Winter 2017 - Camp Winadu

W WINADU BUGLE
MESSAGE FROM TEAM WINADU
Dear Families:
It has been an exciting couple of months since you
received our last bugle and we are now counting
down the days to Summer 2017. These next several
weeks will be spent making final arrangements to
our program, concluding our off-season projects and
getting ready to greet and welcome our Summer
2017 staff. All of this as we get ready for the most
important day ahead…clap-in and welcoming our
campers off the bus for another amazing summer at
their summer home.
We started the Winter with our NY area reunion
seeing nearly 200 of our campers at Dave & Busters.
We had fun catching up with each one of them,
hearing about their Fall/Winter activities and
watching them reunite with their friends. Thank
you to each family that participated in our Winadu
Thanksgiving Food Drive, donating canned goods for
the Interfaith Food Pantry. We also enjoyed
spending time at our Florida Reunion – seeing
several Lobos, current campers and new campers.
We bowled, played video games and enjoyed the
company of our camp family as we reminisced and
looked forward to camp. Again, our camp
community displayed our campership values by
collecting cleats/sneakers for children not as
fortunate and donating them to Clicks4Cleats.
The improvements to the facility have been nonstop and substantial. Besides the new inflatables for
the Lake, this year the Aerial Adventure Course
(which was new last summer) will be expanded with
several new and higher elements plus a Zip Line.
By the time you receive this Bugle, the Dining Hall
upgrades will be completed. The old windows have
been replaced with brand new and larger windows
allowing a view of Onota Lake. In addition, campers
will be able to eat outside on our new outdoor
eating deck also overlooking Onota Lake. Lastly, the
Dining Hall benches will now be joined with new
cedar dining hall tables built by Jim and his team.
The Lakefront is also receiving a major renovation –
how can we renovate the Lake? We are expanding
the Lakefront by removing the path leading to the
theater and replacing that area with new sodding in
time for Summer 2017. We can’t wait to have new
inflatables, new boats and a new and expanded
Lakefront.
The Program is also starting to take shape. We are
finalizing our tournament and intercamp schedule,
booking our favorite outside entertainment and
planning socials, confirming and adjusting our trips
to make them even better and more exciting as well
as implementing new ideas. If you have any, please
let us know. We intend to add more special events
and make the existing ones even more exciting and
have begun working on the Color War break.
Most of all, the main feeling amongst our full-time
team is excitement, we are excited to be back with
each of you and share with you all that is described
above. This month we attended the largest camp
conference of the year, the Tri-State Camp
Conference, and we look forward to learning more
to make this summer the best and return to
#mysummerhome.
Best,
Jared, Jill, Bennie, Alissa & Mike

Alissa’s New Camper Corner
Throughout the months of September – May, Jared and I spend our time traveling around the country
visiting this summers’ new campers. We love to meet everyone, get to know them all while they are
getting to know us. During our visits, many new campers often ask the same questions and here are some common
questions and answers to get you ready for Summer 2017.
Q: What happens on the very first day of camp?
A: I wait all year, for the very first day of camp! The
excitement begins very early in the morning and goes late
into the night. It’s a long day for everyone but super fun!
Whether you are traveling to camp by plane or bus there
are counselors traveling with you chaperoning you to
camp. You will know they are Winadu counselors because
they will be wearing Winadu Staff shirts. Once on the
plane or bus, you are assigned a seat. You are sitting next
to another camper in your age group so you can get to
know someone on the ride to camp.
where all of your clothes are already unpacked and your
bed is made. We go right to lunch and then to activities.
Friday, June 23rd can’t come soon enough!!
Q: What are some of the favorite meals at camp?
A: There are so many meals to look forward to at camp:
Taco Tuesday - ** my favorite**
Chicken Patties on Sundays
Sunday night Pizza
Lazy Friday Breakfast – there is always something
sweet!
The Grill - hamburgers, hotdogs, etc.
Camp traditions start immediately and we greet you with
our traditional “clap-in.” This is a huge high five line where
all of the counselors eagerly await your arrival. Your
Group Leader will be waiting to take you to your bunk,

shaving cream fight). See my photo above:)

Catching up with Adam Franklin
(1989-1996 as a camper and 1997-2000 as a JC & Counselor)
Q:What are your fondest memories of
Winadu and are you in touch with
some of your bunkmates?
A: My fondest memories of camp
were the friends made with both
fellow campers as well as
counselors. I am in touch with a lot
of people from camp including
Doug Miller, Zach Gingold, Justin
Siegel and many more. The great
thing about Winadu is that it is a
common bond held whether you
were there for 1 summer or 10
summers. I feel like everywhere I
travel, whether it is work or
personal, I run into someone from
camp. My wife and I joke about
“how many Winadu people we will
see” when we are away. It really is
amazing. I have been all over the
world and Winadu alums just seem
to find each other.
Q: How has your experience at
Winadu helped you throughout your
professional career?
A: I think the motto of “Character
Training Through Sports”
resonated with me the most.
Understanding the importance of
sportsmanship and being a part of
a team has been an integral part of
the culture I am working to create
at my company. We are extremely
competitive and always on what we
call the “attack”, but at the same
time we are respectful of our
competition.
Q:Tell us about your career? What
do you love about it?
Q:What was your favorite activity
when you were a camper?
A: Currently, I am the 3rd
generation in our family owned
sporting goods business. I am lucky
to be able to work side by side
with my biggest mentor, my father.
The beauty of our industry is that
things are changing every day and
the combination of old school and
new school has given us a strategic
advantage in many areas. We pride
ourselves on being ahead of the
game when it comes to ECommerce which is where the
Sporting Goods world is rapidly
heading. We have worked very hard
to develop industry leading
platforms like our Custom Batting
Glove website and a B2B platform
that has been touted as best in
class by our customers.
A: As I got older as a camper, I
loved being out on the lake and
waterskiing. Honestly, just being
able to spend the afternoon chilling
out on Lake Onota was pretty
special. I remember Jon Ballin and I
would take waterskiing for clinic,
selective, rest period and any other
opportunity we had so that we
could spend the entire afternoon
out on the lake.
All of our Major League Baseball
professionals now use our Custom
Batting Glove site to design the
gloves they wear each season. It’s
hard to explain the feeling I get
when I see a guy like Ben Zobrist
winning the World Series MVP last
year in gloves we designed
together at Spring Training using
our custom website.
Q:What years were you at Winadu as
a camper and/or counselor?
-5-
Q:When are you coming back to visit
us at Winadu again?
A: Hopefully soon! My wife has still
never been down the Birch Tree
Path and my son Jake will be 4 this
May so I am thinking “Super Brave”
is in his near future.
A: 1989-1996 as a camper and then
1997-2000 as a JC and counselor.
Those dates may be off, but when
people ask me how many summers
I was at Winadu, I tell them not
enough!

REMINDERS:
Make your doctor’s appointment for your son's camp physical. Don’t forget to give your doctor the Camper
Medical Form (Must be signed by a Physician) and have the doctor complete it. Due to late Spring/Summer birthdays,
