Introduction
Welcome to the fifth edition of the Go4Life Active Directory.
If you are looking to become more physically active but are not
sure where to start then this directory has the answer!
This directory will provide you with lots of information on a
wide range of physical activities to cater for the beginner, those
returning to exercise and those who want to try something different
in a fun and social environment. There’s also lots of information
about other ways to live more healthily.
If you would like to participate in sports not covered in this
directory, including more formal sports such as football, rugby or
tennis, then visit the Get Active Wesport online database at
http://getactive.wesport.org.uk
If you are a disabled person looking for opportunities to take up
sport across the wider West of England sub-region visit
www.sportsrush.org.uk
Please note that North Somerset Council does not take any
responsibility for the individual activities printed in this publication.
Please seek medical advice if you are at all unsure about starting
any physical activity.
The information in this publication is current as of July 2015. You
should contact the relevant instructor ahead of the activity to find
out more about the session arrangements.
This directory has been compiled by the Council’s Sport and Active
Lifestyles Team. For further information please contact us on

Just ten minutes of moderate physical activity twice a day, such as
walking or cycling to school, work or the local shops, could make all the
difference to your health.
Walking and Cycling
Walking and cycling
To keep healthy everyone needs to aim for at least 2.5 hours of
moderate physical activity per week, in bouts of ten minutes or more.
Health experts agree that walking and cycling are the easiest ways
for people to get the exercise they need.
Cycle maps are available from www.betterbybike.info or
from your local library.
Getting to your activity Go to www.travelwest.info – the one stop
shop for travel information across the West of England.
Bringing together information about public transport, walking and car
sharing, the website has a live arrivals and departures facility as well as
a multi-modal route planner.

Adult cycle training
If you haven’t ridden a bike for a
while (or maybe never) it can be
daunting to get back in the saddle.
One of the best ways to gain
confidence is to start with a couple
of free sessions with our friendly
trainer.
You can have up to two sessions,
either on a one-to-one basis, with
a partner or friend, or as part of a
group.
Our trainer will come to a location
of your choice, adjust your bike,
and if you’d like to cycle to work
our trainer can accompany you on
your work journey to advise you
on safety and build confidence.
Complete beginners are very
welcome and if you don’t have
a bike you can use our free twoweek Borrow a Bike scheme to
see if cycling suits you before you
purchase.
Save money, get fitter and feel
better this year!
Our Borrow a Bike scheme will
give you a taster so you can find
out if cycling works for you. Or
maybe you already cycle but
would like to try an electric bike or
a folding bike?
Choose from:
Cycling

l hybrid bike –

Volunteering in Sport
Volunteering in Sport
Do you have time to spare? Get
active and become a sporting
volunteer!
The Sport and Active Lifestyles
Team is seeking volunteers (aged
18+) in North Somerset to support
inactive individuals to get active.
There are many people who are at
higher risk of poor health in North
Somerset and require support to
help them exercise as they may
lack confidence to exercise alone
or may simply not have anyone to
exercise with.
We have a range of initiatives that
need volunteers. All you need is
a desire to take part in physical
activity and the willingness to
share that experience with others.
Training is provided for volunteers.
It may help if you are friendly and
like meeting people, are nonjudgmental and a good listener.
It’s all about making a difference,
getting fitter and having fun.

people to stop smoking.
Being able to say you have quit
smoking for good is the best news you
can give yourself and your loved ones.
But even if you have a slip, it doesn’t
mean you have failed in the long run.
Most people have several attempts
before they finally stop smoking. Each
attempt allows you to learn more
about your setbacks and add some
tools for future success.
In addition, there is a secret weapon
that can help you stop smoking –
regular exercise. As well as helping
to limit the weight gain which many
people experience when they stop
smoking, exercise has other benefits:
• Helps to deal with cigarette
cravings
• Decreases appetite
• Eases nicotine withdrawal
symptoms when you first quit
smoking
• Helps distract you from thoughts
of smoking
• Improves your mood
• Helps you cope with stress and
feel more energetic
