by the students have the Psi Beta seal and are suspended from a
wide royal blue and gold 32-inch neck ribbon. The honor cords are double gold ropes
with royal blue and gold tassels. The royal blue and golden yellow colors of Psi Beta
represent wisdom, truth, science, and research.
Sigma Kappa Delta
Students who have earned a grade-point average of 3.5 or better with a “B” average
in English are invited to join the Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society. Students
with green and gold honor cords represent Sigma Kappa Delta The motto of Sigma
Kappa Delta is “Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design.”
Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude
and Cum Laude Honors
Summa Cum Laude
Summa Cum Laude is an honor bestowed upon students receiving associate degrees
who have compiled a perfect academic record. To graduate summa cum laude, a
student must have achieved a 4.0 grade-point average on all work attempted at
Navarro College and other post-secondary institutions attended.
Magna Cum Laude
Magna Cum Laude is an honor bestowed upon students receiving associate
degrees who have compiled an almost perfect academic record. To graduate magna
cum laude, a student must have achieved a 3.50 grade-point average on all work
attempted at Navarro College and other post-secondary institutions attended and
have no grade lower than “C.”
Cum Laude
Cum Laude is an honor bestowed upon students receiving associate degrees who have
compiled a superior academic record. To graduate cum laude, a student must have
achieved a 3.25 grade-point average on all work attempted at Navarro College and
other post-secondary institutions attended and have no grade lower than “C.”
