Uffculme School Newsletter

Uffculme School Newsletter
OCTOBER 2015
Headteacher’s Introduction
The early school year is traditionally a time for fresh starts and new beginnings
and whilst the vast majority of our students do not need to commit to doing any
more than they already do, it’s been fantastic to see everyone’s renewed
enthusiasm to embrace education and make the most of all the opportunities
which Uffculme offers. This has been evident in the record number of young
people attending sporting clubs, showing their willingness to represent the school
on the playing fields as well as all those signing up for surfing, chess, film club,
stage and screen, DofE, the Three Moors Challenge, the outdoor adventure
programme and numerous other activities. I popped into one of the early Lion
King rehearsals last week and was blown away (and a little bit emotional) at the
quality of performances which are already emerging. If we thought Les Mis was
good, this looks like it will be truly exceptional – no pressure there anyone!
I was delighted when our stage and screen choir were invited to perform at a
prestigious conference at the beginning of the term and they were truly superb. I
received many compliments on their behalf – not just from the delegates in the
room but those who were dialling in from all over the world.
Year 11 have been exemplary in and around the school and fully meet the
expectations we have of them as the senior students and role models to the
younger years. Our Year 7 have also been very welcome additions to the Uffculme
community. Schools should be happy places and it is evident that this strong sense
of belonging and well being permeates all year groups at Uffculme.
I wanted finally to let you know what I am up to this term. I have been asked to
help out at a school in Taunton which is currently in need of some additional
leadership capacity. This means that I am only in Uffculme for a day and a half a
week at the moment. This is a temporary arrangement until Christmas but it does
mean that unfortunately I am missing out on playing a full part in the life of the
school. Mr Blackburn is in charge on the days when I am not in school and he is
keeping me fully briefed and informed of everything that is happening. I am also
of course still very happy to be contacted by any parents or carers about issues you
feel I could help with and will do all I can to continue to make time for this. I shall
be at all major school events that I am able to attend and back in school full time
in January looking forward to catching up.
The next two newsletters will therefore be introduced by Mr Blackburn
I wish everyone a productive, busy and happy term and look forward to seeing you
after Christmas.

Business Studies
Uffculme’s Business Studies department recently took three
groups of students to Petroc College to compete in the
inaugural ‘Mid Devon Interschool Enterprise Challenge’ cup.
Previously staff from Petroc College, along with a handful of
their Business Studies students called "Business Angels", came
into Uffculme to launch the challenge with all Yr10 Business
Studies students. In groups they were asked to work
together to create and design a brand new app. At the end of
the sessions all groups presented their ideas and three groups
were chosen to represent Uffculme at the finals day. At this
event students presented in front of their peers and a panel of
judges from two local businesses: Heathcoat Fabrics and
Oxygen. After much deliberation the judges chose the winning
app to be that of 'My Chef' where you can input the ingredients
in your fridge and the app will create a meal for you. The
winning team members were Alexandra Mobbs (11Moxey),
Louisa Mckenzie (11Bretherton), Ryan Moon (11Robinson),
Patrick Parish (11Radford), Matthew Disney (11Dunnett) and
Robert Dalzell (11Dunnett) – well done team!
Finally, a special mention should also go to Joe Fishwick
(11Moxey) who ended up presenting on his own in front of the
whole audience and the judges. Overall he secured second place
so great job Joe!
A big congratulations to all who took part for representing the
school with your professional approach.
Uffculme School Equestrian Team
Perfect weather ensured
perfect conditions for team
Uffculme in the Blundell's One
Day Event, which took place at
Bicton Arena last weekend.
Teams from Colyton Grammar
School, Queen’s College and
Blundell's gave a good
performance but were not quite
strong enough to beat Uffculme who were victorious with 95.7
points. Riders Henry Clist, Ellie Ridout, Georgie Conneeley and
Alex Mobbs were ecstatic with the win. Henry came first
individually in his section with a Best Dressage score of
14.2. Georgie came a very close second as an individual in her
section. Really well done all!

Three Moors Walking
We had over 60 students from Year 9 who completed an arduous walk between
Dunster and Exford, going over Dunkery Beacon. This had well over 500metres of
total ascent within the 11 miles, a tough day out for beginner walkers on a really
warm day. Views all along were magnificent. The students were also able to
undertake some training in emergency procedures on the route and were given the
opportunity to build up and improve their basic map reading skills and compass
work along the way. All students and staff completed the walk, had a good time
and are looking forward to the next walk in early November across Bodmin Moor;
they are already praying for the same weather. Students are completing walks
across the highest points of Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor to gain their
bronze Three Moors badge.
Ballet
Congratulations to Madelaine Perkins, 7Harbour, who has been accepted into
the Wales and West Cecchetti Ballet Associates Training Programme at Ballet
Cymru in Newport. This programme is for gifted, young ballerinas and
commands a lot of discipline and commitment. Madelaine will have to attend
a monthly training class, in Newport, to honour her place in the programme.
Well done Madelaine, please keep us posted with your progress.

Mont Blanc Summer Expedition 2016
Information Evening - December 1st 2015
6.30pm, Uffculme School Dining Hall
The Tour Du Mont Blanc is one of the classic mountain walks of the
world. This trek circumnavigates the highest mountain in Western
Europe.
Starting and finishing in the Chamonix Valley and taking in some of
the most spectacular alpine scenery through France, Italy and
Switzerland, this 170km wilderness walk is set to make the heart soar
and the adrenaline rush. Views en-route are spectacular, trails are
well defined and easy to follow. The satisfaction of completing one of
the world’s great walks provides the finishing touch to a wonderful
holiday.
All levels are welcome but experience of walking in mountain
countryside should be considered, if not, at least a good level of
walking fitness is required.
Planning and preparation is done for you so you can just enjoy your
holiday.

An Evening with Michael Morpurgo
Charlie Berry, 8McGuire, was delighted to meet the author of War
Horse, Michael Morpurgo, at the Beehive, Honiton, recently. Michael
was there as Patron to support Villages in Action and gave an exciting
and interesting evening’s entertainment to all, young and old. An
abundance of stories, amusing, touching, surprising, informative,
personal and educational, were told of the people and places Michael
has known in almost 40 years of living in Devon. He also answered
questions from the audience and gave credit to his wife who
encouraged him to write after telling him ‘You’re a good liar, you
can surely write a good story!’ Charlie was honoured to have a
chat with Michael, who happily signed some books and posed for
a photo with him. Sounds like a great evening was had by all.

The principle purpose of the Uffculme School Trust is to advance the education of and for the
benefit of the pupils of Uffculme School. To this end it will provide support for activities or
equipment or building works that cannot be obtained through public funds.
The Uffculme School Trust has been able to offer so much thanks to the generous donations
made by many members from within and close to our school community.
The Trust is keen to maintain and develop its work in the future to benefit as many pupils as
possible.
In recent years the Uffculme School Trust has financed:
Accessible drinking fountains around the school and support to enable pupils from all
backgrounds to participate in enrichment activities such as music lessons, extra-curricular
activities and Activities Week.

Fundraising Karate Kid
After receiving some sad news about a close member of her
family, Emma Bennison, 8Sercombe, really wanted to do
something positive to raise awareness of cancer. To this end,
she was all set to shave her hair off, as many do, in support, but
fortunately (her Mum’s words) an opportunity came up at her
martial arts class to ‘Kick Cancer’s Butt’. The club devised a
special ‘Pink’ belt grading and Emma tackled it with great
enthusiasm. After 3 strenuous hours Emma passed the grading
and in doing so has raised £171 for Cancer Research. Her
friends and family are all very proud of her as is the school. Well
done Emma.
Cricket - Not Out!!
Just before the Summer break Uffculme Under 15’s Cricket
team won the East Devon School’s cricket final, played locally
at Tiverton Heathcoat Cricket Club. En-route to the final they
beat both Kings School and Exmouth Community College
meaning they would face tough opposition from Sidmouth
College in the final.
Uffculme started off the winning streak by winning the toss and
opted to put Sidmouth into bat first. Very tight bowling from
Arthur Burns-Cox, Ned Travers and Ben Sapiecha kept
Sidmouth’s total to 110 runs after 20 overs. Now it was
Uffculme’s turn to put ball to willow with Rory Tatterton and
Ben Sapiecha leading the way. In glorious early evening sun
light they both retired on an excellent 42 not out leaving Kieran
Budgell to hit the final runs for a victory by 8 wickets.
It was a fantastic achievement by all of the team, especially as a
lot of the younger boys contributed to the victory. Well done
all!
Team: Josh Farley (Yr 7), Rob Burridge (Yr ), Arthur Burns- Cox, Ben Sapiecha, Corey Bale (Yr9),
Kieran Budgell, Rory Tatterton, Aaron Marks, Ned
Travers, Will Tobin & Joe Hurley (Yr10)
