As the third day of Easter dawns, God’s messengers greet His people with the Good News… PASTOR: RISE! RISE TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS! HE IS RISEN! (ALL) HE IS RISEN INDEED!! Redressing of the Altar: On the first Easter morning the women came to serve. That morning they came to lovingly care for the dead. This morning they also come to lovingly serve, but they serve the living One! His altar is bare as an expression of our sorrow. They come to redress His altar with colors and symbols of life and joy and holiness! Thank you, ladies, for your service! THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Dearly Beloved! We greet you in the name of the Living One! It is because of Christ’s resurrection that we come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father. Here we render thanks for the great benefits that we receive at His hand, set forth His most worthy praise, hear His holy Word, and ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship Him! Let us kneel and bow down before Him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by His infinite grace and mercy. 3 C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against Your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. As He is risen, so raise us that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy name. P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. VERSICLES P: O Lord, open my lips. P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me. be seated INVITATORY P: O come, let us worship the Lord. 4 VENITE THE WORD OF GOD /LECTION THE HYMN He’s Risen, He’s Risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord | 198:1-2 He’s risen, He’s risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord; He opened Death’s prison, the Incarnate Word Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song, And, earth, sea, and mountain, the paean prolong. The Foe was triumphant when on Calvary The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree. In Satan’s domain did the hosts shout and jeer, For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear. please stand 5 GOSPEL LESSON John 20:1-18 (ESV) N ow on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that He had said these things to her. P: O Lord, have mercy upon us. be seated THE SERMON HYMN He’s Risen, He’s Risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord | 198:3-5 But short was their triumph, the Savior arose, And Death, hell, and Satan He vanquished, His foes; The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high. He lives, yea, He lives, and will nevermore die. Oh, where is thy sting, Death? We fear thee no more; Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden’s door. For all our transgressions His blood does atone; Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own. 6 Then sing your hosannas and raise your glad voice; Proclaim the blest tidings that all may rejoice. Laud, honor, and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who sitteth in glory and ever shall reign. SERMON CROSSING THE RIVER THE EXORDIUM HYMN He is Arisen! Glorious Word! | 189 He is arisen! Christ victorious riseth glorious, life He giveth— He was dead, but see, He liveth! ISAIAH 43:2 WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS, I WILL BE WITH YOU; AND THROUGH THE RIVERS, THEY SHALL NOT OVERWHELM YOU; WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH FIRE YOU SHALL NOT BE BURNED, AND THE FLAME SHALL NOT CONSUME YOU. THE CANTICLE HYMN Jesus Lives, the Victory’s Won | 201 Jesus lives! The victory's won! Death no longer can appal me; Jesus lives! Death's reign is done! From the grave Christ will recall me. Brighter scenes will then commence; This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! To Him the throne High o'er heaven and earth is given. I shall go where He is gone, Live and reign with Him in heaven. God is faithful. Doubtings, hence! This shall be my confidence. Jesus lives! For me He died, Hence will I, to Jesus living, Pure in heart and act abide, Praise to Him and glory giving. Death is no longer humanity’s master. And if death has been conquered, this means our sins are forgiven. We gather this morning to thank You for Your work on our behalf; For humbling Yourself to be conceived and born in our mortal flesh and blood, For keeping God’s Law perfectly in our place, For suffering the punishment our sins have deserved, And for dying in our place. C: Risen, now we pray to You: P: Help us to live in the truth of these things. C: Help us to live as if we are not slaves to sin, P: Help us to resist sin, to flee temptation, to fight the good fight of faith. C: Help us to behave toward others as kind and lovingly as You have behaved toward us. P: And help us to forgive others as completely as You have forgiven us. C: And help us to live our lives knowing that death does not end them, that instead Your people are welcomed home in Heaven. P: These things we pray in all boldness and confidence, Your resurrection being proof of Your love toward us and of Your power to answer these prayers. C: Amen. KYRIE 8 LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. MORNING PRAYER P: Let us pray: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, having safely brought us to the beginning of this day, defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doing, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. be seated ANNOUNCEMENTS please stand BENEDICAMUS P: Let us bless the Lord.
