JANUARY 2017 THE CAIRN TERRIER The Cairn Terrier got its name from man-made piles of stones known as cairns. Cairns are large stone monuments made from small stones piled on top of each other, and the cairn terrier was bred to hunt rats that made their homes inside. They would burrow into these piles of stone and hold onto rats and other vermin until the farmer got there to make the kill. Cairn terriers come in a variety of colors and have a double coat for protection. This breed is very active, loyal, and tough. They have strong digging and chasing instincts and a good fence is a must. Most cairns should not be taken out without a leash as most find it impossible not to chase anything that moves. This is a wonderful dog for which training is an absolute must. FUN TRIVIA *The dachshund, or wiener dog, was bred to flush out burrow-dwelling animals. Dachshunds are perfectly shaped to flush out burrow-dwelling animals such as rabbits and badgers. PET JOKES A man is driving his car along a lonely country road when suddenly it grinds to a halt. The driver tries to restart it but to no avail. So he gets out and opens the hood and starts fiddling with the plugs. Suddenly he hears a voice. "The left hand carburetor is blocked, why don't you drain it and the muck should come out". He turns round and can see no one, so he shrugs and goes back to what he was doing. "Drain the muck out of the left hand carburetor", says the voice again, and when he turns round all he can see is a black horse with its head over the hedge looking at him. Again the voice tells him what to do and he suddenly realizes that the horse is giving him instructions. Too shocked to argue, he does as he’s told, starts the car and sure enough it works. He drives down to the nearest pub and, rushing in like a madman, has a stiff drink. Then he says to the barman, "My car broke down up there and a horse told me how to repair it". The barman looks at him and says, "Was it a black one?" "Yes." replied the man, "I thought so, because the white one knows nothing about cars." QUIZ 1. The proverbial expression 'Curiosity killed the Cat' A MAN & HIS DOG Everyone knows that, despite its supposed nine lives, curiosity killed the cat. Well, not quite. The 'killed the cat' proverb originated as 'care killed the cat'. By 'care' the coiner of the expression meant 'worry/sorrow' rather than our more usual contemporary 'look after/provide for' meaning. A man may smile and bid you hail Yet wish you to the devil, But when a good dog wags his tail, You know he's on the level. (Author unknown) That form of the expression was first recorded in the English playwright Ben Jonson's play Every Man in His Humour of 1598. A Dog’s New Year Resolutions Did you know . . . . . . . !
