December 2016 Newsletter - Stevens Point Area Public School District

FIRST SEMESTER, 2016-2017
ISSUE #3 - December
A N E W S LE T T E R F O R P A R E N T S
From the Principal
December 2016
Dear SPASH Parents and Families:
I hope that the December issue of our newsletter finds you healthy. We
know that this is often a busy and hectic time of year for families and appreciate you taking the time to read this. We have had a great semester thus
far and I eagerly await the concerts, games, and events that the next couple
of months will bring.
Thank you for participating in our November Parent-Teacher Conferences.
SPASH teachers logged a total of 2,130 parent conferences! Thank you for
giving up some of your time to come to school and meet with us. Please
continue to be as involved as you can with your child’s progress and thank
you for the time, engagement, and support you have already invested.
Please note that next month we will begin our registration process for the
2017-2018 school year. You will receive notifications and information about
this from our counseling office and from your student. Our counselors will
facilitate the registration process and are always available to answer any
questions you or your student may have about academic and career planning.
If you are the parent of a junior, please read the information on page 8 regarding Method Test Prep, a valuable resource for students to use to prepare
for the ACT. All juniors in Wisconsin will take the ACT on February 28
and March 1. Method Test Prep is a resource free to all of our students and
provides everything from practice tests to study resources. We will also be
providing after-school study sessions in January and February to support our
students’ ACT preparation as well. We will communicate more information
about the study sessions after the Winter Break.
We are now more than halfway through our second quarter and the end of
first semester will come very quickly as there will only be three weeks left
in the semester when students return from the Holiday Break. We will communicate with you regarding our final exam schedules for January 18-19 as
we get closer to those dates.
I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy
Holiday season.
Sincerely,
Jon

PRESS RELEASE FOR THE
2017 MUSICAL:
SPASH proudly presents My Fair Lady for its musical this February.
My Fair Lady is an unforgettable theatre experience, transporting audiences back in time to an
astonishingly real Edwardian London populated by a host of colorful characters. The themes of
this spectacular musical are enduring and quintessentially English, and are as relevant today as
they have always been. My Fair Lady is also a celebration of the power of music to tell stories,
illuminate characters and beguile the audience.
The enduring character of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl turned high society debutante,
serves as the pivotal role in a musical which seeks to examine class distinctions, society's
prejudices, the gender divide, identity and transformation. Classic musical numbers “Wouldn't It
Be Loverly?”, “The Rain in Spain”, and “A Hymn to Him” evoke and bring to life these essential
themes and the musical's diverse and absorbing characters.
Musical theatre provides a wonderful opportunity to study the interplay of lyrics, music and
narrative in creating in-depth characters in a dramatic piece of work. And what better musical to
turn to than My Fair Lady, rooted as it is in both a dramatic masterpiece and a great musical
theatre tradition. Lerner and Loewe's creation, based on Bernard Shaw's 1912 play Pygmalion, is
as much a classic play as a classic musical. A profusion of musical styles, characters, drama and
comedy, My Fair Lady connects with audiences in the 21st century just as powerfully as it did in
the mid-20th century.
Please join us for our show opening on February 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at 7:00 p.m. or our Saturday matinee
at 1:00 p.m. on February 4th, 2017, in the SPASH auditorium. Tickets are $12.00 for Adults and
$10.00 for students and senior citizens. Please “like” our Facebook page SPASH Musical, for
more information.

SPASH students enrolled in Introduction to Business, Introduction to Marketing, and Social Media and E-Marketing have been gaining valuable real-world experience
as they prepare for the upcoming Holiday shopping season. Students have been involved in creating advertising
both traditionally and through social media. Students
are also creating and designing new items, promoting
through visual merchandising, and sharpening their customer service skills.
Several students have benefited from the experience
they’ve gained in the store as it has helped them gain the
experience and skills necessary to get hired jobs outside
of SPASH. Not only are they getting jobs now, many
feel the experience is helping them see what skills might
guide their future decisions regarding post-secondary
education and future careers.
As your shopping this year, you can not only get great
SPASH apparel and gifts, you can support the education
of current and future business students as all proceeds
from the store go directly back to the operation of the
school store, scholarships, and resources that benefit
SPASH students.

Paging Students
Paging Students During the Day
This is a notice informing families that we
only page students once in the morning and
once in the afternoon. The times that we page
students over the public address system is
at the end of 3rd hour (10:21a.m.) and at the
end of 7th hour (1:59 p.m.). In the event of
an emergency we would send a note to the
classroom but only on rare occasions as we
do not want to interrupt classroom activities.

Is your student interested in being a global learner and seeing the world? Students who travel can even earn
high school elective credit.
The SPASH Art Department is planning educational travel to ITALY in June of 2018. We will be traveling to Rome
and the Amalfi coast, including tours of the Vatican museum, the Cistine chapel, Pompei and the island of Capri.
Your student will be immersed in the art, history, and culture of Italy.

In June of 2016 SPASH students spent 12 days on a global education
tour of Ireland. The tour began in Dublin where we visited Trinity
College and learned about the Book Of Kells. Highlights of this trip
included the Ring of Kerry, writing limericks while traveling by bus
through the county of Limerick, visiting Cork which was the point
of emigration for most Irish Americans, and then on to Northern
Ireland and the cities of Derry and Belfast. Students had so many
opportunities to learn about the Irish culture, not the least of which
was to learn Irish dance and song.
Cole Anderson Artist Presenter on November 17, 2016
Guest Artist and SPASH alumni, Cole Anderson, visited the SPASH
art department November 17th to present his latest work which
is a comic book series in collaboration with UWSP literature
professor Gerald Williams. Cole is interested in mentoring with
SPASH art students who are interested in assisting in this graphic
series.
SPASH art teachers have been feverishly matting and preparing
artwork for upcoming art exhibits. We hope you can attend one,
some or all exhibits to experience fine art created by our students. Mark your calendars as you want to miss so much talent.

COLLEGE applications?
SCHOLARSHIP applications? JOB applications?
Students who take an online class in high school may
want to mention somewhere on college, scholarship,
and/or job applications that they successfully completed
an online course. That is quite a unique experience!
Being a successful online student demonstrates your
strengths as an independent learner who is organized,
responsible and motivated to master material in a digital
environment. So don't be shy - promote your skills!
The OLC accepts applications all year long. We offer
over 150 different online courses in all core subject areas, many electives, credit recovery and AP (advanced
placement). Some of our more popular course offerings
include: criminology, forensic science, personal finance,
and health. For a complete list of our course offerings
and further information on the OLC, check the OLC

FAFSA Fridays in the Career Center:
One-on-One Financial Aid Assistance
FAFSA Financial Aid Assistance
If your son or daughter is a senior and has not yet
completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), now is the time to do so. The
Federal Government recently changed the timeline
for this process, and the FAFSA officially opened
online on October 1, 2016. All students planning
to attend a four-year university,
a two-year college, or a technical college should complete this
form. It is required by the Federal
Government, and most colleges,
to receive any type of need-based
financial assistance. Each student only needs to submit one FAFSA, regardless of how many schools
are being considered. The SPASH Career Center is
once again offering one-on-one assistance in completing the FAFSA. Parents and students can sign
up for 30 minute, private, confidential appointments to work on the FAFSA in the Career Center.
Dates available are December 9th, January 13th &
27th, and February 10th. Sign up online by visiting the SPASH website. Click on “SPASH Career
Center,” then “FAFSA Fridays,” and follow the instructions on the screen. If you prefer to sign up in
person, call (715-345-5468) or stop by the Career
Center between 7:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.

ATTENTION JUNIORS PLANNING ON ATTENDING COLLEGE:
SIGN UP FOR THE ACT NOW!
ACT Sign-up
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is entering into a partnership with ACT®, Inc. to comprehensively
assess Wisconsin high school students.
•10th grade students will take the ACT Aspire™ Early High School assessment in Spring (April 26th and 27th).
•11th grade students will take The ACT® Plus Writing and The ACT® WorkKeys® Assessment System on
February 28th and March 1st (no need to register - test is free).
ACT Aspire™ Early High School - ACT Aspire assesses student readiness in English, math, reading, science, and
writing. ACT Aspire is an online assessment in Wisconsin except for students who require accommodations through
Braille, Large Print or American Sign Language who will take ACT Aspire in a paper and pencil format.
The ACT® Plus Writing - The ACT Plus Writing consists of four multiple-choice tests: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science; and a 40-minute essay test that measures writing skills. ACT Plus Writing will be a paper and pencil
test in Wisconsin for the 2017 administration. Test scores are college reportable.
ACT® WorkKeys® - ACT WorkKeys is an applied skills assessment system that helps
students compare their skills to the skills real jobs require. Wisconsin students will take
three WorkKeys assessments: Locating Information, Reading for Information, and Applied Mathematics. ACT WorkKeys will be a paper and pencil test in Wisconsin for the
2017 administration.
All students will be administered these assessments except for the 1% of students with
significant cognitive disabilities who will be assessed with an alternate assessment.
ACT®, Inc. has provided testing services for more than 50 years and their assessments
have evolved over the years to reflect the nation's view of education to embrace lifelong
learning and prepare students to be college and career ready after high school graduation.
ACT and DPI work together to ensure that ACT assessments measure what students have
learned through our Common Core State Standards. For more information go to
http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/ACT.
Practice tests and sample test questions are available from ACT on this site listed under sample items. Actual test
items are not released.
Students wishing to register for additional ACT tests can do so, for a fee, by
going on line at

Scholarships
SCHOLARSHIPS
It’s that time of year again. Scholarship
applications for seniors are available on
the SPASH Counseling Office website.
Students need to be aware of deadlines
and requirements. Local scholarship
applications for the Community Foundation are due on Feb 15th. Qualifications
are different for each scholarship. Have
your child go to the Counseling Office
if they have any questions or visit the
Counseling Office site under "Scholarships." Scholarships are available for all
students with a wide variety of academic
and co-curricular achievements. We
encourage all students to apply, "toot
your horn" and submit the best product/
application possible.
Financial Aid Season in Full Swing
With the recent changes implemented by the Federal
Government, the financial aid season kicked off on October 1. That is the first day that seniors were able to
work on/submit their Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA).
Financial Aid
All students planning to
attend any type of postsecondary education
(two-year, four-year,
public or private, trade
schools, etc.) should
complete the FAFSA. At some schools, students will not
even be considered for scholarships until they complete
the FAFSA.
Students can receive federal financial aid in the form
of grants, loans, or work-study. This aid is intended to
cover expenses such as tuition, room and board, books,
other supplies and transportation. Financial aid is based
on need. Grants do not have to be repaid. Loans are
money you borrow and must repay. Work-study provides
jobs, usually on campus, so students can help pay for
education expenses.
To find out more about federal financial aid programs,
go to studentaid.ed.gov/guide. You can request a free
paper copy by contacting the U.S. Department of Education at 1-877-433-7827. The guide is available in both
English and Spanish.
FAFSA
If you're planning to attend college in the fall and haven't
yet filed the FAFSA, you should do so ASAP. If you
need assistance in completing the FAFSA, please utilize
FAFSA Friday support available in the Carer Center.
Workshop dates are posted on the Career Center website
under "FAFSA Fridays." You can sign-up online for an
appointment or call (715)345-5468 to schedule.
Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov
Finally, make sure you check financial aid deadlines!
Because of the earlier filing date, some schools have
moved up their priority deadlines. The priority deadlines
for UW System schools can be found at
www.uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/finaiddates/

Snow Day - Update
2016-17 "SNOW DAY" UPDATE
During the winter, we often get weather that makes driving treacherous, and on some days, it becomes necessary to cancel school for safety reasons. In order for parents to have time to make alternative arrangements
for their children, the district makes the decision to call a "snow day" as early as possible, usually by 5:30 a.m.
It is possible that after students have started classes on a given day, late developing weather conditions would
require us to close school early. However, that is done only under extreme, unusually severe conditions.
Early dismissal creates additional problems for parents and has the potential of increasing risks for students.
Because closing school early might become unavoidable, parents do need to make advance arrangements for
their children if no one will be home to receive them if school is dismissed early. It is important that parents
arrange with relatives or neighbors on the same bus route to be prepared to accept the students.
If school is cancelled or is closed early, the district notifies parents by radio and television announcements.
The following stations are used for that communication.

English Lab
ENGLISH LAB
Because English touches every subject and
four (4) credits are required to graduate, the
English department wants to make sure each
student has access to extra help. Each day,
the English Department will have lab times
available during the
school day. If your
student needs help
with an English assignment,
please
encourage him or
her to make use of these opportunities.

Please consider supporting
a great cause that gets books
in the hands of kids.
Books From the Heart provide books to primary students in Stevens Point on Valentine's
Day. So, if you’re looking for something
to do this winter that is “off the chart,”
consider donating time, money or books to
Books From the Heart. Donations accepted
January 1, 2017 – February 1, 2017.
Between January 10th and February 10th
local bookstores (The Book Look and Book
World) are offering 20% off books suitable for donation to this age group. Each
bookstore has book plates which may be
personalized by the donor, and placed inside
the book. These local stores will hold the
books for our distribution in all area schools.

Talk it Out: Communication with friends, parents, a teach or counselor can help sort
out daily stressors
• Keep a Manageable Schedule: Too many commitments and extracurricular activities
can add to stress. Keep a schedule of the most enjoyable extracurricular that do not
cause extra stress
Managing stress in everyday life can help improve overall health. It will help students be successful in classes and prepare for the future after graduation.

25th Annual Portage County Cultural Festival
Saturday, May 6, 2017
Volunteers Needed
The Portage County Cultural Festival is an exciting
educational day dedicated to celebrating the ethnic
richness that we enjoy in Portage County. Last
year, more than 15,000 festival-goers gathered at
Stevens Point Area Senior High to enjoy the sights,
sounds and aromas of the ethnic food, exhibits,
entertainment and children’s activities. Volunteering with this event brings new appreciation to the
amazing transformation of the high school grounds
to a world of cultures and people-right in our own
backyard!
PORTAGE COUNTY
The planning committee invites you to personally volunteer or to arrange for an organization
