BBC News School Twickenham report

TWICKENHAM 2017
The Warwick School 1XV were victorious this Wednesday at Twickenham Stadium the
home of rugby, with an incredible 27-5 victory over Bishop Wordsworth’s school. Their
last appearance for the 1st team at Twickenham was in 2013 which saw them get
dominated by a strong and well organised Dulwich side. That day the Under 15’s were
victorious and in the next 4 years they faced up to the occasion and got the result they
were longing for.
It was the first time Bishop Wordsworth’s had come to Twickenham so Warwick had the
advantage due to their success 4 years ago. It was a very physical start as Warwick made
some big hits. Warwick took a 5-0 lead after an incredible turn over in the 22 which
caused Tom Fawcett to finish it well. Warwick were dominant as they enforced mistakes
to the opposition and they were solid as a brick in defence.
After a lineout outside the
22, 13 boys joined the maul
and drove forward. Bishop’s
collapsed the maul which
forced the referee to blow
for a penalty try.
On the 22nd minute mark
Nick Rigby made a very
clinical and powerful run
which caused the hooker
Kyriakos Grammatopoulos
to finish. Relentless was the
only way to emphasise the 1st half.
As the 1st half progressed Warwick were dominant and they weren’t letting any chance
slip. However, Bishop scored an aggressive try with strength to make the score 22-5
going into the break.
It was a quieter second half as Warwick were
tiring but they maintained their solid defence.
Nick David broke away and used his feet and
finished it well. Nick David and Oliver
Thornyworck performed well and stood out
but Tom Fawcett took the glory and won the
man of the match. The full time whistle blew
and the celebrations were high as the Blue and
White army were NatWest Cup champions.
Mark Nasey the head coach said he had ‘strange emotions but he is very proud’ and he
described the match as an ‘arm wrestle’ Nick David said he was really ‘chuffed’ and the
team were ‘focused on doing the job.’
The U15 Side started the game with good discipline and they made a lively start. The
first 6 minutes were tough but Wellington broke through and scored to make it 7-0.
However, Warwick didn’t slip and they scored a ‘very clever’ try as the forwards tricked
the defence which caused the captain Jack Forsythe to seep through. It was a ‘very
absorbing’ first half as it ended level.
As the second half progressed Wellington scored two impressive tries and made the
score 17-7. Without giving up the Finlay Smithy chipped the ball up and Ethan Evans
cook finished it well in the corner to make it 12-17.
However, Wellington broke
through the defence and scored
another try and a penalty to
finish the match. For the
Warwick side Jack Forsythe
stood out well with his clever
rugby and impressive try. At full
time the score was 12-25 to
Wellington. The boys may be
disappointed but they should
leave with their heads held up
high and they should be very
proud of themselves.
It was an emotional day for Mark Nasey as it was his last game at Twickenham and as a
Warwick Coach. It was a wonderful way to say farewell to see his 1XV team victorious at
the home of England Rugby. He has been at Warwick for 13 years starting in September
2004 as the director of Rugby. His most memorable moment was winning the England
Schools Daily Mail Cup in 2007. He has been an excellent 1XV team coach and he will be
missed in the School community.
