Baltic States: Countries with port access to the Baltic seas. Important for the Soviets to maintain
control of warm water ports (shipping, trade, movement of arms). Color Blue.
Breadbasket States: Countries that produced the most grains and crops. Without them the Soviet
army and people could not eat. Color Yellow.
The Caucasus States: Countries near the Carpathian Mountains. Provided a secure border and
barrier to the rest of Europe/Middle East for the Soviets. Color Purple.
Central Asian States: Largest territory gains by the Soviets. They wanted to extend their power
across Asia, but knew that they would not be able to take on China. Color Green.
