Newsletter 13 17th March 2017 Dear Parents, Something I am sure those of you who were able to visit during this week’s Open Sessions noticed is the school is looking particularly vibrant. Teachers have been working really hard to continue to develop the children’s learning environments both to promote independent learning as well as to celebrate the children’s work. Displays form an integral part of pupils’ learning – celebrating effort, guiding next steps in learning and promoting independence by providing examples for reference, such as key vocabulary, phonic blends and calculation examples. It has not just been parents visiting this week, we were also visited by our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner, Mrs Marie Harvey from Herts for Learning, who works with the Governing Board and myself to monitor standards of teaching and learning throughout the school. We visited every classroom in the school during the morning, watching lessons, speaking with children and looking at books. Mrs Harvey recognised the positive attitudes of the pupils, the excellent standards of behaviour and noted too the way advice received from curriculum advisors has been acted upon by staff to ensure our focus remains on continual improvements in teaching and learning in order that our standards are maintained. Further work on the development of a consistent ‘language of learning’ throughout the school and the development of greater challenge for all pupils through further development of the ‘mastery’ curriculum will be just some of the aspects the Governors and I will be incorporating into our school development plan over the coming months. We have also welcomed local schools and visited others to play both netball and football and you can’t escape the sporting escapades of our Key Stage 2 pupils this week – they have somewhat taken over the Newsletter - but I am delighted with both their efforts and enthusiasm and am really proud of their attitude towards their sports. Being reflective sportsmen and women is a vital aspect of improved performance and the tenacity shown by both squads has been really pleasing to see. You can read of their exploits below. In addition, Mrs Wakeman and Mr Barker have been working hard to source external providers to extend the availability of sporting clubs for our younger pupils in the summer term to ensure we continue to develop our ‘home grown talent’ for the future. More news will follow in next week’s Community Newsletter so do keep your eye out for the information and sign up fast to secure your places. You may have spotted some other visitors this week, visitors of the feathered variety – Margot, Jerry and Tom usually put in an appearance at this time of year - and although I am not sure they will stay for long, they do bring a smile to the face first thing in the morning. It has also been good to know I am not the only one who talks to them! I wish you all an enjoyable weekend, Kind regards, Suzanne Webb Top Bananas These children received Bananas Awards last week for ‘Being Resilient’ C1 Theo C12 Alfie C2 C3 Arthur, Harry C34 Sophie, Alice C4 C5 Megan C56 George C6 Lily, Eleanor Alex Charlie These children received Bananas Awards today for ‘Being Mindful’ C1 Lara C12 Harry C3 Duncan C34 Felicity C5 Oscar C56 Jacob Joe W Arianne Zoe C2 C4 C6 Top Bananas – Themes to follow: Date Top Banana How to support this theme at home Theme Week of Being a global To coincide with Comic Relief we will focus on developing an citizen awareness on life beyond our Harpenden ‘bubble’ to think about 20th March how we can support others to fulfil their potential. Talk to your child about how different life can be for other children in the world. 27th March Being healthy Discuss with your child the different ways they can stay healthy, through physical activity, healthy eating and staying hydrated. Encourage a ‘healthy body makes a heathy mind’ approach to the last week of term and make the most of the (hopefully) warmer weather to spend longer outside! Dentist Visit On Wednesday, children in Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from Esther Hathorn from Visage Dental. As part of their science learning on teeth, the children have been learning about the different types of teeth that humans have, what they are used for and how to look after them. The children asked lots of interesting questions, listened brilliantly and really enjoyed their sessions. At the end of the afternoon, they all took home a timer to help ensure that they are cleaning their teeth for the recommended 2 minutes! Young Filmmakers Club In Assembly today we were delighted to welcome Jo Ann who introduced her Filmmakers Club to the children. This will be running after school on Wednesdays next term. Please see the attached flyer for details on how to enrol your child. Active Kids Vouchers Once again Sainsburys are running their Active Kids Voucher Scheme. Over the years we have collected lots of vouchers and this has enabled us to replenish and renew a wide variety of sport equipment. We look forward to once again being able to order new and exciting things to enable our PE lessons, outdoor areas and playtimes to be as well resourced as possible. Please send your vouchers into the school office. Ways to collect: Sainsbury’s Local - In Sainsbury’s Local stores you’ll get one voucher for every £5 you spend. Sainsbury’s Supermarkets - Every time you shop at a Sainsbury’s Supermarket you’ll be given one voucher for every £10 you spend at the till. Online - You’ll still receive the equivalent of one voucher for every £10 you spend. But they’ll all be printed on one piece of paper up to the maximum value of 50 vouchers – so make sure you keep it safe. SEND Coffee afternoon We will be holding a coffee afternoon for parents of pupils with SEND on Wednesday 22nd March at 2.15pm. This is an informal opportunity for parents to meet our new SENDCo, Steph O’Neill before she takes on the role after Easter. Please email the school office to confirm your attendance by Tuesday 21st March. I look forward to seeing you there. Mrs Shore Sports Roundup Sports Premium activities. During the Spring term Year's 5 and 6 have had specialist tag rugby sessions delivered by Harpenden Football and Rugby Club coach Gavin Lendon. These sessions have built on the work that the children covered during the Autumn term, by focusing on the tactics and techniques required for individuals and teams. During the last session children took part in an inter house tag rugby tournament, which required them to play in their house teams. Our grateful thanks go to Mr Francey who helped arrange for us to have Gavin in school and to Gavin, who gave up his time to come into school during the working day. Mr Barker & Mrs Wakeman "I thought the sessions were managed very well as they were enjoyable and everyone was involved" Alex P C5 "I really enjoyed the matches that we played and the sportsmanship that everyone showed." - Abi L C6 Netball On Monday 6th March we welcomed Crabtree to our school. This was to be our first home match and everyone was very excited to be playing. The A team started off incredibly well with 2 excellent goals scored by Ben. The team played brilliantly and I could really see that they have improved and had got better at their passing. The team continued to do well and finished off with a final score of 7 – 3. The B team, made up of Year 5, were enthusiastic even when they found out they were playing more experienced Year 6's. They played well and the score, 9-1 to Crabtree, didn't reflect how much they have improved. I was really pleased to see that there was better passing, that they were driving forward towards the goal and were able to intercept the ball. After the matches finished, myself and the other teacher from Crabtree suggested that we did a 10 minute training game where we could stop the children and explain how to get better. This was excellent and the A team won 2 - 0 and the B team lost 3- 0. The afternoon was very enjoyable and lots of fun was had. On Monday 13th March, I took an eager team of girls to compete in the Harpenden School Sports Association Netball tournament. The sun shone and the girls loved representing the school. They played 6 matches and although there were mixed results against each school, they played fairly, showed great sportsmanship and got better with every match. Tara C- S and Sophie B did a great job scoring goals along with Abbie and Zoe helping move the game speedily along. We got really hot and loved running around. By the end my hands hurt from catching the ball so many times." Elsa "I had a great afternoon because it was really warm and sunny. We did surprisingly well and I'm looking forward to playing again next year." Eva "I have really enjoyed the afternoon because we got to play my favourite sport. We played really well and even lost some we still persevered through." Abbie Tennis We are very grateful to Mr Lawlor and Harpenden Tennis club for kindly regripping lots of tennis rackets used in PE lessons. After a very kind offer and conversation with him, Mrs Lawlor collected the rackets and less than a week later we had them returned with lovely new colourful grips. We all look forward to using these again in our PE lessons. Thank you. Mrs Wakeman Football Tournament On Monday 6th March we took part in the Harpenden Schools Partnership Sports Football Rally at Wood End. We started off really well with a 5-0 win against Manland before a very close 1-0 loss to the Grove. Our performance picked up again when we managed to beat St Dominic's 3-2, before our final game saw us lose 3-1 to The Lea. Although we came second in our pool, we didn't manage to qualify for the semi-finals. I was very impressed with how all of the children conducted themselves throughout the afternoon and with the positive attitude even after games hadn't gone our way. On Wednesday 8th March we welcomed Crabtree in the last round of the Harpenden Schools Partnership Football League. The blue team started off very positively as George N heading the ball over the goalkeeper to take the lead. However Crabtree reacted well scoring before half time to leave the score 1-1. With a minute left in the game it took a well struck shot from Tom A to seal the victory for Roundwood. The blue and yellow team managed to secure a 0-0 draw in the other game. I would like to say thank you to all of the children who have represented the school within the league games this year. Mr Barker Digital Parenting Magazine New copies of Digital Parenting Magazine have arrived in school. Miss Barltrop Comic Relief This year's Red Nose Day will soon be upon us, Friday 24th March. The School Council have decided on a red themed non-uniform day for a suggested donation of £2 and a cake sale to be held after school (any baking donations would be greatly received, if they could be left at the school office on that morning please) along with lots of other fun activities throughout the day. The School Council Lunch arrangements – Key Stage Two Please note that the deadline for payments for Key Stage Two lunches is 29th March. Parent Volunteers for lunchtime Periodically we like to request if there are any parents who could spare an hour to help at lunchtime. We already have a number of amazing parents who have helped out over the last few years but we would like to put out a fresh call for help. If you feel you could offer help, between 12 and 1pm and you are DBS/CRB checked, please let the office know. Many thanks. Law change for using your mobile phone whilst driving It is illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving, or riding a motorcycle - this is still the case stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. Did you know? It is also illegal to use a hand-held mobile when supervising a learner driver or rider. New penalties now mean that motorists and motorcyclists caught using a phone while driving and riding will receive six penalty points on their licence and a £200 fine. This means that new drivers, within two years of passing their test, run the risk of losing their licence for a single offence. Keep safe – put your phone away in the glove compartment.
