December 2013
A TWIG OR TWO
By Charlene Cleveland Shields
GREETINGS FROM THE HEARTLAND!
All fall there are festivals at the little towns in Southern Illinois. According to Mike Brush of GSSI, they
include: Shrimp Roundup in Sandoval, Bean Days in Wayne City, Apple Festival in Murphysboro, Peach Festival in
Cobden, Jumpin’ Pumpkin Jamboree in Belleville, Chestnut Festival in St. Francisville, Catfish Days in Olmstead,
Appleknocker Festival in Flora, Prawn Harvest Festival in Golconda, Fluorspar Festival in Rosiclaire, Pumpkin
Festivals in Fairfield and Waterloo, and Popcorn Days in Ridgway. In White County it’s Oil Days in Grayville,
Mule Day in Enfield, Dairy Day in Norris City, and Corn Day in Carmi. Well, that’s all in the past for 2013, and
we’re into planning “It’s A White County Christmas.” Promotions and activities for that take up much of
December.
+ + + + +
This is the 70th year since Bing Crosby recorded, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” a hit which soon surpassed
“I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas” in popularity. The lyrics were by Kim Gannon, I believe, and the music
composer was Walter Kent who had previously written “White Cliffs Of Dover” for the British. You really have to
be a fossil to remember that song. WWII was raging, and at Christmas, in 1942, over one million Americans were
overseas. And as another old song goes “Ah, yes, I remember it well!”
+ + + + +
At Thanksgiving, I was reminiscing and told my grandkids how my Dad always gave the stock double
rations of feed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, plus other holidays. He was a farmer on a small scale, but each year
when he finished the harvest, he always took the proceeds from the last load of corn which was sold at the elevator
and donated it to CROP, a drive to help eliminate hunger in the world. I recently read about this charity in the
newspaper; I had completely forgotten about it.
+ + + + +
This seems a magical time of year. So many people develop “an attitude of gratitude” at Thanksgiving and
seem to maintain it throughout the remainder of the year. It would be a wonderful world if people could maintain
this attitude all year long.
+ + + + +
This came from a December, 1957, issue of Capper’s Weekly. The quotation from page one is attributed
to Eliza Hall: The vanishing days can take from us nothing that may not be restored by some day yet unborn.
+ + + + +
From Oren Arnold (1900-1980), an American writer, come these Christmas gift suggestions:
1. To your enemy, forgiveness.
4. To all, charity.
2. To an opponent, tolerance.
5. To every child, a good example.
3. To a friend your heart.
6. To yourself, respect.
+ + + + +
And now, lest you be more than a little weary of my philosophizing, I will close with the prosaic suggestion
that you note if your subscription to Roots and Branches is up. Most of you pay by the calendar year, so it is time
for most of you to renew. We hope you will do that for we don’t want to lose a single one of you. Also, we
appreciate any articles you contribute for publication. We welcome your suggestions and criticism as to how we
may improve this little newsletter.

A Summary of Our Annual Luncheon Meeting
The 11th annual luncheon meeting of the Genealogy Society of White County, Illinois was held
at noon on October 26, 2013, at the American Legion in Carmi.
Vickie Oliver, President, welcomed those in attendance and introduced the other members of the
Board of Directors of the Society. The Board also acknowledged three additional members of the Society
who had volunteered to work on its two major projects for the year.
Terri and Bruce Lagneau, of Princeton, Indiana, were introduced as the special guest members for
the day and applauded for their hard work of typing, editing and indexing all of the abstracts of the
obituaries published in White County newspapers for the years 1941 through 1948. These will soon be
published in a 3rd volume of the book series, Gone But Not Forgotten, and will be sold in addition to
Volumes 1 and 2 which are already available.
Vince Miller, of Catleff, Virginia, a third special guest member, was unable to attend the
luncheon this year, but was publicly acknowledged for creating and launching the Society’s new website
which is now up and running on the Internet.
All of the Society members present thanked Terri, Bruce and Vince for volunteering for their
projects and for all of their hard work in making our new obituary book and our website possible.
After guests dined at a buffet, they were entertained with a presentation by guest speaker, Todd
Atteberry. Mr. Atteberry is a professional photographer and the owner of the Green Mile Design Studio in
Carmi. His photography has appeared on the covers and in several books and magazines, and on
numerous travel and history internet websites. His photography and artwork have been featured at
exhibitions in both the U.S. and overseas. He is also a freelance illustrator and graphic designer for
various corporations, agencies and institutions, and is a travel writer for his own website “The History
Trekker” as well as for other organizations.
While displaying dozens of his photographs from his travel to historical places in New England
and the Midwest, Mr. Atteberry spoke about how urban legends, folk tales and ghost stories begin and
evolve over time, and how they may be based in part on some historical facts, they more often result from
the public’s imagination.
Some folk tales that were examined ranged from the origins of the stories of the first American
Thanksgiving and its traditions to the “Ride of Paul Revere” at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
Ghost stories related to the story of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and emerging from the Salem witch
trials in New England were explored along with tales and legends which have been repeated throughout
history in the Tri-state and White County areas.
At the end of the presentation, door prizes were awarded to two of the guests in attendance. The
prizes were copies of the publication, The Backward Book: Extracts from White County Illinois
Newspapers 1899-1905 and 1949-1955 by Barry Cleveland. Guests were then invited to review the
publications and photograph exhibits that had been set up by the Society and by the speaker, Todd
Atteberry.

GSWC Member Jeannette Maxey Pens “ISGS” Article
The eagle eye of Tom Kiehl spied an article in a current Illinois State Genealogical Society
Quarterly by one of our members, Jeannette Maxey.
The article was entitled “William Stewart Harvey 1851-1880,” and is about Jeannette’s ancestor
who was a native of Scotland. In introducing the author, the write-up says: Jeannette Spangler Maxey
graduated from Purdue University. She feels most fortunate that her Grandmother Spangler passed on all
of her family genealogical information and charged Jeannette with researching the descendants. Her
search began in the 1970’s and still continues. Jeannette resides in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The article merits four pages in the quarterly and has copious end notes. Those of you who wish
to look up this article need to locate Vol.45, No. 2 of this state publication.
How Copyright Laws Relate To Genealogists
(The following article, by Jeannette Maxey, is based upon notes from the FGS Conference, August 24,
2013, presented by Judy G. Russell, a legal genealogist. Ms. Russell has a legal website/blog:
http://legalgenealogist.com/.)
As genealogists we use a variety of materials every day in our research reports, ranging from
books to various websites. We should be concerned with the proper use of these materials with regard to
their Copyrights. The Copyright is the way the preparer’s original creative works are protected by the
law. Copyright is available for creative work that is original and is in some tangible form (which can
include a digital format). There are a surprising number of possibilities including the usual you would
think of such as books, articles, reports or photos but actually also includes things like emails, You Tube
Videos and sound recordings to mention a few. If it is on the Internet it has automatically a Copyright—
something I don’t think many of us think about when we send an email or post a photo to a website.
There are consequences to misusing Copyright materials such as being faced with a lawsuit in
Civil Court for monetary compensation for damages and legal fees. What can you do to protect yourself
from violating copyright laws? First, know if a material has a Copyright. If it does, ask for permission to
use it or pay the license fee. These are some of the ways that will protect you. It is important to know
that you are responsible—it will not matter if you “did not know,” or owned a personal copy of the book
from which you quoted, or credited the author, or did not make any money from the quote or you found it
on the Internet. None of these explanations will count in your defense.
There are International agreements that broadly cover Copyright very similar to those in the U.S.
so be careful when using material from our overseas ancestors. Some of the things that are not covered
by Copyright would be facts such as the birth, marriage and death dates but the presentation of these facts
can be Copyrighted. While ideas are not protected under Copyright they may have protection through
patents. Speeches are not copyright protected but the materials, handouts, etc. can be protected. As are
recordings of speeches…or so I understand from recent Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream”
speech when it was replayed on the 50th anniversary. Working within copyright laws is quite complicated
so use reference resources for up to date information. There are many resources out there and here are a
few mentioned by the speaker:

Raleigh Sutton Authors another Book
Raleigh Sutton’s newest book is entitled, The Sutton Clan and the Families They Married Into.
Cotton, DeCotes, Godwin, and Malone of Virginia from the Beginning to Charley and Eliza.
Labor Day, 2013, was the 76th Sutton Family Reunion. Raleigh came with a CD of his book to
give to everyone in attendance. And our Society also received not only a CD but also a book!
Here are some excerpts from said book:
John Cotton, the Puritan of Massachusetts
John Cotton was born December 4, 1585, in Derby, England and died December 23, 1612, in
Boston, Massachusetts. He was a dissenter of the Church of England refusing to kiss the Bishop’s ring in
obedience and servitude stating that it was improper for a man to act in such a manner.
He and his family boarded the ship “Griffin” before the King’s police arrived to arrest him. He
and his family settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was the minister at Saint Botolph’s Church in
Boston. As a Puritan, he wanted to do away with ceremony and vestments of the Anglican Church and
preach in a more consensual manner. He was at Saint Botolph’s for 20 years while many other ministers
were removed for having the same views. It was said that he was responsible for exiling Roger Williams
who settled the Rhode Island Colony.
John was married twice, once with Mary Howkredd and had six chldren: 1. Seaborn Cotton was
born on board the “Griffin” at sea thus his name. He was born August, 1833, and died April 19, 1686.
He married Dorothy Bradstreet, the daughter of the founder of the Plymouth Colony. 2. Sarah Cotton, 3.
Reverend Roland Cotton, 4. Elizabeth who married the Rev. James Ailing, 5. Maria Cotton who married
Rev. Increase Mather, 6. Rev. John born Jan. 15, 1638, in Boston, and married Joanna Rosseter.
In another section of the book, the sale of Richard Sutton’s personal estate takes place in 1868:
1 sow to Dempsey Sawyer
5.00
2 hogs to Dempsey Sawyer
6.00
1 sow to Puss Sutton
.30
1 speckled heifer to Tobe Cathwright
12.25
1 red heifer to Allen Cotton
17.75
1 red muley cow to William Sawyer
21.00
1 bay mare mule to John Sutton
130.05
Total
$193.05
There are numerous wills in the book. One is the will of John Cotton III who died about 1742. . .
Itim. I give & bequeath to my son Benjamin Coten, my plantation whereon Phillip Edens now
dwells, to him & his heirs forever, only the said Edens to live thereon and enjoy the use hereof during his
natural life. My will & Desire is that my Land belonging to my said Plantations be divided as equal as
possible one half to the one plantation and the other half to the other, also I give my said son my black
horse, bridle and saddle and cane, one feather bed and furniture, one iron pot, two cows and calves, two
ewes and lambs.
Itim. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Anne Cotten, one bay mare and her increase, two cows
and calves, two ewes and lambs, and one feather bed and furniture, and one iron pot.
Itim. I give & bequeath to my daughter Sarah Cotten, my Negro wench, called Rose, and her
increase, only, my wife to have the labour of the said wench during her natural life; also, I give my said
daughter two cows and calves, two ewes and lambs, one iron pot.
Itim. I give and bequeath to my loving Wife Anne Cotten my negro fellow Mingo, to maintain
and school my small children; also give my said wife my working oxen for the plantation use; also I give
my said wife my grey horse and side saddle, and all my working tools not already given.
Remember we have the CD of the entire book. If you are interested in having a look, let us know
and we will mail it to you.
(I don’t know why I can never find a relative like Raleigh. He does all the work, even to hiring a
professional to straighten out the knots, puts it on CD’s and offers it to you free. Now that’s the kind of
cousin to have! Charlene)

CHURCHILL’S CHRISTMAS EVE MESSAGE, 1941
I spend this anniversary and festival far from my country, far from my family, yet I cannot
truthfully say that I feel far from home. Whether it be the ties of blood on my mother’s side, or the
friendships I have developed here over many years of active life, or the commanding sentiment of
comradeship in the common cause of great peoples who speak the same language, who kneel at the same
altars, and to a very large extent, pursue the same ideals, I cannot feel myself a stranger here in the centre
and at the summit of the United States. I feel a sense of unity and fraternal association which, added to
the kindliness of your welcome, convinces me that I have a right to sit at your fireside and share your
Christmas joys.
This is a strange Christmas Eve. Almost the whole world is locked in deadly struggle, and, with
the most terrible weapons which science can devise the nations advance upon each other. Ill would it be
for us this Christmastide if we were not sure that no greed for the land or wealth of any other people, no
vulgar ambition, no morbid lust for material gain at the expense of others, had led us to the field. Here, in
the midst of war, raging and roaring over all the lands and seas, creeping nearer to our hearts and homes,
here, amid all the tumult we have tonight the peace of the spirit in each cottage home and in every
generous heart. Therefore we may cast aside for this night at least the cares and dangers which beset us,
and make for the children an evening of happiness in a world of storm. Here, then, for one night only,
each home throughout the English-speaking world should be a brightly-lighted island of happiness and
peace.
Let the children have their night of fun and laughter. Let the gifts of Father Christmas delight
their play. Let us grown-ups share to the full in their unstinted pleasures before we turn again to the stern
task and the formidable years that lie before us, resolved that, by our sacrifice and daring, these same
children shall not be robbed of their inheritance or denied their right to live in a free and decent world.
And so, in God’s mercy, a happy Christmas to you all. –Winston Churchill
State of Missouri Levies “Bachelor Tax”
If you’re disgusted with some of the laws your state passes, consider this: On December 20, 1820,
the sovereign State of Missouri levied a Bachelor Tax. All unmarried men from the ages of 21 to 50 were
liable for a special tax of one dollar per year.
Scholars believe it was the husbands’ lobby that got the bill through. They couldn’t stand the
thought of unattached lads watching TV football when they should be messing with Christmas-tree lights!

In correspondence with other McKnight researchers, a deed was mentioned in which Josiah
McKnight, Sr., and Martha his wife gave land to Josiah McKnight, Jr., who was his nephew. It would
appear that Josiah, Sr., and Martha had no children. Martha and Josiah, Jr., were administrators of the
estate of Josiah, Sr. Their conclusion was that it was Josiah, Jr., who was married twice, first to Louisa
Jane Coulter and then to Desdemona Hodges.

Newspapers, Extracted by Verla Fleck Young and the Genealogy Society of White County Illinois. The second of a three-volume set, these

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, Volume 1, 1819 – 1927: Extracts of Obituary and Death Notices from White County Illinois Area
Newspapers. Extracted by Verla Fleck Young and the Genealogy Society of White County Illinois, Verla Young spent thousands of hours
extracting death information from 1872 – 1946 Carmi newspaper microfilm, and members of the Genealogy Society of White County have added
extractions from 1819 – 1871 newspapers in Shawneetown and Grayville. The result is a compilation of “dead relatives,” with dates, and, in later
years, many of their spouses, parents, siblings, etc. Some years were not microfilmed, and some had missing articles or sections, but the entries
that were readable are provided here for your genealogical enlightenment. 826 pages, 8½ x 11, hard-cover, indexed, $52.
THE BACKWARD BOOK: Extracts From White County Illinois Newspapers, 1899 – 1955, by Barry C. Cleveland, editor of The Carmi

in most cases, cause of death and parents’ names—including that often-elusive mother’s maiden name! Often, the survivors are listed with their
address at the time of death, which might give an answer to that common question: “Where the heck did they GO?” 206 pages, 8½ x 11, softcover, alphabetical, with full-name index of subsidiary names. $17.
I NEVER LEARNED TO MARCH, by Charles O. “Bill” Williams. Bill grew up on a farm in the Burnt Prairie area, surviving tornados,
floods, dust storms, and the depression years. He tells of his experiences in the Navy, during WW II, and his extensive travel to some very exotic
places around the world. Bill’s sense of humor is apparent, and you’ll laugh along with him as he relates his stories, looking back on the
Twentieth Century with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. 224 pages, 5½ x 8½, soft-cover. $10.
BEEN THERE DONE THAT, by Charles O. “Bill” Williams. Another look back on the Twentieth Century by our own Bill Williams. 250
