Record breaking,
Headline Making
ecord-breaking, headline-making describe 2011 at the Saint Louis
Zoo. Once again, ranked first, America’s #1 Zoo* proved to be a
front-runner in conservation, research and education. From breeding
Ozark hellbenders in captivity for the first time in history to establishing
the Institute for Conservation Medicine, the Zoo achieved many
“firsts” in 2011. And news of these accomplishments traveled across continents
reaching nearly 33 million people via print, broadcast and web news and social
media sources.
Of course, experiencing the Zoo firsthand topped the list for tourists and St. Louis
residents alike. For the fourth time in Zoo history, annual attendance reached
over three million. When U.S. Bank Wild Lights transformed the night sky,
a record-breaking 53,380 visitors enjoyed this spectacular event.
Winter brings another Zoo tradition: Raja’s birthday. The first Asian elephant
born at the Zoo, 19-year-old Raja, made headlines in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
and on Fox-2, NewsChannel 5 and KMOV-TV on his special day. More than 70,000
Facebook fans wished this large darling a happy one, and over 5,000 visited the
Zoo that day.
Another celebrity event shined a spotlight on the Zoo. Actor Kevin James, star of
the box office movie Zookeeper, paid a red-carpet visit in June to premiere the
movie. Accompanied by an alpaca and eagle, James signed autographs for
a delighted crowd at the free event.
Whether hosting a celebrity or harvesting eggs, the Zoo achieved many milestones
during this “year of firsts” thanks to the Zoo community, which exemplifies an
innovative spirit of discovery, passionate commitment to mission and technical
expertise in the field of animal science.

Slippery Success
n October 18, 2011, Herpetarium zookeepers found a surprise
that would cause a big sensation at the WildCare Institute Ron
Goellner Center for Hellbender Conservation. Zoo staff discovered a
long-awaited clutch of fertilized Ozark hellbender eggs—165 of the
world’s first fertile Ozark hellbender eggs produced in captivity.
The discovery occurred just two weeks after the hellbender was classified as a
federally endangered species. Through its WildCare Institute, the Zoo focuses on
wildlife management and recovery, conservation science, and support of human
populations in conservation hotspots around the world.
News of the successful breeding was officially announced on November 30 and
captured headlines on 232 websites and 36 media outlets, including the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch, Washington Post, National Geographic, Scientific American and
National Public Radio.

It was a victory 10 years in the making. The Zoo collaborated with the Missouri
Department of Conservation, Arkansas Fish & Game and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service. Simulated freshwater streams included specially designed nesting sites
and a good gender ratio for optimal breeding. Beginning in 2007, females laid
eggs, but they were never fertilized. Zookeepers were determined not to lose
North America’s largest salamander. Subtle tweaking of the water chemistry
made all the difference.
The Zoo’s hellbender population was raised to 437, and zookeepers were soon
busy rocking the eggs. In the wild, male hellbenders rock fertilized eggs to
increase oxygen intake, but in order to protect this precious set, zookeepers put
in the hours with the little ones.
The Ozark Hellbender Working Group was charged with developing a plan for
releasing the young into the wild after six or seven years. The remarkable efforts
managing this native of the Ozark Highland rivers help distinguish the Zoo as an
extraordinary leader in conserving the Ozark hellbender.
Hellbenders can grow up to two
feet long and live beyond 30 years.
The species has experienced little
change over the millions of years it
has existed. Development, pollutants,
disease and poaching have led to an
80 to 90 percent population decline.
It is estimated that fewer than 600
live in the wild.

Bundles of Joy
t’s a girl! It’s a boy! It’s 459 bundles of joy! In 2011, the Saint Louis Zoo
celebrated the birth of 191 amphibians, 77 reptiles, 134 birds and
57 mammals. The births were the successful result of the Zoo’s conscientious
efforts to conserve endangered and threatened species around the world.
Among the new arrivals were a Matschie’s tree kangaroo, Grevy’s zebra,
addax, cotton-top tamarin, colobus monkey and mountain bongo, plus Speke’s
gazelles. Hyacinth macaw chicks represented the first hatching for the species
in Zoo history.
On January 14, the Zoo welcomed Ruka, the first black rhinoceros calf born at
the Zoo in 20 years. Weighing 120 pounds, Ruka was born to first-time parents
Kati Rain and Ajabu. The black rhino is critically endangered in Africa.
The summer brought two more noteworthy birthdays. Kenzi was born on
June 24 to Rani and Raja. Raja was the first Asian elephant born at the Zoo.
A third-generation Asian elephant born at the Zoo, Kenzi weighed approximately
300 pounds. With only 35,000 to 50,000 left in the wild, Asian elephants are
facing extinction.
Lions are facing critical decline as well. With fewer than 25,000 surviving in
Africa, they are listed as vulnerable by the Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species. On July 17, the Zoo celebrated its first lion cub birth
since 1976, the year Big Cat Country opened.
The Zoo also helped 100 institutions manage contraception for 154 species
and 429 animals through efforts at the AZA Wildlife Contraception Center at
the Zoo. Teams of experts working on campus and in collaboration with wildlife
organizations worldwide have distinguished the Saint Louis Zoo as a national
and international leader in animal conservation.

Animal Attractions
here is no mistaking the wide-eyed wonder of visitors when they
encounter the amazing wildlife for the first time at the Saint Louis Zoo.
Eager to discover what creatures are swimming, crawling and flying
about, nearly 400,000 visitors enjoyed the benefit of free admission
to special attractions during the first hour of operation in 2011.
With the introduction of sharks, Stingrays at Caribbean Cove was a popular site.
Bonnethead and brown-banded bamboo sharks swam fin to flap with cownose
rays, southern stingrays and horseshoe crabs. Some spirited visitors dressed
as these mild-mannered creatures during Shark Week at the Zoo. Another family
favorite, the Emerson Children’s Zoo captured the delight of many as they
enjoyed petting the snakes and owls or sliding down the transparent chute
through the otter pool.
To help bring animals and people closer, the Zoo provided exceptional educational
experiences. Approximately 1.7 million visitors enjoyed an educational interaction
with a docent, zookeeper or education staff member. With a rich diversity of plant
life, including more than 30,000 annuals on beautifully landscaped grounds,
the Zoo’s outstanding campus provided unique opportunities to learn about
animals in their natural habitats.

The Zoo’s sustainable practices helped ensure the campus will continue to
attract future visitors. Conservation efforts included recycling tons of cardboard,
paper and metal products, converting restaurant cooking oil to diesel fuel for
Zoo vehicles, and upgrading animal attractions to save energy. The sustainable
practices contributed to over $100,000 in savings.
At the end of a fun-filled day, visitors are amazed at all they have seen and
learned. Whether it was their first or twenty-first visit, they leave excited to
return for another exceptional Zoo experience.

Conservation First
reat leaders confront great challenges with exceptional perseverance.
The Saint Louis Zoo’s conservation initiatives in 2011 established it
first and foremost as a great leader on an international scale.
Research staff at the Institute for Conservation Medicine, which was
established in September, study the relationship among humans,
wildlife and ecosystems to promote better health for people, animals, and the
environment. A leader in this emerging interdisciplinary field, the Zoo partners with
universities, medical schools, ecologists, physicians, veterinarians and other health
professionals. Researchers primarily study infectious diseases shared between
animals and humans.
Dr. Sharon Deem, Director of the Institute for Conservation Medicine, said,
“The challenges of a growing human population, changing environments
and the inter-connected nature of all life on Earth are becoming increasingly
clear. The goal of the Institute for Conservation Medicine is to prevent these
challenges from turning into crises.”
Zoo staff visited Churchill, Manitoba, Canada as guests of the WildCare Institute
project partner, Polar Bears International (PBI), to observe polar bears on the
coastline of the Hudson Bay and meet with polar bear biologists to discuss polar
bear conservation issues. In addition to observing over 20 polar bears, they learned
firsthand from PBI researchers about the negative impact of climate change on
polar bears in their natural environment. They are now developing programs with
the help of our Zoo to address the factors that are contributing to the loss of sea
ice, which could lead to the extinction of the polar bear if left unchanged.
The number of polar bears in Churchill, known as the polar bear capital of the world,
has plummeted 20 percent in the past decade. Bears must endure long fasting
periods due to the late arrival of ice. The Zoo’s efforts, in collaboration with other
wildlife organizations, received media coverage in the Washington Post and the
Parisian publication Le Monde and on ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NPR’s
“Morning Edition.”

Leading the Way
hrough the generous support of many individuals, foundations,
corporations and the Zoo-Museum District, the Zoo’s accomplishments
during the “Year of Firsts” stand second to none in conservation,
research and education.
Memberships achieved record-breaking numbers, with over 40,000
households and nearly 1,000 Marlin Perkins Society members for the first time
in history. The Society has contributed over $11 million throughout its 20-year
history and is a backbone of support, helping to provide free general admission
to all.

Launched in 2010, The Living Promise Campaign reached 83 percent of its
$120 million goal. These leading contributions allowed the Zoo to make great
strides toward Campaign goals: creating dynamic exhibits, enhancing the visitor
experience, modernizing facilities and strengthening the Zoo’s endowment.
Notable achievements included completion of the Wells Fargo South Arrival
Experience—with a new pedestrian bridge, an impressive elephant sculpture
and the famous Z-O-O pylon—and Elephant Woods, a new habitat for the Zoo’s
three generations of elephants. The Zoo dedicated the Myron Glassberg Family
Maintenance Center and broke ground at Sea Lion Sound, an $18 million exhibit
that offers North America’s first walk-through viewing tunnel in a sea lion habitat.
Campaign success has been attributed to excellent donor relations and dedicated
volunteers. Among other corporations, Ameren, Brown Shoe, Enterprise Rent-A-Car,
Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Drury Hotels and Centene demonstrated their commitment
to the Campaign.
Other important investments in the Zoo’s mission included support for the Zoo’s
12 WildCare Centers around the world. Since its founding in 2004, the WildCare
Institute, funded by a $19 million endowment from the Zoo Friends Association
and revenue from the Mary Ann Lee Conservation Carousel, has raised over
$1 million in private donations to save endangered species and their habitats.

2011 FINANCIAL REPORT
he Saint Louis Zoo strives to be a good steward of its financial
resources, with a focus on building a sustainable institution into
the 21st century. The Zoo is committed to being transparent in
all financial statements.
Continued strong attendance, rising per-capita spending and prudent
management of expenses all contributed to the Zoo’s ability to continue to
enhance the visitor experience and provide excellent animal care. With the
wonderful fall and winter weather in 2011, the Zoo had 3,019,597 visitors,
the third highest attendance in its history. In 2011, total revenue was down 12.5
percent, or $8.7 million, primarily due to a $7.3 million decline in investment
returns and a $2.6 million decline in contributions. However, contributions were
a respectable $20 million. Offsetting these factors, our operating revenue from
tax support and visitor spending was up by approximately 3 percent.
The Zoo’s operating expenses of $55.1 million were up 6.3 percent over the
$51.8 million in expenses reported in 2010.

Investment Portfolio
The Zoo’s investments include a diversified mix of money market funds,
certificates of deposit, corporate notes, mutual funds, common stocks
and U.S. government and agency obligations.
The Zoo’s Association and Endowment portfolios decreased about 3 percent
from $74 million in 2010 to $72 million in 2011 due to the liquidation of some
investments. In addition, market downturns in 2011 resulted in investment
losses and a drop in overall investment revenue, offset by realized gains from
interest income and dividends, for a net loss of $812,000. The bar graph
below illustrates the changes in the Zoo’s investment portfolio since 2006.
It is important to note that as part of a 2011 review of the Saint Louis Zoo’s
overall structure, Zoo management was charged with improving and
streamlining the governance and reporting systems in place. This restructuring
has included the 2009 merger of the Saint Louis Zoo Friends Association
and the Saint Louis Zoo Foundation boards to create the Saint Louis Zoo
Association and a refinement of the duties of the Audit, Finance and
Investment committees.
In December, the Saint Louis Zoo Endowment Trust members recommended
the dissolution of this separate non-profit status for the Trust, effective
December 31, 2011. This change is expected to increase efficiency by
establishing one overall support organization for the Zoo—down from
three just a few years ago.

Compared to 2010, tax support from the Zoo Museum District rose by 3 percent
in 2011 to $20.8 million, mainly due to a tax rate increase from $7.27 to $7.64
per $100. Overall, year-to-year revenue was down, primarily due to a $7.3 million
drop in investment portfolio and a decline in total contributions. While giving to
The Living Promise Campaign was still strong in 2011, year-to-year contributions
declined because many early leadership gifts were received in 2010. Average
visitor spending during 2011 was $7.11 per person, a 1.3 percent increase over
the $7.02 per person in 2010.
In 2011, the Saint Louis Zoo continued to advance The Living Promise Campaign,
a $120-million campaign to support development of new animal exhibits,
enhance the visitor experience, upgrade physical infrastructure and strengthen
the endowment. The Campaign ended the year at the $100-million mark.
Philanthropy overall remains strong at the Zoo: The Marlin Perkins Society
surpassed the $1.5 million mark in donations for the second consecutive year,
exceeding the record set in 2010 by 1.8 percent. In addition, the 2011 ZOOFARI
—a major fundraising event—generated $511,079 in net revenue. That surpassed
the 2010 A Zoo Ado event, and was $101,710, or 12.5 percent more than the
2009 ZOOFARI.

Operating expenses increased $3.2 million due to higher salary and benefit
costs, in addition to rising depreciation, utility, repairs/maintenance, and other
expenses. Salary and benefit costs were up $1.7 million, or 6.7 percent, over 2010
numbers primarily due to annual raises and pension increases. Utilities increased
by $472,785, or 19.5 percent, over 2010, due to the reversal of a 2008 contingency
for water and sewer charges. Animal food costs rose 17.8 percent, primarily due
to the high cost of meat and forage. Repairs and maintenance expenses rose
28.4 percent over 2010 numbers due to the one-time cost of the Forest Park Dual
Pathway project. The good news is that supply costs dropped 17.2 percent from
those of 2010.
The year 2011 brought higher depreciation expense due to the greater number
of construction projects completed during the year. In 2011, approximately
$10.4 million was spent on designing and building Sea Lion Sound, which
opened in 2012. The completion of the $2.8 million Myron Glassberg Family
Maintenance Facility has provided a modern structure offering a new workshop
and storage areas. Also, a new, more energy efficient heating, ventilation and air
conditioning system was installed in The Living World, replacing an aging and
often out-of-service system. That cost was $1.2 million.

Conclusion
During the past decade, the Zoo has enjoyed steady
growth in operating revenue, up 40.3 percent from 2002.
The Zoo’s operating cash flow has also been positive.
Net cash increased $1.1 million in 2011­—up 8.6 percent
over 2010 numbers. This was primarily due to an $8.7 million,
or 27.2 percent, increase in cash received from patrons and
contributors. In 2011, the Zoo also realized an increase in
net assets, with totals at $201,514,589—up by $5.8 million
over 2010 net assets.
The Zoo’s dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff
continue to help us pursue our mission as an organization
dedicated to conservation, research and education—all by
providing the best possible experience for our visitors.
The Zoo’s audited financial statements are available
to any interested parties through the Office of the
President & CEO of the Zoo.
