PROVERBS: HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND RELATE TO A MOCKER I. HOW TO RECOGNIZE A MOCKER A. DEFINITION - People who mock, deride, and scoff at people, someone who scoffs at religion, its ordinances and teachers, and who makes a mockery of sin and the judgments of God against sinners. B. CHARACTERISTICS 13:1 – “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.” They are always __________________. 9:7a – “Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults…” - disdain 9:8a – “Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you…” They are filled with hatred and ___________________. 21:24 – “The proud and arrogant person - “Mocker” is his name - behaves with insolent fury.” There’s that deadly combination of _______________________ and anger. 1:22 – “How long will mockers delight in mockery?” 29:8 – “Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger.” II. BEING A MOCKER HAS CONSEQUENCES 9:12 – “if you are a mocker, you _________________ will suffer.” Because, Prov. 24:9b – “…people detest a mocker.” Prov. 3:34 – “He (GOD) mocks proud mockers” - PROV. 1:24-33 III. HOW TO RESPOND TO A MOCKER Prov. 15:12 – “Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise.” Prov. 9:7,8 – “Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes (correct) the wicked incurs abuse. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.” Don’t try to instruct them or _______________ them. Matt. 7:6 – “Jesus said, Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” MATT. 10:11-15 29:8 – “Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger” 22:10 – “Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.” CONCL. 1. When you encounter mockers, remember what Solomon says about how to react. 2. Don’t be a mocker!!! Recognize your need for God – and receive His grace!!
