PRESENT PERFECT TENSES
Present perfect simple and present perfect continuous are both used to talk about things where there
is a connection between the past and the present.
Examples:
He has written 10 books.
They have been studying at the university for 2 years.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRESET PERFECT SIMPLE AND CONTINUOUS
Present perfect simple
is used to describe something that happened in an
indefinite time in the past
Example: I have finished my homework.
Present perfect continuous
is used when the focus is on an activity that is
unfinished
Example: I have been reading a book on
astronomy.
focuses on the result
Example: I have painted the living room
blue.
the focus is on the action
Example: I have been decorating the house
this summer.
talks about how much/how many have been
completed
Example: She has written ten messages.
talks about how long something has been
happening
Example: She has been writing emails for 3
hours.
is often used to show something is temporary
Example: I usually work in London but I’ve
been working in Birmingham for
the last 3 weeks.
is used to talk about how long when we view
something as permanent
Example: I have worked here for 30 years.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRESET PERFECT AND PAST SIMPLE
Present perfect
describes an unfinished action that started in the
past and continues to the present
Example: I’ve known Julie for 10 years.
Past simple
describes finished actions
Example: I know Julie for 10 years. (but
then she moved away and we lost
contact)
describes a finished action in someone’s life (when
the person is still alive; life experience)
Example: My brother has been to Mexico
three times.
describes a finished action in someone’s life (when
the person is dead)
Example: My great-grandmother went to
Mexico three times.
describes a finished action with a result in the
present
Example: I’ve lost my keys! (I can’t get into
my house now.)
describes a finished action with no result in the
present
Example: I lost my keys yesterday. (I have
new keys now.)
is used with an unfinished time word (this week,
etc.)
Example: I’ve seen John 3 times this week.
is used with a finished time word (last week, etc.)
Example: I saw John last week.
