Not only is interagency cooperation critical in effectively combating
counterfeiting and piracy, regional and international coordination is
necessary to combat the global nature of the illicit activities. Panelists will
discuss what is needed to build and sustain effective enforcement
cooperation between rights-holders and government as well as between
enforcement agencies. They will also explore new and continuing challenges
such as enforcement at the regional and global level against IP crime on the
Internet, overcoming corruption issues and insufficient training and
resources.

Summit attendees experience a unique opportunity to meet with officials
from various Latin American countries. Government officials will host
discussions in designated areas with summit participants on aspects of their
countries’ IP enforcement and policies. Industry attendees can, in turn, ask
the officials relevant questions. The Forum will be divided into two 35minute sessions during which conference attendees can participate in two
country tables. Additional networking opportunities are available
throughout the event and during the breaks.

Panel 3 - Consumer Safety: Making the Protections Real When Trends

Counterfeits are made with substandard materials that oftentimes have
harmful or even fatal effects on consumers who use them. Government and
industry speakers will discuss enforcement efforts to address counterfeiting
and consumer safety in counterfeit products like fake electronics, medicines,
food, agriculture, etc.

Panel 4 - Ensuring a Transit Hub for Legitimate Goods - (Merrick
Ballroom)
Free trade zones can be a hotbed of IP crime as counterfeiters take
advantage of free trade zones and ports with weak enforcement to transship
counterfeit products. For many countries, legal and enforcement changes are
needed to address this issue. Speakers will discuss the need for increased
efforts to ensure a country’s free trade zone does not become a transit hub
of illegitimate goods and illegal activity. Panelists will also discuss labels,
packaging, storage and destruction issues.
