Information on the Book
Title: Secret Daughter
Author: Shilpi Somaya Gowda
Length of Book: 339 pages
I would give this book 4 stars out of 5.
First Sentence of the Book: She came to the abandoned hut at dusk, without a word
to anyone, when she felt the first pulls deep within her.
Based on this sentence alone, the woman in this sentence lives in a hut so she might
be poor. 1 also think the book is about a child because I am assuming that the
woman in this sentence is about to give birth.
The story starts in India, 1984. The five main characters are Kavita and Jasu
(a manned couple in India), Somer and Krishnan (a married couple in
America), and a girl named Asha that connects both families together.
Kavita gives birth to a baby girl named Asha But/When your culture favours
sons, the only way to save your newborn daughter is to give her away.
On the other side of the world, in America, Somer has another miscamage.
She thinks that maybe this is a sign that she's not meant to be a mother...
Thankfully for Kavita, her next child is a boy-they name him Vijay.
Somer and Krishnan decide to adopt a child after discovering that Somer will
never be able to have her own. They decide to adopt a child from India, the
birthplace of Krishnan, and immediately fall in love with a girl with striking

hazel eyes named As ha.
• As Asha grows up, she starts to wonder about her birth parents in India. She
tries questioning Somer but Somer doesn't tell her much because she is
scared that after she tells Asha about how much her birth mom loved her,
she' 11 want to live with her instead.
• Asha wins a competition for journalism and gets to go to India to write a
report on Dharavilone of the biggest slums in Mumbai),
• Before Asha leaves for India, she gets into a fight with her adoptive mother
because Somer is unwilling to let her go to India by herself and possibly try
to locate her birth parents there.
• In India, Kavita and Jasu are struggling to make a living and can barely afford
food, let alone mortgage costs and education for their son.(Butjbne night,
Vijay(their son) leaves and returns with handfuls of cash.
• Meanwhile, Asha is interviewing moms in Dharavi and is quickly realizing
how much her mom has done for her and how fortunate she is to have such a
caring family.
• Somer and Krishnan go to India to visit Asha and see how the report is
going. Everybody apologizes and all is well.
• Kavita and Jasu find out that Vijay has been earning all that money selling
drugs. He is thrown into jail.
• After the loss of her son, Kavita clings on to the memories of her daughter
Asha and cries all day and night wondering whether or not Asha survived.
• Jasu goes to the orphanage and finds out that Asha was adopted and now
leads a happy and healthy life in America. When he tells Kavita, she is weak
with happiness and they rejoice.

Character Information
My favourite character in the book Secret Daughter is Kavita. Despite the
fact that she is not the main character in the book, she is a dynamic character and
the strength in which she has astounds me. Kavita is a poor fanner's wife in rural
India, she has calloused hands and feet from working in the fields with her husband
in order to earn enough income. She has long black curly hair and fair sldn but she
is bruised and scraped all over her body from working nonstop. She has suffered
many emotional blows in her lifetime and the outcome of this is that she has
become stronger as a person. She learns from her past and tries to stay positive.
She is a very determined person -that always puts her family's needs before her
own. She is selfless, brave, compassionate, and, of course, beautiful.

Somer sits up slowly and waits for the pounding in her head to subside
before getting out of bed. In the bathroom, she splashes cold water on her face and
, supports herself on the sink while she retrieves the aspirin from behind the mirror.
After closing it again, she catches her reflection, the image of a middle-aged
woman. Fifty-two. In a few weeks, Krishnan will leave to join As ha in India, and
Somer will be left here alone. And although it is her husband who will be boarding
the plane to fly away, just as their daughter did months ago. Somer cannot help but
wonder if she's the one who drove them to do so. If she, in fact, left them first.

(pages 220,221)
This is my favourite passage because it shows that Somer is worried that she will
never be a good enough mother for Asha. It also shows that their family is going
through a tough time and that they are not all as connected as they were a few years
ago.
