Making a Cube Using Big Huge Labs

Making a Cube Using Big Huge Labs - Keynote Slides as Pictures
This lesson will show you step by step how to use Keynote to insert images, text, and shape and
save them as jpegs to use in other applications.
Make a Plan
It's always best before starting a project to make a plan about what you want to do. In this project,
we are making a cube of word families. Choose 6 word families, one for each face and a picture
that you will use to go along with that word family.
Open Keynote
Follow the image above to open the application Keynote. If you don't have iWork '09, it's okay
older and newer versions will work as well.
Choose Your Theme
In this instance, we will choose white slides. However, you can choose any of the templates
available. Click on the one you want and click Choose.

Choose A Blank Slide
Click the "Masters" icon from the tools at the top. Choose "Blank" from the drop down menu.
Customize your slide size
You will need to make your slides a square for this project since we are making cubes with Big
Huge Labs. Click on the Inspector Icon from the toolbar at the top. This will open a smaller
window. Click the document icon (first icon on the top of this window). Change the Slide Size to
"Custom slide size". A box will drop down asking for your slide measurements. I chose 800 x 800,
but you will need to make sure the width and length are equal so the slide becomes a square.
Change the Zoom
Next, we will change the zoom so that we can see the entire slide at once. In the bottom left hand
corner you should see 100% with a drop down arrow. Change the zoom to 50%.
Duplicate Your Slides
Now that your slides are just the way you want them, duplicate them for the other 5 slides. To
duplicate, click on the slide in the left navigation bar. Choose Edit > Duplicate or use the keyboard
shortcut (Command+D).

Add Your Word Families
We are going to add the word families (one per slide). Insert a text box by clicking the text box icon
on the top. It will place a text box in the middle of your slide. Double click inside your text box and
type in the word family. You can change the font and size by highlighting the text and using the
formatting at the top. Once you settle on font, size, and placement you can copy the text from slide
one and paste it in the other 5 slides. Go to each slide and change the text to match the word
family.
Add Boxes for Beginning Sounds
Create a square with the shapes tool.
Click the Shapes icon at the top. Enlarge or reduce to match your text. Position the square in front
of the text.

Click Inspector. Choose the shapes icon in the smaller window. Change the Image Fill to None.
Copy the box you made and paste it on the other 5 slides positioning it in front of the text.
Let's go get some pictures.
Navigate to Google. We are going to search for images, but we want to do an advanced search.
To start, search for one of your word families - like HAT. On the left, click "Images". Then on the top
right corner, you will see a gear. Click the gear and choose Advanced Search from the list.
Advanced Searching for Images
When getting pictures from the internet, it is important that you follow copyright since you do not
own the pictures.
Advanced Searching allows searching with specific usage rights.
Click the radio button "Only images labeled for reuse."
We don't plan on modifying or selling what we are doing so there is no need to check these boxes
now.
Click Search Images in the bottom right corner.

Saving a Picture
Once you find an image you like, click that image and click "Full Size Image" on the right.
Pay careful attention here to the size of your full size image. If it is too small, then it will become
pixelated when you try to enlarge it later. Once your full size image has loaded, you are going to
right click on it and choose Copy Image from the drop down list.
Pasting Your Image
Go back to Keynote by either clicking the Keynote icon on your dock or using a keyboard shortcut
(Command+tab). Paste your picture onto your workspace. (Edit>Paste or Command+V). Enlarge
or reduce your image to fit into your slide.
Copying & Pasting Your URL
We are going to copy and paste the URL into the slide to give credit to the photographer by
sharing its location on the Internet.
Go back to Safari (remember the shortcuts in the previous step). Right click on the image and
choose Copy Image Address.
Go back to Keynote and Paste (Edit>Paste or Command+V).

date you downloaded the image.

Export Your Slides As Pictures
Choose File > Export.
From the dialouge window, choose Images.
Then make sure All is selected and format is JPEG.
