HAPPY NEW YEAR
Did you know . . . . . . ,
The first dog chapel was established in 2001.
It was built in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, by Stephan
Huneck, a children’s book author whose five dogs
helped him recuperate from a serious illness.
Did you know . . . . . . ,
Way back when, Burmese cats were reputed to
have had their own servants. Once owned by
Burmese aristocracy and priests, the Burmese cats
were so highly valued that it was illegal to sell
them.

THE CAIRN TERRIER
The Cairn Terrier got its name from man-made piles of stones known as cairns.
Cairns are large stone monuments made from small stones piled on top of each other,
and the cairn terrier was bred to hunt rats that made their homes inside. They would
burrow into these piles of stone and hold onto rats and other vermin until the farmer
got there to make the kill. Cairn terriers come in a variety of colors and have a double
coat for protection. This breed is very active, loyal, and tough. They have strong digging
and chasing instincts and a good fence is a must. Most cairns should not be taken out
without a leash as most find it impossible not to chase anything that moves. This is a
wonderful dog for which training is an absolute must.
FUN TRIVIA
*The dachshund, or wiener dog, was bred to flush out burrow-dwelling animals.
Dachshunds are perfectly shaped to flush out burrow-dwelling animals such as rabbits and
badgers. "Dachs" means "badger" in German.
*Cat "kneading" behavior is left over from kittenhood when they kneaded their mother's
belly for milk. The marching or kneading means that the cat is happy.
*Rabbit fanciers began breeding rabbits for show. The first rabbit show in England was in
the middle 1820’s displaying Lop eared and Dutch rabbits. By mid-1870s, Himalayan,
Angora, and Silvers were included in the shows. The 1800’s also saw the creation of the
very first rabbit fanciers clubs.
*Manu National Park in Peru has 1300 different species of butterflies.
*The technical term for a cat's hairball is a Bezoar. Brushing your cat can help prevent
hairballs.
*Those beautiful peacocks, distinguished by their crested head, brilliant plumage, and long
spotted back feathers, are always males.
PET JOKES
A man is driving his car along a lonely country road when suddenly it grinds to a halt. The driver tries to
restart it but to no avail. So he gets out and opens the hood and starts fiddling with the plugs. Suddenly
he hears a voice. "The left hand carburetor is blocked, why don't you drain it and the muck should
come out". He turns round and can see no one, so he shrugs and goes back to what he was doing.
"Drain the muck out of the left hand carburetor", says the voice again, and when he turns round all he
can see is a black horse with its head over the hedge looking at him. Again the voice tells him what to
do and he suddenly realizes that the horse is giving him instructions. Too shocked to argue, he does as
he’s told, starts the car and sure enough it works. He drives down to the nearest pub and, rushing in
like a madman, has a stiff drink. Then he says to the barman, "My car broke down up there and a horse
told me how to repair it".
The barman looks at him and says, "Was it a black one?"
"Yes." replied the man,
"I thought so, because the white one knows nothing about cars."

PAW-SCOPES
DOGS:
Aquarian dogs display strong and attractive personalities that fall into two types:
one shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the
other exuberant, lively and exhibitionist,
sometimes hiding the depths of their
character under a cloak of playfulness and
antics.
CATS:
The Aquarius Cat needs a large extended
family in order to satisfy social needs, but
an owner should be prepared for this
feline to organize gatherings. Luckily, there
are peaceful times since the Aquarius cat
does enjoy paying visits to others in their
own surroundings - just as much as he or
she delights in running an open house!

*A horse can see better at night than a
human. However, it takes a horse's eyes
longer to adjust from light to dark and
from dark to light than a human's.
*Horses are not color blind. They have
what researchers call "dichromatic"
vision, or "two-color" vision. Research
indicates horses can perceive blue and
green tones, and color variations based
on them. However, they have difficulty
with other colors, including reds.

Some airlines ban French
Bulldogs because they have
breathing problems.
Frenchie’s have an inherited
airway disease that makes
them unable to effectively
regulate their body

they get stressed out and
overheated.

Did you know . . . . . . . !
A tortoiseshell cat is one whose fur is a mottled black
and orange color. A calico cat is black and orange
with patches of white. The odd fact about both these
types of cat is that they are almost always female.
Male calico and tortoise shell cats are very rare. Only
one in every three thousand calico cats who lives
past kittenhood is a male.
The proverbial expression 'Curiosity killed the Cat'
A MAN & HIS DOG
Everyone knows that, despite its supposed nine lives, curiosity killed
the cat. Well, not quite. The 'killed the cat' proverb originated as
'care killed the cat'. By 'care' the coiner of the expression meant
'worry/sorrow' rather than our more usual contemporary 'look
after/provide for' meaning.
A man may smile and bid you hail
Yet wish you to the devil,
But when a good dog wags his tail,
You know he's on the level.
(Author unknown)
That form of the expression was first recorded in the English playwright Ben Jonson's play Every Man in His Humour of 1598.

Did you know . . . . . . . !
There are many crazy horse laws, including one in Bluff, Utah, where an
unmarried woman could be jailed for riding a horse on Sundays. And in
several cities throughout the United States, newly married men were not
allowed to ride alone, unless he had been married longer than 12 months.
