Turbo Talk Vauxhall Elementary School Newsletter June 8, 2013 Retirement After 34 years of teaching at VES Mr. Dunn is retiring. Over his time of teaching in Vauxhall he has been such an inspiration to many, many students and he will truly be missed. Just think of the large number of children he has taught over the years with many of his students still living and working in the Vauxhall area and sending their kids to his class. Remarkable! Besides Mr. Dunn’s great teaching and high academic standards, his humorous side will be missed. His fun loving way of teasing his students with a sheepish grin on his face, his ties and his hilarious songs his students have performed at concerts and assemblies are only a few snippets of a legacy he will leave behind. A come and go social evening is planned for June 14 from 7:00 – 9:00. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate on our original or our back up track meet day. On the second rainout we did manage to get the 3-6 high jumping completed and the sprint finals done. Rather than cancel the track meet altogether we are planning a mini track meet day on Monday, June 24. The plan will be to run the uncompleted individual events in the morning and some team events in the afternoon. Unfortunately kindergarten are finished and the 1-6 MLP will be on their field trip but it is the only open day available that does not conflict with tests or other field trips. Further details will be coming home to parents. Triathlon 17 VES students took part in the recent Grade 4/5 Triathlon held in Taber. Eric Vanden Dungen, Wyatt Broderson, Jace Hughes, Blake Kondor, Brittney Kambietz, Samantha Delanoy, Ashlyn Mack, Chelsey Mills, Jessica Rae Brummelhuis, Lammert Wildeboer, Christy Hammersley, Trinity Wiebe, Jackson Wetherelt, Savanna Van Der Wielen, Kailee Dueck, Spencer Banman and Jessie Ferguson under the guidance of Coach Tammy Reiling, swam, biked and ran their way to an excellent sports experience. No awards are given for this event as it is just to expose students to another type of athletic activity to maintain healthy bodies. 5/6 Musical Wins Academy Awards The recent grade five and six musical “It’s Saturday” was such a hit that it deserved an Oscar. Under the directing of Mrs. Plotzki the play took a humorous look at all of the plans children have for a Saturday. The seven act musical had some great comedy moments from David, played by Kyle Wiebe, not wanting to take piano lessons to the “off the wall, crazy boogie woogie” piano teacher played by Eric Vanden Dungen. Songs such as “Time to Spare, “My Mother the Coach” and “Chores” were well received with rousing applause from the audience. Well done everyone. Miss Lindsy Cummings will be transferring to our school after teaching for seven years at Hays school. She will be teaching either grade 2 or grade 3. Mrs. Lindsey Brouwers will be returning after being on leave for a year and will be teaching in a variety of primary classrooms. Cody Van Dyk reached his relay for Life Goal of earning over $100.00. As a result he dyed his hair yellow and blue. We are proud of you Cody. High Fives to Lorry Vanden Dungen and all of the parents who pitched in to help serve the food from the cancelled track meet. It wasn’t easy after several days of delays but the food got eaten, bellies were full and everyone came out a winner. Many of our students were involved in the 4-H show and sale at the start of the month. Cattle and Sheep were the animals of the day. Trey Broderson had his calf “Curly” trained so well that he could ride it around the ring. The grade 6’s had a great trip to Edmonton. The Water Park, Legislature and a two hour bus breakdown were highlights of the trip. They represented our school so well on the trip. I am very proud of them. The kindergarten field trip to the Taber Police station could be deemed a success because no one was arrested. Way to go Kindergarten. Special thanks to our School Council for being so supportive of VES throughout the year. Executive members under the leadership of Chairperson Kim Cawley were Barb Van Dyk, Vanessa van der Wielen, Shelly Deleeuw, Tammy Reiling and Melissa Dueck. Members at large were Lori Delanoy, Lorry Vanden Dungen and Sarah Stamp. High fives also go out to our head chef for hot lunches – Angie Klemen. Her assistant chef Debbie Brummelhuis and other volunteers fed the troops of students each month. Thank you volunteers. Inspire Us and We Will Inspire Others
