Misiaszek Misiaszek Turpin PLLC In 2014, Belknap EDC focused on the three strategic goals it outlined three years ago: retain and attract young talent; support creative entrepreneurs; and enhance workforce development programming. We also added a new goal to our strategic plan: Be a pro-active catalyst, partner, investor, and/or owner in property development that enhances quality of place or economic opportunity in Belknap County. We look forward to playing a more direct role in driving new investment to parts of Belknap County that need it the most. We are pleased to report the following progress on our strategic plan in 2014. Goal 1: Retain and Attract Young Talent We invested in branding and marketing the organization to a younger audience in 2014. We used our new radio ad campaign, e-newsletter, and social media presence to push information relevant to young workers and entrepreneurs out into the community to generate positive word of mouth about the opportunities the Lakes Region offers. We also added significant new content geared toward young talent to our website, www.BelknapEDC.org. The “Meet Our Young Talent” page on the website features profiles of over 40 young professionals and entrepreneurs and we continue to add to it. We also created profiles of entry and mid-level jobs projected to be open over the next five years in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, finance & insurance, and hospitality. Recently, Forbes Magazine highlighted our strategic initiatives surrounding young talent recruitment and marketing, describing it as a best practice. Sally Holder of Laconia started in this capacity in October 2013. In her first full year on the job, Sally provided 701 hours of one-on-one counseling time in 445 separate sessions with 89 business owners/prospective business owners; 383 S. SCORE Counselors greet a business owner at the Resource Fair Ken Wilson, our part-time loan officer, continues to pound the pavement marketing our revolving loan fund. In 2014, Ken advised over 30 businesses on financing issues. Ultimately, five of those businesses became Belknap EDC loan clients last year, including Tilton Veterinary Hospital which expanded their operation in Tilton. Our investment in a dedicated loan officer is generating significantly more leads for our loan fund than we have seen in the past and is providing local businesses with a higher quality of service. For the fourth year in a row, we partnered with the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce in presenting the Lakes Region Business Resource Fair in September. The exhibit hall brought many local service providers together in one place for participants to browse and gather information to improve their business. We continue to Ken Wilson, Loan Officer, welcomes Tilton Veterinary Hospital as a loan client. work with the Chamber to bring inspiring and informational speakers and resources to this annual event. Goal 3: Enhance Workforce Development Programming Belknap EDC dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to addressing our region’s long-term workforce needs. As part of the 200 by 2020 Initiative, an outstanding local workforce development partnership initiated by the United Way and the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce in 2010, Belknap EDC spearheaded the creation of www.lakesregioninternships.com. This online database of internships and job shadows has grown quickly to include more than 100 internship and job shadow opportunities and is a valuable tool and resource for our local high school students and teachers. MEDC has served as a catalyst of redevelopment in the Greater Keene region and has provided valuable insight and strategic goals to assist Belknap EDC in its efforts to build economic opportunity in the Lakes Region.
