In the central character of Nora, Ibsen epitomized the human struggle against the humiliating constraints of social conformity. A Doll's House shows as well his gifts for creating realistic dialogue, a suspenseful flow of events and, above all, psychologically penetrating characterizations that make the struggles of his dramatic personages utterly convincing.” ROLES ALL PLAYING AGES LISTED BELOW ARE IDE AL CHARACTER AGES. THEY ARE FLEXIBLE AND NEED NOT BE THE ACTUAL AGE OF THE PERFORMER Nora Helmer (playing age 25-35) – a very substantial, but rewarding role for any actress. Nora is flighty and skittish but gradually grows in strength and character as the play progresses to make very significant and radical decisions about her life. Torvald Helmer (playing age 30-45) – Nora’s husband. A bank manager with a very traditional view of his wife and marriage. Successful, oppressive, controlling, patronizing, but far from a caricature. Kristine Linde (playing age 25-40) – Nora’s school friend. A widow who returns to town to find work and becomes a trusted confidante. Sensible, clear thinking and the catalyst for Nora’s radical actions. Dr Rank (playing age 30-50) – an old family friend to the Helmers and an ever-present visitor to their home. He is secretly in love with Nora, but with an aggressive illness, time is running out for him to make his feelings clear. Krogstad (playing age 30-50) – a man with a sketchy past, but desperate to re-establish himself as credible and respectable. So desperate, he is prepared to blackmail Nora. Anne-Marie (playing age 50+) – the Helmers’ nanny. A smaller role in terms of dialogue, Anne-Marie gave up her own daughter to care for Nora as a child and is now nanny to Nora’s three children. Helene (playing age – 20+) the Helmers’ maid. Small role in terms of dialogue. Porter (playing age – 50+) Two children (playing age – 5 – 10) the Helmer’s two children KEY DATES Rehearsal Starts: mid-January, 2016 Performance Dates: April 21st – May 8th, 2016 One Festival Performance – mid May, 2016 NOTE FROM DIRECTOR: I prefer a two stage audition. In the first part we do various exercises, tell stories, etc. I get most of my impulse to cast actors from this session. The second part is short readings from the script. It’s best if you can attend the audition from the start to the end, but if that isn’t possible coming to the first part is best for me. However, no-one is excluded from consideration because they can only attend one of the sessions. CONTACT: If these dates are impossible for you, contact the director to see if another date can be arranged. Director: Gordon May - [email protected] Producer: Sue Murguly – [email protected]
