THE STATE OF
BRITAIN’S CHILDREN
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A KID
GROWING UP IN 2015 BRITAIN?
YESTERDAY a panel of First News readers delivered the
findings of our huge survey into the State of Britain’s Children.
by editor Nicky Cox
The good news is that most of you are happy! The bad news is that there’s quite
a lot that is worrying you, too. The age where you get most stressed is around
11/12 – just as you’re moving from primary to secondary school. Is enough
being done to make that change easy for you?
After concerns about the health of your family, your biggest fear is of crime
and terrorism.
There have been a lot of reports about a rise in cyberbullying.
But you tell us that, although online bullying is a bit of a
problem, face-to-face bullying remains a much bigger issue.
Turn to pages 14 and 15 for more findings and see next
week’s First News for part 2 of the State of Britain’s Children.
Tom Daley: I think about the gold every second of the day
WITH less than a year to go until the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Tom Daley tells First News that his eyes are
on the prize – a gold medal – more than ever, after picking up bronze at the London 2012 Olympics.
First News caught up with Olympic diver Tom Daley to
talk about the issue of bullying, ahead of Anti-Bullying
Week in November. Tom, who experienced bullying at
school, is the new face of Cartoon Network’s anti-bullying
initiative, CN Buddy Network.
We asked Tom how training for the Rio Olympics was
going. Tom said: “Training is really hard, but it’s going
well. I’m in Florida for a couple of weeks for outdoors
training, since Rio will be outdoors.”
And it seems Great Britain’s golden boy definitely has
his eyes on the big prize! On the chance of winning gold
next year, Tom said: “It’s the thing I think about every
single second of the day. It’s my life!”
In August next year, Tom will join more than 10,000
athletes at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Look out for the full interview with Tom in a future
edition of First News, where we talk to him more
about Rio, his gold medal dreams, his anti-bullying
work and First News’ Stamp Out Bullying.
