It is our objective to help you achieve a more profitable operation and reduce everyday wear and tear. To do this, we use the Timeless Genetics© of Emulation, Wye, Rito, and Traveler to breed registered black Angus cattle that meet the needs of today’s producer. One of the measures of our program’s success is that our commercial calves-registered calves that we determine not to include in our herd or sell as registered seedstock--regularly top commercial sales year after year. This year was no exception. We topped the Nebraska state-wide market the week of our sale. One of the purchasers remarked: “I come back year after year, because I never lose money on your calves. They explode when I put them on feed, and I don’t have any problems with them.” The Bulls. This sale features sons of great SVR bulls and of some of the greatest Angus sires of all time: RR Rito 707; F0203; OCC Eureka 865E; Emulation N Bar 5522; EXT; Sinclair Express 6V47; Adelard, Alap, Bear, Contact and Federal of Wye, and Paramount Ambush 2172. The bulls’ mothers are outstanding. The bulls were bred to thrive on the range and on forage. We developed them slowly and only on forage to promote proper skeletal and muscular development. They aren’t hiding behind fat and tons of feed. They will last. We want our bulls to thrive on the range, and not “melt” as “finished” bulls so often do. Customers often tell us that our bulls gain weight during breeding season. SVR bulls transmit structural soundness, fertility, superior teats and udders, functionally low birth weight, balanced growth and outstanding carcass quality. They transmit traditional Angus maternal goodness. These two-year-olds have the proper phenotype, promise calving ease, and have excellent dispositions. They will stamp your calves, assuring uniformity in your calf crop. By the time our bulls are ready for sale as coming two-year-olds, we have evaluated them for libido, fertility, good temperament, physical ability, soundness, and carcass quality. By taking time to develop them properly, we are confident in their ability to pass these essential traits into your herd. In fact, we would use any of these bulls as our herd sires. Bulls are best viewed either in person or when they are moving. You can see the bulls at our ranch (directions are provided at www.svr-angus.com), at the Burwell Livestock Market one day prior to Sale Day, or online at www.superiorlivestock.com. SVR’s log-in page for viewing the bulls and bidding is: http://superiorlivestock.com/production-event-detail?id=1787. Copy and paste either Superior link into your internet browser and hit Return. If you would prefer a CD of the bulls, please call or email us, and we’ll send one to you. You can also view the bulls on our website, www.svr-angus.com. Please visit www.svr-angus.com to learn about our program and see our Herd Bulls, the AI sires and our Foundation Females. You can also watch The American Rancher program that featured our ranch, its history and the history of the Nebraska Sandhills. Selection Process. We strictly, rigorously and regularly score our animals. Mothers. We begin with the mother cows, the foundation of traditional Angus genetics. We do NOT select entirely by the numbers. We cull females that have poor dispositions, poor legs and feet, inferior teat and udder structure and low quality milk. 1 Our cows must maintain excellent fertility and be long-lived. They must be phenotypically correct, feminine and angular, so they calve easily. They must feed their calves properly and cover large amounts of country during the summer. We strive for a mother cow that can wean a calf of at least 50% of her body weight. The Sires. Our AI and herd sires must be masculine and breed with vigor. They must sire outstanding animals that have excellent carcass quality, proper phenotype, quiet dispositions and pass on superior genetics. Although we stress maternal genetics, we keep herd bulls that sire excellent males and females, and pass on the best traits of the traditional Angus animal. We strive to produce bulls that sire uniform calf crops. The Calves. At birth, each calf is tagged, weighed and handled on foot. The mother cannot be overly defensive and it cannot run away. The calf must get up and suck on its own quickly. The cow needs to pair up and take her calf when pairing out. If the mother and the calf do not meet these criteria, they are culled. To aid in our selection process, we also “sample” our calves. They consistently grade “choice” on grass and forage alone. If a particular type of mating can’t meet that objective, we do not continue that breeding. Final Selection. There are two final steps in the selection process. All our animals must be easy to handle. We will not tolerate animals that are difficult to handle, regardless of any other characteristics. The environment makes the final cut. If an animal can’t make it on our native grass, supplemented with salt and mineral, then the environment has culled that animal from our herd. Breeding. The Angus animal can be adapted to many different environments. Recently, it has been used for beef production and has been heavily fed. That is not the typical ranch environment, so we went back in time to find genetics that worked in a range and forage environment. We’re creating a herd based upon older genetics that works on grass. We examined the relevant EPDs. We studied the great, old herds. We asked old-time, great Angus breeders; What is the one bull that you wished you had used more in your herd that produced animals that functioned extraordinarily well on the range and on forage? (Of course, we asked other questions.) The answers were readily forthcoming, and we learned how to incorporate those genetics into our herd. Each year we offer bulls sired by great sires from many years ago. These sires are proven, their breeders know what worked, and we have their history. Simply put, they come from eras when they had to thrive on forage alone. For this sale, we chose a unique battery. Dale and Betty Davis bred RR Rito 707 in their famous Rollin’ Rock herd. Although he needs no introduction, he was the top yearling weight bull and the top-gaining bull with a gain ratio of 129 in the 1968 PIC Bull Test. He recorded an individual weaning ratio of 118 and an individual yearling ratio of 123. His first progeny test group of 27 steers recorded an average daily gain ratio of 111 and graded choice. His dam, Eriskay of Rollin Rock, recorded an individual weaning ratio of 108 on six calves, a progeny gain ratio of 112 on five head and a progeny yearly ratio of 112 on five head, all prior to AHIR. His Weaning Weight EPD is nearly 40 pounds greater than the estimated average of his birth year and his Yearling Weight EPD is 70 pounds greater. Rito 707’s son, PBC 707 1M F0203, was the most noteworthy achievement of Pioneer Beef Cattle. F0203’s fame developed years after his death, and many herdsmen wished they had used him more. He is known for siring great females such as Bemindful Maid DHD 0807, the mother of DHD Traveler 6807; Dixie Erica of CH 1019, the mother of several grand Ohlde bulls, including OCC Emblazon 854E; Blackbird of RR 1204, mother of RR Hero 6267 and several top flight Ohlde bulls; and several other excellent females. He didn’t disappoint with his sons, siring RR Rito Highroller 8025, RR Rito Highroller 9354 and Schearbrook Classic. F0203 earned a progeny weaning ratio of 102 on nearly 1,100 head and a progeny yearling ratio of 103 on more than 600 head with nearly 400 daughters in the AHIR program who posted a collective progeny weaning ratio of 101. You must see his sons. We used Emulation N Bar 5522 because we have found that his offspring perform exceptionally well in the range environment. As Tom Burke pointed out in Angus Legends: “5522 recorded a birth weight of 80 pounds, a 205-day weight of 623 pounds for a weaning ratio of 119, a 365-day weight of 1,196 pounds for a yearling ratio of 121. 5522 gained the reputation for transmitting outstanding udder quality, fertility, femininity and longevity.” His sons and daughters have performed well in our 2 herd. N Bar Emulation EXT is the most widely-used bull of the breed, and lived to be 14. His sons are outstanding, and his daughters are superb. EXT has been widely used to improve teat and udder quality and assure range adaptability. He had a birth weight of 74 pounds, a 205-day weight of 550 pounds for a weaning ratio of 107, a 365-day weight of 1,008 for a yearling ratio of 105, and became a 2,400-pound mature bull. Express 6V47 stamps his calves, and his females are just as good as his bulls, which are superb. At 10 years of age, he’s still at the ranch, walking out to the hills every spring. OCC Broadside and OCC Eureka add thickness, masculinity and spring of rib. As you’ve seen from previous sales, the Broadside/5522 cross is outstanding, and the Eureka calves have topped our sales. The Wye bulls work very well in our environment. Federal of Wye, in our judgment, is the equal of his 7/8’s brother Lodge of Wye. (We encourage you to come to the ranch to see the sons we’re using. They’re HUGE for our program.) Alap was the high seller at the Wye 2001 sale. A Columbus and Bear grandson, Alap may be the best bull bred at the Wye Plantation since the dispersal in the late 1970’s. He and his sons will correct any udder. Contact had tremendous length and sold for $115,500 at the 1978 Wye sale. Bear is a foundation sire for a noted Montana herd. Semen on these bulls is almost non-existent. We have found the Wye animals add tremendous carcass quality, especially when crossed with Rito and Emulation animals. (Many breeders believe that a Rito/Wye cross is the best.) We agree with Jim Lingle, the mastermind of Wye, that they are “practical animals for the practical” producer. Ambush 2172 represents excellent Canadian genetics that works on the range. Amazingly, he produced 120,000 units of semen between 10 and 12 years of age. He weighed 74 pounds at birth (you can see a pattern here), had a 205-day weight of 705 pounds, and weighed 1,261 as a yearling. “He matured into a 2,167-pound bull with a 44-centimeter scrotal circumference.” He was a most consistent sire with progeny ratios of 100 for birth and weaning on nearly 13,000 head and 100 for yearling on more than 8,600 head. Our herd concentrates traditional Angus breeding of Emulation, Wye, Rito and Traveler. Emulation cattle provide unrivaled mothering ability, fertility, calving ease, superb teat and udder structure and survivability, adaptability and longevity in the ranch environment. Wye is original Aberdeen Angus. Wye animals are highly maternal, transmit calving ease, have excellent carcass quality and marble easily on grass. If you trace the lineage of today’s outstanding herds, most have Wye in the pedigrees. Rito/Traveler transmits muscle, adds performance, helps carcass quality and provides gain. Using line breeding and these lines of Angus cattle, we produce outstanding animals. These 86 Registered Black Angus two-year-old bulls embody Timeless Genetics for Today’s Producer. We challenge you to find any other set of bulls that combines the best genetic traits of the Aberdeen Angus breed. These bulls will thrive for you. Please come to sale, and see the difference!
