Most recently one of our residents received a telephone call on her cell phone. This resident had a caregiver who answered the telephone. The gentleman said he was the resident’s grandson, and asked to speak to the resident by saying he needed to speak to his grandparent. Once the resident was on the telephone, the gentleman said he had been in an accident and was now in jail. He needed money right away. When the resident commented that the gentleman didn’t sound like her grandson, he said his nose had been broken in the accident. By this time, the caregiver realized that this was a scam. She managed to get the telephone number off the caller ID and then called the police. David Brooks sent out a memo last year about telephone scams. He reminded all of us about “cold call scams” and unwanted solicitation. If you receive calls from someone asking for your information while identifying themselves as being a representative of AT&T, Comcast, Microsoft, etc., they may tell you they can save you money or that your computer has a virus. None of this is true. You will never receive a “cold call” from a reputable organization asking for your information. These calls are from scammers that are trying to get your information. If you receive one of these calls, hang up. If they call back, do not answer, and let someone on the Terrace staff know or your family if they persist. I would like to welcome all the new residents. As always, my door is open, so feel free to stop by and chat or share a concern. 2 Howe–The last time we went on this tour all we saw was sites of a newly proposed 22 -mile city loop, and we learned how leaders planned to upgrade old neighborhoods. Now, Jim will show you how those same areas have been developed, and it will blow you away, as the Beltline has become quite the Atlanta success story! • Friday, April 21st–11:00am–Activities–Conversations with Ed Garcia–Join us for a thoughtful hour of conversation • Saturday, April 22ne–Noon–Dining Room–Tea & Wine Time with Judy on the piano–Join Tabatha and Lavonne for some afternoon fun with Judy on the piano. • Monday, April 24th–Noon–Activities–Men’s Poker Game–See page 5 for details • Tuesday, April25th–9:00am–Parlor–Coffee Talk with Krispy Kreme–Come on down to enjoy some fresh coffee and delicious doughnuts and catch-up with friends. • Wednesday, April 26th–5:00pm–Dining Room–Judy’s April Shower Happy Hour–Have yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the stylings of Judy on the piano. • Thursday, April 27th–11:00am–Dining Room–The Reminiscents Show followed by Brent’s Special Pizza Lunch–Come let this talented and very patriotic female vocal duo perform music that brings an enjoyable recollection of past events. (continued on Page 11) 3 Donna and Mike Catania are the only brother/sister employees on the staff at Saint Anne's. Children of the same father with different mothers, Donna is the older by 16 years. Both happily remember childhood on the Jersey Shore where their father worked at the amusement park near the boardwalk, and they got to ride all the rides for free. Mike says proudly, "We were Boardwalk People." They happily recall that their father traced his Italian heritage to the northern Italian town of Bari, the birthplace of his grandmother. Sadly, he died when Donna was 27 years old, and Mike was only 1 1. Donna moved to Virginia where she was briefly married to a man who tragically died of cancer. Mike joined her in Virginia after he finished high school in New Jersey. This is where the world becomes a tiny place, and the Saint Anne's connection enters their lives. Donna met J.B. Stow, the grandson of our resident Betty Stow, and when he suggested a move to Atlanta, Donna and Mike came along. Today, Donna and J.B. live in Decatur, and Mike boards with Betty Stow's son Tom and his wife Beth. Before he came to Saint Anne's, Mike had worked in an assisted living facility. Now most of us know him as a waiter in the dining room where he has worked for a year and a half. When not in our dining room, he helps out wherever he can at Tom Stow's home and office. He loves computers and remembers a time in high school when he had to learn to take a computer apart and put it back together. Needless to say, his favorite hobby happens to be video games. He enjoys living with the Stow family and especially enjoys their two dogs. Donna joined him here a year ago after working in the office of Kiwi Carpets as a technician 's assistant. Today we all know her as our night desk receptionist and member of the courtesy team. She also stands by to help with TV problems , cell phones and wherever needed. At home she enjoys her two dogs and two cats and makes her version of pizza/spaghetti sauce from scratch, using no ready-made bottle brands. Her definition of "real pizza" is that it must have thin crust and be foldable with the toppings running out. She also loves movies and shopping with friends. Both sister and brother are great at learning the names of residents and answer any request with big smiles. Mike puts it this way, "We just love being here. We truly love you all." - Jackie Hahne Want to see more articles like this? Who else would you like to find out about among the Terrace family? It can be resident, staff or Board Member. Check out the bulletin board for more information about this article and let us know on the sign-up sheet about who you would like to read about next. You may have read the article in the latest AARP bulletin, “50 Proven Things to Add Years to Your Life.” Number 37 on that list is READ! “Scientific research supports the longevity benefits of reading…As little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read.” Just saying! • The Woman Next Door, Yewande Omotoso, fiction, 2016 We all read about Ove, the curmudgeon, and decided we loved him despite his faults. Now we have Hortensia and Marion who live side-by-side and who love to hate each other. Their favorite activity is to annoy each other to the point of violent argument. Then they are happy. Follow their lives as they each meet unexpected happenings, and see how they cope. Some comments about this book: “This book made me howl with laughter and it made me cry.” “…this enlightening and eloquent novel serves as a testament to a truth that we seldom hear: through honest exchange, it is possible for us to free ourselves from the terrible hauntings of history.” • REMINDER: Most of you know that the library will be closed for the month of May while we are being given new and more wonderful surroundings. For you avid/fast readers, I suggest that you check out several books that you know you want to read and have them available during the month. As you finish reading them, you may bring them by my apartment, #218, and I’ll check them back in for you. If I am not there, you may leave them by my door. Also, I plan to take some of the newer and more popular books to my apartment to have on hand in case you run out of something to read and become desperate. I will also be cataloging new books as they come in, and they, too, will be available. I will try to post a list of the books I have, especially the new ones, so you will have that information. Contact me with any questions or suggestions. Apartment 218, phone 404-539-5450 Can’t wait to see what our new area will look like! Happy Reading! 4 - Betty Watkins 9 Be on the lookout for some fun with our young friends from the Day School in April. The All-Stars (kindergartens) will be joining us for a few fun events this month starting on April 1oth at 10:00am, they have been kind enough to give us a guided tour of their fantastic facility. We’ll meet in the lobby at 9:45am and walk over for the tour. All are welcome to join us for what promises to be a fascinating tour. The very next day, on April 11th at 10am, the All-Stars will be coming in small groups to have a sit-down Q & A with several residents. We currently have 3 coming to spend time with the kids, but need two more volunteers to join them. It’ll be a fun morning of sharing stories with a small group of kids. Please let David know if you are interested. Another big event is a special Craft Day with the AllStars on April 19th at 10:30am. The All-Stars have planned out a day full of fun! Some of you may remember all the fun we had through the clay and art projects we’ve done with them in the past, but this time will really take the cake! We’ll set up the Activities room into several stations with a teacher at each station to provide help (1. Legos 2. Clay 3. Collage & Design). Don’t miss your chance to come on down and participate in all the fun with this wonderful group of kids! An eighty year old woman was getting married for the fourth time. A newspaper was interviewing her about her previous marriages. She said she got married the first time in her 20’s to a banker. Then, in her 40’s she married a three ring circus leader. Then in her 60’s she married a preacher. And now she's marrying a funeral home director. When the reporter asked her to some up her marriage experiences the lady replied, when I look back at my previous marriages, I see one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go. Calling all Men! Calling all Men! There has been some interest in restarting our Men’s group. A few years ago we had a men’s group who would go out to lunch once a month and play an occasional cardgame. This month we’re asking for all the men of the Terrace to join us for some fun as we’ll host a Men’s Texas Hold’em Game with snacks and refreshments on April 24th at Noon in Activities. Buy-ins start at $2. If you don’t know how to play don’t worry, we’ll hold a quick tutorial before the betting begins! Ever need a little extra help with your Ipad, tablet or smart phone? Her mantra is that she recognizes that new technology can be challenging to learn, and she wants to share with others that keeping current can help us all age with dignity. Stay tuned to the bulletin board and weekly schedule for information on an upcoming seminar where you’ll get to know Brooke, and you’ll be able to bring your device down and ask questions.
