Chapter Members:
Spring came in with a bang, plenty of rain in the second quarter. Heat and humidity have returned. There are
record breaking temps across the country. Remember to drink lots of water, wear light clothing, and protect
exposed skin from the sun.
Some Chapter members made a ride to Colorado. Left town the first day in on/off rain until we reached
Amarillo. When we finally arrived in Durango, the weather was perfect. Rode numerous routes including the
“Million Dollar Highway.” Enjoyed the rides, fellowship, and magnificent scenery. Thanks to Janice Kelley for
all of the beautiful photos of the ride.
The Activity Officers have plenty of events scheduled in the coming months. Officers are always looking for any
suggestions for rides. The Dealership also has events scheduled.
The question of “Who Can Belong To H. O. G?” has been asked in our Chapter. After some research, we have
found that other Chapters have been asked the same question. According to H. O. G. we have always allowed
non-Harley owners to join as associate members. Associate members may be riding on the back of a Harley or
once rode and can no longer ride.
Another frequently asked question concerns members who ride other brands. We would like everyone to be
on Harleys, but it is the local dealership’s call regarding who can ride and on what on a Chapter ride.
Remember, our goal is to ride and have fun and if we are doing that correctly these issues will resolve
themselves. Talk the talk but more importantly walk the walk or ride the ride…show all out there that we want
everybody on a Harley and riding with the Biggest, Baddest and Best Riding Club in the whole world.
Just a reminder, at the end of August meeting nominations for 2017 Primary Officers will start and end after
the September meeting. Those nominated will be announced at the October meeting and address members.
Remember to drink lots of fluids, ride, and have fun!
Saddle up, Let’s ride!
Mike Shepherd, 2016 Chapter Director
Greetings Everyone,
Well, summer is here and that generally means HOT humid days and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms
in southeast Texas. So keep both in mind when you plan your rides. Drink plenty of water before you even
head out the door and keep yourself well hydrated while on the road. Don’t neglect to re-fuel your body when
you stop and re-fuel the bike. Also, be sure to pack your rain gear, unless you are one of those folks that prefer
to get wet and ‘air dry’ at 75 mph…. But seriously, have an idea of what the weather conditions may be for the
day and keep an eye on the sky. Conditions can change drastically in the summer, so be prepared to re-route
or to get off the road and find a safe haven while a bad storm passes.
Since you are more likely to be on the road during the summer, you can have some peace of mind being a H.O.G.
member. As part of your Full or Life membership, the H.O.G.® Roadside Assistance Program Standard Package
covers one H-D motorcycle and one service each calendar year with maximum coverage of $100. Call 1-888443-5896 for assistance. This number can be found on the back of your member card. Other packages are
offered at additional costs and have benefits which include additional motorcycles (even cars and light trucks),
unlimited services and emergency travel reimbursement. To learn more you can go to the H.O.G. member
website and search under Benefits.
There is a full schedule of chapter rides and events throughout the summer months so be sure to check the
calendars at the back of the newsletter and on the chapter website at: www.cowboyhog.com . The dealership
is also planning some exciting events in addition to their weekly Saturday Lot Parties and first Tuesday of each
month Bike Nights.
Keep in touch with chapter events on our Chapter Facebook Page, COWBOY H.O.G. #4974 at:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/169939654457/ Also, if you’re not set up on the Chapter E-Group, you can
do so by going to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HOGG4974/ This is where you can find the latest
information about what is going on in the chapter.
So Saddle Up…and Let’s Ride,

Hi Everyone,
Well, it is June already. That means, half of the year is gone. WOW!!!!
I hope everyone has been able to get some riding in. The weather hasn’t been very cooperative
lately. Rain, rain, rain!!! Now the weather will quickly be turning to “hot”!! Hope everyone can get a few
more rides in before it gets unbearable!!!
The membership total - as of June 1st was 408 members. If you know of someone who has not joined
the group yet, or is maybe thinking about it, talk to them and let them know what a fun time we have. The
many rides that are planned all during the month, the different and sometimes unique eating places we visit
and don’t forget the 10% off, in parts and motor-clothes, the dealership gives to our members!!! They might
not know what they are missing!!!
So until next time, get out there and enjoy as many rides as you can!!! As always, be Careful and Ride Safe!
Blessings,
Gail Holcomb, Treasurer

Hi Ladies of Harley,
Well 2016 has started out pretty slow; however, it is now riding season and playing time.
Between all the rainy days, we had a great ride to Yankee Tavern and the Washington on the Brazos for the
beautiful bluebonnets.
On Saturday, May 28 we had a LOH ride to the Loose Caboose Restaurant in Old Spring for a good ride with lots
of good food and a little shopping in the unique stores. The day turned out to be great for the riding and lots
of fun.
Thursday, June 16, 2016 we pretended we were great painters at Painting with a Twist in Beaumont, everyone
turned out to very talented. There was a great turn out and everyone had great laughs and just relaxed for a
couple hours.
July 14, 2016 at 6:00 pm will be "Christmas in July" the China Inn in Groves, Texas. Gifts may be something you
don't want or a new gift or a gag gift. Your choice. More details will be on the HOG Calender.
On June 4,2016 Ladies of Harley was represented on the Million Dollar Ride to Colorado by Janice Kelly, Christine
Shepherd, Jeanie Du Pont, and I. We all had a great time with lots of riding through beautiful country and lots
of laughs.
I had the honor to represent the Cowboy Ladies of Harley at the Harley Officer Training during May in
Shreveport, LA. There are lots of Ladies involved with Harley and they are a fun strong diverse group of Ladies
with great ideals for fun. I would love to share their ideals with our group. Looking forward to seeing more of
you join our family of Ladies in the events for lots of fun and relaxation.
Please let me know what you would like to do for events and rides. Talk to your friends and encourage them
to join us. The more the merrier. No drama just fun and laughter. Check out the Cowboy HOG Calendar for all
LOH activity.
Saddle Up!! Let's Ride!!

One of our dedicated chapter members, Raymond Simmons passed
away on April 30th. Ray always sat behind the counter at chapter
meetings selling 50/50 tickets. Raymond was a US Army Veteran.
He will be missed.

How to be Seen on Motorcycles
By Basem Wasef
Place yourself strategically in traffic.
"I never saw the rider" is one of the most common things automobile drivers say after they've struck a
motorcyclist, an unfortunate reflection on how easy it is for riders to slip under the radar. Here are tips on how to
stay visible while you ride. The first and most obvious way to avoid being hit is to stay out of the blind spots of
other vehicles and give yourself enough room to react. Ways to do so include:





Making sure you can see the drivers of the cars around you; if you can see them (through eye contact or in
their mirrors), chances are you're in their line of sight... but never assume anything.
Creating a safety buffer around you, which means leaving enough distance ahead of you, and giving
yourself space to maneuver away from trouble.
Avoid lingering in the blind spots created by the A-pillars and C-pillars of cars; those are the front 3/4 and
rear 3/4 angle views out of the driver seat. Passing can be a dangerous maneuver, so be especially aware
when overtaking a car or another rider.
If you're riding with a group, be sure to leave a safe distance around you, and ride in a staggered
formation for maximum visibility
.
Wear bright/reflective gear
Use reflective tape
Use hands
Tap Your Brakes
Use high beams when safe
Use Horn if Necessary
