Divergent Futures”. The IAF is a United States based, internationally renowned group of futurists that work with leading companies and other groups “aiding organisations to more wisely choose and create their preferred futures”. The report is both a comprehensive analysis of the chiropractic profession’s current situation in the United States as well as a considered analysis of four possible scenarios for the profession in 2025. The IAF also make 22 recommendations to the profession to move towards two possible “preferred futures”. While I highly recommend that all chiropractors read the whole report (it’s available free on the IAF website), the main message is simple – 11 of the 22 recommendations relate to the need for more research, faster! ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 research. These changes will continue to contribute to the activities of the Foundation for years to come. Thank you Ray! The years to come will see many challenges for chiropractic. Thank you for your ongoing support that has allowed, and will continue to allow us to generate research to move us towards our preferred future! Dr Martin Harvey President The IAF recognise that there are many areas in which chiropractic needs to be influential to move ahead. We need to generate positive PR, we need to influence government to legislatively create a level playing field, we need to influence third party payers as well as many other points of influence. What the IAF is telling us is that there is one thing in common with all of these areas – in each of them research is the currency of influence! If we want to move chiropractic toward a preferred future, investing in research is the most important strategy. With this in mind as I reflect on the last year I am extremely proud of a project that the Spinal Research Foundation has undertaken in the last year. Over the years we have focussed a lot on the inputs that the Foundation has been able to generate – the individual projects we have funded and facilitated and the more than $2 million that we have been able to invest in research. In this last year we have put in place a more rigorous process to track outputs. Members and supporters can go to the Spinal Research website and under the Research ---> Grants funded tab (1) see a rundown of the outputs of grants funded. Reading this shows a tremendous amount of “currency” has been generated to move chiropractic ahead. There are publications in many prestigious journals including JMPT, Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, Chiropractic Journal of Australia, Chiropractic and Osteopathy, Spine, Trials, The Spine Journal, The Journal of Chiropractic Education and Experimental Brain Research. In reading this it also needs to be remembered that there is more to come – 12 projects are currently in progress and others still have publications pending! I am extremely proud that this has been achieved while the Foundation has continued to employ a fiscally responsible and sustainable approach of investing funds in research based on the investment return. This means that when you, our supporters, have donated a dollar to the Foundation, that the dollar is still working to generate research and positive influence for chiropractic. None of this would be possible without the dedicated work of many people. I am honoured to work with a phenomenal board, a CEO, Roley Cook and a Foundation staff who all contribute to the work of the Foundation well beyond their roles. One contributor who I would like to highlight this year is Professor Ray Hayek. Ray has been a board member for 9 years and Chaired the Foundation’s Research committee for 8 years. During this time he contributed across a number of areas of Foundation activity. His contribution to profoundly upgrading the process by which the Foundation assesses research applications and the depth of expertise he was instrumental in bringing to the Research Committee through his contacts in the broader research world is one that has had a significant impact on the Foundation’s core business, (1)http://www.spinalresearch.com.au/Research/GrantsFunded/ tabid/467/language/en-US/Default.aspx Chiropractic 2025: Divergent Futures http://www.altfutures.org/chiropracticfutures 1 Highlights Over the past year the Foundation has contributed to increased chiropractic and research knowledge by hosting • 2 ‘Evidence Informed Paediatric Chiropractic’ seminars featuring Dr Joel Alcantara ...‘I would also like to thank those lovely souls at the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, its current and past presidents, and everyone that donates to them. Without their support I would not be in the position I am now, nor would I have completed so many studies.’ • 5 Jumpstart events for early career chiropractors and chiropractic students Excerpt from ‘The Reality Check’ by Dr Heidi Haavik • Dynamic Growth Congress in Melbourne, • 7 Dynamic Growth Experiences around Australia and New Zealand, B The Chiropractic Research Partnership continues to provide more research, faster. Dr Brett Foote joined to the Partnership at its launch and his contribution has funded a study by Susan Snodgrass BSc(PhysTher), ATC, MMedSc(Physio), PhD at The University of Newcastle titled “Neck Pain Biomarkers and Chiropractic Outcomes.” UR ter in Dougl The Douglas O. Winter Bursary, managed by Spinal Research, has been the recipient of a recent contribution in excess of $200,000, through the estate of the late Joan Dickson, a grateful patient of Dr Winter. It came to be because Dr Winter was willing to communicate to his patient about the importance of chiropractic research. The bursary will be managed as an endowment providing funding from the interest derived from the investment of the bequest. The annual interest will provide support to a student who meets certain qualifying criteria or a graduate who is continuing their studies to a higher degree, aligned to chiropractic research. O. W as SA R Y The Board of Spinal Research was pleased to allocate grant funding to Dr Samantha Harden to allow her to pursue her PhD. Dr Harden’s study is titled Muscle thixotropy, subluxation and clumsiness. Dr Harden will be working under the supervision of Assoc Prof Barbara Polus. Dr Polus has previously supervised PhD students Drs Nobuhiro Watanabe BAppSc, BCSc, PhD, Hiroshi Sasaki B.App. Sc (chiro). PhD, Karen Lucas - Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) Honours, Advanced Diploma in Myotherapy; PhD. each who have worked on studies funded under grants through Spinal Research. Business Continuity Plan We are grateful and excited to have the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) join the Chiropractic Research Partnership. The WCCS represent student leaders from all around the world and is the largest chiropractic student association. Spinal Research respects the passion and dedication these students have for the advancement of the profession, and are most grateful to have their support. Business continuity and risk assessment are essential business practices. The Foundation’s Board has endorsed a Business Continuity Plan that covers issues such as IT failure, theft and natural disasters. This plan also considers emergency planning and recovery plans. ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 Evidence Informed Paediatric Chiropractic with Dr Joel Alcantara The Foundation continued to deliver on that part of it’s mission that relates to disseminating knowledge to further the understanding, development and effectiveness of chiropractic care by hosting Dr Joel Alcantara to deliver “Evidence Informed Paediatric Chiropractic” Dr Alcantara has published numerous papers and is Research Director of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), Chair of Pediatric Research Life Chiropractic College West and Master of Public Health candidate, San Jose State University. In 2013 the Foundation conducted a review of the grant program processes and documentation. As a result a number of changes have been implemented. The Foundation now offers two major categories of research funding. These are intended to both encourage and support new researchers and novel ideas as well as support larger projects with a more developed evidence base and researcher track record. 1 Small Research Grants are intended to provide limited support for quality research projects relevant to the clinical practice and scientific basis of chiropractic. This includes clinical and practice-based studies, basic scientific research and health care management. Such projects could be pilot studies or preliminary research upon which larger a research project could be developed. Funding of up to $20,000 per year is available for between one and two years. 2 Large Research Grants are intended to support larger research projects relevant to the clinical practice and scientific basis of chiropractic. As for SRGs this includes clinical and practice-based studies, basic scientific research and health care management. LRGs will provide maximum funding of $120,000, usually up to $40,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Roley Cook has had his leadership and professional competencies recognised by admission as a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD). Mr Cook is also a Fellow of the International Institute of Directors and Managers. EOIs and Grants Our annual grant program is one way we fulfil our mission to facilitate research. In 2014, 14 expressions of interest were received and from this group, 11 researchers were asked to submit full applications. These applications are currently in the process of being assessed for funding. From the 2013 grant round the following studies were granted funds: • Neck pain biomarkers & chiropractic outcomes Chief Investor: Dr Suzanne Snodgrass • Chiropractic, Sensorimotor Integration and Function Chief Investor: Professor Bernadette Murphy Dr Martin Harvey has made a number of presentations over the last 12 months to grow increased international awareness of the Foundation. The highlights include the Currency of Influence presentation in California and also the Edinburgh lectures. Public Spinal Screenings 2014 saw the Foundation re-launch its Public Spinal Screening (PSS) campaign. The Foundation has renewed its Spinal Screenings literature with a new ‘How-to’ guide. The updated PSS material we provide includes exciting information on the new mobile and tablet Apps which can make performing Spinal Screenings even easier, hopefully leading to the benefits of chiropractic being available to more people in our communities and more research, faster. 3 Highlights (continued) Jumpstart Events Over the past 12 months we have held a number of successful workshops and events for emerging chiropractors. The Jumpstart Team would like to extend their gratitude to the many chiropractors that have donated their time to speak and present at these events. Their mentorship and desire to share experience and wisdom is contributing greatly to the professional growth of students and new graduates throughout Australasia. As part of its continued growth, Dynamic Growth Congress moved to Melbourne for 2014. Delegates were presented an inspiring, educational and entertaining weekend of top speakers at what is the largest annual chiropractic event in Australasia. A new segment to DG was added, a concentrated 6 hour ‘Science and Research Stream’ which was this year presented by Dr Heidi Haavik. It was a huge success, with delegates literally filling every last bit of space in the plenary. We are pleased to confirm that, due to awesomely positive feedback, both the Melbourne location and the Science Stream are here to stay for DG15. Fundraising We salute those community fundraisers who continue to walk, run, bike and swim their way to raising funds for Spinal Research. We now have a dedicated fundraising section on the Spinal Research website with information on how you can help raise funds for Spinal Research including links to your events. Thank you once again to the RMIT chiropractic students who kicked goals for the second year running with the annual Health Care Cup, a football match between RMIT chiropractic students and physiotherapy students from Latrobe University. With over 200 spectators, the event raised an incredible excess of $4000 for chiropractic research and greater community awareness for chiropractic, with all proceeds coming from students in both disciplines as well as their friends, families and mentors. Research Information documenting the progress of research which has been facilitated by Spinal Research is available on the Foundation’s website. These downloadable fact sheets include updates on current research, outcomes from past projects and how this is translated to the wider scientific community, the health sector and practising chiropractors. Dynamic Growth Experience’s (DGE) were held throughout the year in New Zealand, Western Australia, Brisbane, Victoria, New South Wales, North Queensland and South Australia. The theme for 2013 was “RAW” which focused on the RAW elements of chiropractic – encouraging the chiropractic community to get back to basics and focus on their skills, their team, their personal goals and everything in between. Close to 1000 chiropractors, chiropractic assistants’ and chiropractic students immersed themselves in the RAW elements of chiropractic at DGE and benefited from the many outstanding presentations and networking with their local peers. This year particular attention was made to making the DGEs more cost effective in raising funds for Spinal Research. This will continue to be a focus for the next few years. A special appreciation goes out to our valued DGE convenors who happily take the portfolio and work tirelessly to make their local DGE a success. We also appreciate those who support them, the many volunteers who help bring together these highly regarded events...AND THEY DO IT COMPLETELY VOLUNTARILY!” Research Committee Chair Report I would like to begin this report by thanking the entire team at Spinal Research headquarters. Without the tireless work of Roley and his team the output of the Foundation would be extremely diminished. Secondly I would like to acknowledge the Clinical Advisory Panel and the Research Committee (individual names listed next page) for the time they so generously donate. The CAP and RC are absolutely pivotal to the grant application process. The Australian Spinal Research Foundation each year invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) for grants to support research initiatives. The Foundation has established research priorities to support its vision to contribute and resource research that expands our knowledge base in health care delivery for the wellbeing of our community. One of the strengths of the research foundation is its grant application process. Earlier this year the Spinal Research board updated its “Research Culture Statement” to the following: The chiropractic paradigm hypothesises that chiropractic care facilitates a greater level of health, enhanced quality of life and human performance. ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 The 2013 grant round gives the chiropractic profession much to be excited about. The foundation received more than 22 expressions of interest from all corners of the globe. The high quality and large number of EOIs again raises the issue of funding. It is quite possible that many high quality projects will not be funded this year because of budgetary limitations. This is a further reminder for the Foundation and the chiropractic profession as the key stakeholder of the importance of continuing to support chiropractic research. Along with its rapidly growing global reach the Foundation has needed to once again update its processes to continue be in line with best practices. In the spirit of “more research, faster” the greatest challenge is continuing to remain in constant contact with our researchers. The Foundation is continuing to explore avenues where we can support the researchers in their drive to completion whilst at the same time meeting the needs of our stakeholders. Here in Australia we have seen a continual growth in the questioning of the validity of chiropractic care. The Friends of Science Movement continues to gain voice in the media. Common to all attacks are questions around the evidence base behind chiropractic practice. Whilst I am reminded of the saying “for the believer no evidence is necessary and for the skeptic none is possible” I think it is prudent that the Foundation continues to ramp up its efforts of producing more research, faster. Research will continue to be the critical tool that will open doors with government groups and healthcare influencers ultimately allowing the chiropractic profession to greater assist the community. The EOI provides concise information regarding the intent of the proposed research project, the clinical and/or scientific basis of the intended research and an indicative budget. Full submissions build on information provided in the EOI but provide more extensive details, particularly concerning the proposed methodology and the intended outcomes of the research project. Both EOIs and full grant applications will be subjected to the same merit-based review process. Scientific and clinical evaluation will be based on project merit and validity, likelihood of completion and delivery of intended outcomes and value for money. Both EOIs and full applications will initially be reviewed for clinical relevance and merit by the Clinical Review Panel prior to being assessed by the Research Committee for overall scientific merit. Full applications will, in addition, be subjected to independent external peer assessment prior to their rating and ranking by the Foundation’s Clinical Review Panel and Research Committee. Clinical Advisory Panel Research Committee The Foundation’s Clinical Advisory Panel (CAP) is one of the most critical aspects of our research process because it is what keeps our research relevant and focused on the chiropractic paradigm. The Research Committee covers the spectrum of health, chiropractic specific and medical research, including public health research initiatives. The committee will recommend to the Board of Governors the awarding of grants on the basis of scientific quality and as judged by peer-review. The committee may provide research support through a variety of mechanisms and where it deems involvement to be essential for that project to achieve its objectives. The panel is part of our process that creates the intersection of philosophy with science. The job of the CAP members is to review grant applications and assess them for their relevance to our priorities and make suggestions as to how they would be more relevant to chiropractic and practicing chiropractors. Professor Ray Hayek Jennifer Barham-Floreani George Skandalellis Honorary Consultants Brian Kelly John Hinwood James Chestnut Treasurer’s Report ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 Investing in the Future of Chiropractic Our long-term vision is of empowering people to have healthier, happier lives through chiropractic. The Foundation is keen to achieve immediate results but must invest in the longterm strength and position of chiropractic. That’s why our core business and activities are oriented with a long vision - knowing that we won’t accomplish that in this year, or the next, or maybe not even in the next decade. And, it’s reflected in our mission: Here is a summary of our financial results for the year under review. The full financial statements can be found at: www.spinalresearch.com.au/2013-14financials.pdf Revenue declined from $1.697m to $1.491m reflecting less event activity conducted across the year. Coinciding with the decline in revenue the expenses related to events also declined from $624,853 in the previous year to $288,164 in the year under review. Operating profit excluding grant payments rose to $207,592 compared to operating profit excluding grant payments in the previous year of $149,402. Donations accounted for 15.3% of total revenue and membership fees contributed 12.9%. The remaining 71.8% of revenue was earned through multiple fundraising activities, seminar fees and investments. 2013-14 Revenue and Other Income REVENUE AND OTHER INCOME Investment Income Investment 4% It’s a 2 part mission: 1. to increase the amount of relevant research that’s around, and 2. to heighten the competence of you, the chiropractor, by advancing your application of the relevant information. The right research will vastly advance our profession in numerous ways. It will validate the profession’s focus on the location, analysis and adjustment of the vertebral subluxation - validating what we do and validating what we say we can achieve. It will position chiropractic as a vitalistic, scientific, evidence‐informed clinical practice. It will allow us to gain a higher degree of respect, understanding and acceptance in the healthcare marketplace, in the scientific community and amongst the people we serve. And, the right research will strengthen how much our people value our care, how much they value us, as well as how much we value ourselves. The right research will also heighten how much the public and other professions value us and our ability to reliably, validly show that chiropractic care (what we do) gets results – that it elicits valuable outcomes for people. That’s where we’re investing your funds. Because now, more than ever, it’s time to show how much people benefit. And, it’s not just about investing money in to creating more research, but also in to up-skilling chiropractors, so that we advance the profession in its competency. What we know is that to have major advancement in the field of vertebral subluxation research, we need to have focussed organization, we need to have governance in the research infrastructure and we need to have ample funding. Through the Foundation, we do have the great organisation; and we have brilliant research infrastructure. But we are grossly underfunded for the outcomes we’d love to achieve. 15% Donations 4.3% Misc Fundraising 33% Misc Fundraising This cannot be achieved overnight; both steps take time. But with the right strategy, applied consistently over time, we know we can get there. And the need to achieve our vision is very real. What we want is to be better at helping people through chiropractic. Because we do believe that people’s lives are better with chiropractic. We believe that the subluxation is detrimental to people’s health and that it is prevalent in the people in our communities. And we believe that adjusting people will improve their health. Would it be useful to have major advancement in researching and understanding these areas? Donations Income The mission of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation is to facilitate research and disseminate knowledge that furthers the understanding, development and effectiveness of chiropractic care. 15.3% Member 32.5% 12.9% Member Subscriptions Subscriptions 13% 35% Seminar Fees Seminar Fees 35% The Foundation operates an endowment grant funding model based on the principle of retaining donated capital and using the investment earnings from that capital to make grants. Donations this year were $227,889. The residual benefit of past donations added to those received this year along with improved investment returns on total invested capital allowed the foundation to issue $112,114 in research grants compared to $52,029 the previous year. The Foundation has a forward obligation to pay approved grants totalling $119,308 which have not yet been fully drawn down. The net profit for the year, after payment of grants, was $95,478. As a result of this profit members’ equity grew to $1,512,437 compared to $1,416,959 in the previous year and this profit adds to the investment base for future research funding. In closing this report I say Thank you to the board and the fantastic staff at head office, for their great contribution to further our cause. And thank you to our CEO Roley Cook, for his tireless effort and great expertise in seeing chiropractic flourish. To all of those that have helped us in moving towards strengthening the chiropractic profession, either as a member, or through the Chiropractic Research Partnership or as a donor, thank you. Thank you for helping us make the progress towards our long-term vision of empowering people to have healthier, happier lives through chiropractic.
