Matthew Bartz (Burlington, WI), a major
in Business Administration, hopes one of
his many interviews comes through with a
job offer. Matt hopes to own his own
business one day, but is trying to get some
experience first. During his time at Beloit,
he was a member of the baseball team
earning a letter all four years. He also
played football earning one letter. Matt also
co-owned and operated his own bike rental
business while at Beloit College. He recently
sold his half of the business to a younger
student to keep the business going in the
future. He credits Beloit College for giving
him experiences that he could not have
gotten anywhere else in the world. He
would like to specifically thank Jerry
Gustafson for being a great advisor and
inspiring his entrepreneurial spirit.
Taylor Bixby (Portland, OR) is a double
major in Economics & Management and
Environmental Studies. He will spend his
summer traveling in Bali, and boating down
to Sydney, Australia, where he will finish his
8th semester abroad at Macquarie
University. Taylor possesses a long-time
passion for finding cost effective ways to
resolve environmental problems. Last
summer, his interests led him to intern with
a weatherization agency in Madison, WI,
where he worked developing a for-profit
arm for the agency. The previous summer
he worked with a green builder in Portland,
Oregon. During his time spent at Beloit,
Taylor was an active participant in the OEC
(Outdoor Environmental Club) and served
as president this past year. He also worked
with a small group of students to create the
Efficiency Rewards Program and the Beloit
College Revolving Loan Fund on Campus.
After graduating, Taylor hopes to find a job
in energy efficiency project management.
Esther Chiu (Verona, WI) is a major in
Economics and Management with minors in
Computational Visualization and Modeling.
She received the Eaton Scholarship and the
Sau-Wing Lam Endowed String Scholarship.
Her future plans include working on a
special project regarding both Economics
and Computer science on a Wal-Mart store
visualization map with Jie Fu, attending
graduate school at UW-Madison, and
finding a full-time job near home. Beloit has
given Esther many opportunities for her
future. Her study abroad program in Hong
Kong expanded her cultural experiences.
While there, she was able to find a part-time
job teaching English to local kids during the
semester. Moreover, she interned at Jijiang
Company (in Hong Kong) during the
summer, where she learned more about
businesses, marketing, and accounting.
Esther also participated in the Mercatus
Center’s Katrina Project by translating
interview tapes. Her extra-curricular
activities included playing volleyball,
participating in BAAC (Beloit Athletic
Advisory Committee – co-president for one
semester), and being a member of the Beloit
College Chamber and Regular Orchestra.
Outside of the college, she is a member of
the BJSO (Beloit Janesville Symphony
Orchestra) which she has been a part of
since her sophomore year and hopes to
continue playing in after graduation. Aside
from academics, Esther enjoys playing with
her two dogs, eating sushi, and hopes to
find a competitive volleyball team to play
on.

John Henry Erikson (Beloit, WI), an
Economics and Management major, has
applied to several market research firms
across the U.S., as well as, some
management positions in the Midwest. He
plans to attend business school after gaining
workplace experience. During his time at
Beloit, Henry had the opportunity to start a
successful market research company, C & E
Marketing, in Beloit College’s CELEB. He
also had the opportunity to be a Partner for
the Economic Department’s Belmark
Associates. He was a four year member of
Beloit College Men’s Soccer Team, a three
year member of the Academic AllConference team, and captained the team
his senior year. Through the Office of
International Education, he was able to
study abroad in Dunedin, New Zealand,
during the spring semester of his junior year.
Throughout his time at Beloit College,
Henry’s experiences, support from his
peers, and advice and guidance from all of
his professors allowed him to be chosen for
the Severson Award by the Department of
Economics and Management. Beloit College
has been a special place for Henry. He
would like to thank, from the bottom of his
heart, the students, professors, and faculty
who helped shape him into the person he is
today.
Yuan (Sylvia) Feng (Dujiangyan, China), a
double major in Economics and
Mathematics, will be working for RegalBeloit Corporation in Beloit, Wisconsin as a
Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Sylvia will apply
statistical tools, analyze data, identify
inefficient processes, and execute Lean Six
Sigma strategies to eliminate low value steps
and waste, increase customer satisfaction,
and improve process capability and quality.
As an international student at Beloit, she
decided to study abroad in Budapest. This
experience later inspired her to conduct
research in Mumbai on economic reforms in
1990’s India. She interned with CNN
Research in Hong Kong, Siemens Medical
Solutions Group in Beijing, and Regal-Beloit
Corporation which led to her first job. As
RA, TA, and member of the International
Education Committee, she was active in
serving the college community. She is
grateful for the multicultural and
interdisciplinary education she received
from Beloit College. She has gained
confidence and curiosity, and is prepared to
take on more challenges and responsibilities.
Jie Fu (Shanghai, China) is double majoring
in Mathematics and Economics &
Management,
with
a
minor
in
Computational Visualization & Modeling.
She will be interning with the Office of
Institutional Research, Assessment, and
Planning and will also work for the Liberal
Arts in Practice Center (LAPC) at Beloit
College this summer. During her time at
Beloit College, she has been involved in
many different things. She was involved in
the start up of the WISE (What is Social
Excellence) Foundation with two other
students on campus and will continue
working and expanding the functions of the
foundation this summer. During her
freshman year, she represented the Beloit
College Admissions Office and traveled to
China with six college administrators
including the president to recruit Chinese
students. Following the trip, she was
awarded the Roxie Alexander Memorial
Prize. She also worked with fellow student,
Esther Chiu, on an innovative research
project that involved combining the
knowledge of economics and computer
visualization based on the real data of
Facebook. Last year, she worked with
Professor Josh Hall on a paper
entitled Fremont General Corporation Subprime
Crisis, and it will be published in Boom and
Busts, An Economic Encyclopedia. In
addition to these, she was involved as an RA
(Resident Assistant) for two years, academic
senator for Division 1, representative of
4
Judicial Board, Varsity Cross Country,
Mathematical Modeling contest and an
active member of CELEB.
Department for providing support and
guidance, particularly his advisor, Jeff
Adams.
Matt Johannsen (Muscatine, IA), majoring
in Economics and Computer Science, will
be starting at IBM in Dubuque, Iowa, later
this month as a middleware technologies
specialist. The position is a meaningful
continuation of his current work as the
Belcon Director of Technology and time off
campus as an intern in information systems
at Iowa Health last summer. He also worked
previously as a research assistant with
Belmark Associates and is a former intern
with Eagle One Investments. Despite these
and considerable academic obligations as a
double major, Matt has found time to
pursue various extracurricular interests over
the last four years, including varsity cross
country, indoor track, golf, and intramural
frisbee, in addition to service opportunities
as both the TKE Academic Adviser and
Philanthropy Chair. Having built this solid
foundation of cross-divisional coursework,
and athletic endeavor, Matt is well-prepared
for the opportunities ahead and eager to
move on to the next challenge.
Dylan Kocinski (Kenosha, WI) is a double
major in Mathematics and Economics. He
will be working with Beloit College alumnus
John Carroll at Allstate Insurance in Beloit
upon graduation. While at Beloit, he
participated in baseball, football, and tennis.
He received academic-all conference in the
fall of 2009, as well as, being a member of
the Dean’s List. He was a four year
Presidential Scholar and also received a four
year Dr. James Ferwerda Trustee
Scholarship. He was fortunate enough to
connect with many alumni through his work
study position in the External Affairs office.
He also connected with the Beloit
community by volunteering at the Beloit
Stateline Literacy Council and tutoring at
Beloit Memorial High School.
Adam Kennedy (Washington, DC) is
graduating with a major in Economics &
Management. Following graduation, Adam
plans to work for a congressional campaign.
Before and during his time at Beloit, Adam
was involved in politics. He held internships
with think tanks, the Senate, the House of
Representatives,
and
a
presidential
campaign. Adam also interned with CDC
Development Solutions, a development
NGO. After working on a campaign in the
Fall, Adam hopes to travel to Asia or South
America. In the Economics Department,
Adam considers himself lucky to have taken
Warren Palmer’s Accounting and Finance
classes, Josh Hall’s Public Sector class, and
Emily Chamlee-Wright’s Senior Seminar.
He is thankful to the entire Economics

Christine Kon (Shah Alam, Malaysia) is an
Economics & Management major with
minors in Mathematics and Music. Currently
trying to climb a coconut tree (or become
employed, ref: Diamond’s model of thick
market complementarities), she is certain
that her Beloit education and her Belmark
experiences will give her a good first-leg-up
the tree. Beloit College gave Christine the
opportunity to integrate her many interests
into her curriculum and extra-curricular
activities; besides playing in the college’s
Piano Ensemble for 2 years she also studied
Chinese and served as President of the
Chinese Club. In the past semester, she also
initiated a special project, overseen by Bob
Elder, for economics students to apply
econometrics using different software
languages. Academic recognitions include
being named to the Dean’s List, inducted to
Phi Sigma Iota and Phi Beta Kappa, and
awarded the Elaine and Lester McAllister
Award and Roxie Alexander Memorial
Award. Christine would like to thank all the
professors, alumni and staff of the
Economics Department not only for all the
great conversations and fun class times but
also their guidance, support and show of
confidence in her, which she feels has been
displayed not only in the classroom but
outside it as well. No matter where she ends
up in the future, Christine hopes to become
a valuable member of the alumni of the
department and the college. May we meet
again (and often) in the Econ Days and
Upton Forums of the future!
Maria Lajewski (Chicago, IL) is a double
major in Economics & Management and
Sociology. During her time at Beloit, Maria
was a Duffy Community Partnerships intern
with 4-H Rock County, a student
coordinator at the Campus and Community
Outreach Center for two years, a Resident
Assistant and an avid volunteer. Maria also
took advantage of the opportunity to study
abroad by spending a semester in Cape
Town, South Africa her junior year. Her
experiences working with an education
NGO in an urban township not only
intensified her passion for economic
development and education, but became the
focus of her senior thesis in economics and
her presentation at the 2010 Spring
Symposium. Maria deeply values the liberal
arts education she has received from Beloit
College, as well as her professors both inand outside of the department. Looking
towards the future, Maria is interviewing
with several non-profit organizations and
businesses and has been offered a position
with Teach for America. Maria looks
forward to returning to Beloit to attend the
2010 Upton Forum, which ignited her
interest in pursuing an economics major her
sophomore year.
Jin Li (Shanghai, China)
Brian S. Liewergen (Elk Grove, IL)
Max Maiken (Beloit, WI) graduates with a
major in Economics. After rediscovering his
musical passion, Max hopes to begin
pursuing a path that applies both his major
and passion. He will be working with Ian
Nie this summer to help get Beloit College’s
record label (Ribbon Records) off the
ground and then he hopes to land a job in
the music industry. Max had the opportunity
to study abroad with the University of
Virginia’s Semester at Sea program where he
circumnavigated the globe docking at ten
countries along the way. As a member of
the men’s swim team for three years, he was
able to be a part of three school records in
the 200 free, 200 medley, and 400 medley
relays and was a team captain his junior year.
During the summer of 2009, he had the
opportunity to work as a market research
partner with Belmark Associates where he
helped create an economic snapshot of
Beloit’s City Center. He has been a member
of the Beloit College Concert Band playing
6
first clarinet and the Beloit College Jazz
Band playing first tenor. He would like to
thank the faculty of the Department of
Economics for all their support and help in
his four years at Beloit and to the College.
Stacy Michel (Elgin, IL) is graduating with
a degree in Economics & Management.
After transferring to Beloit as a junior, Stacy
has been a regular on the Dean’s List and
has been very involved in campus activities,
such
as
Spiritual
Life
programs,
International Club, and a weekly radio show
on WBCR, Beloit College Radio. She also
helped start intramural volleyball, basketball,
and ultimate frisbee teams during her time
here. During her senior year, Stacy worked
as a student worker for the Department of
Economics & Management, and was a part
of the Charles G. Koch Student Research
Colloquium. She will never forget the
countless hours she spent in the Kemper
Lab working on Quant, meeting Hernando
de Soto, the day Bob Elder referenced
Coldplay in class, the fear associated with
presenting her senior seminar paper in
Emily Chamlee-Wright’s class, and all the
fantastic people she spent time with in
classes. While her future is still unsure, Stacy
is excited about using her hard-earned
degree. She expresses many thanks to the
Economics professors for shaping her
mind, as well as her friends on campus who
she will miss dearly.
Timothy Mohs (Chicago, IL) is graduating
with a major in Business Administration.
While at Beloit, Tim took an interest in
accounting and plans to attend either
University of Illinois-Chicago or DePaul
University in Chicago in the fall in pursuit
of a Masters of the Science of Accountancy.
This two-year program will culminate in
becoming a CPA upon passing the CPA
exam. Tim also has an interest in U.S.
History, taking almost all of the courses in
this field offered at Beloit College. While at
Beloit, Tim was involved in the Tau Kappa
Epsilon (TKE) fraternity where he made
some of the best friends of his life. Another
group that meant a lot to Tim was
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA),
which met weekly and was a great source for
spiritual guidance and support. The
experiences of undergraduate college have
produced memories that will certainly last a
lifetime. Tim would like to thank each
professor in the Department of Economics
& Management for all of their hard work
developing him as a student and as a person.
Matthew Nattinger (Beloit, WI) is
graduating with a degree in Economics.
During his time at Beloit, he was a McNair
Scholar, a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon,
took part in Beloit Student Congress, served
on IFPC, was a member of the Koch
Colloquium, was a Duffy Community
Partner, and tutored many of the classes for
the
Economics
Department.
After
graduation, Matthew will be attending the
University of Iowa’s Graduate School and
will be participating in the Pharmaceutical
Socioeconomics Ph.D. program. Matthew
would like to thank all of his professors who
supported him along the way. He believes
that the professors in the Economics
Department have the best to offer students
on campus and are wonderful people who
have always been there for him.
Vu T. Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam)
Mary Parker (Kansasville, WI) will be
graduating in December 2010 with degrees
in Business Administration and Education:
Adolescents and Schools. During her time

basketball and volleyball. She earned four
7
varsity letters in basketball, and will add her
4th in volleyball this fall. Mary was elected
Team Captain her junior and senior seasons
for both sports, as well as, being named 1st
Team All-Midwest Conference for both
sports, both years. She was the recipient of
the Red Janssen Most Courageous Athlete
Award as a junior. Mary’s teammates voted
her multiple awards all four years in both
sports, including Most Improved, Hustle
Award, Defensive Player of the Year, and
Most Valuable Player. Academically, Mary
has been on the Dean’s List five semesters
and Midwest Conference Academic AllConference for four athletic seasons. She
also received the Kohler Company
Scholarship as a junior and senior. This fall
Mary will return to Beloit College to finish
her volleyball career, and to do student
teaching at Clinton High School alongside
Beloit College alum Frank Crivello. In the
future, Mary hopes to teach high school
economics and/or open her own business.
She would like to thank all of the faculty
and staff at Beloit College for their constant
support these past four years.
Jesse Schiefelbein (Milton, WI) is
graduating with an Economics &
Management major.
He plans on
continuing to work for his father’s sheet
metal fabricating company in Milton in
order to pursue his career in business. After
his two and a half years at Beloit, he is very
appreciative of those who helped him learn
both in and out of the classroom. The
variety of students and faculty that he has
interacted with made his time here a
memorable experience.
Joe Seidel (Flossmoor, IL), a major in
Economics & Management and minor in
Philosophy, will be returning to Hyde Park
to work at the University of Chicago Becker
Center on Price Theory. He spent the
summer of 2009 as an intern working for
John List, a professor of economics at the
University of Chicago, known for his
innovative use of field experiments. As an
intern, Joe was the project leader for one of
List’s charitable-fundraising studies. Joe was
also a marketing and consulting intern for
Nikki’s Café during the Fall ‘09 semester.
During his time at Beloit he was a
Presidential Scholar and frequented the
Dean’s List. He was a four year letter
winner on the swim team, a captain his
senior year, and a current record holder.
Andrew Serwadda (Kampala, Uganda) will
be graduating with a major in Economics &
Management and a minor in Political
Science. His four years of experience here at
Beloit has been life changing as he has had
the opportunity to meet new people and
engage in the many activities and
opportunities that Beloit has had to offer.
Andrew was an active member with clubs
such as; International Club, BSU (Black
Student’s United), Africa Club and also
participated in the Varsity Basketball Team
his first two years. Andrew reflects that
“Beloit gave him the chance to express his
interests and goals with professors, and
through that they have been able to guide
me with knowledge and expertise.” His
experiences such as attending CEO
Conferences in Chicago and meeting
influential people during the Upton Forums
have all helped shape his experiences and
goals. While at Beloit, he had the
opportunity to participate in the Sanger
Summer Fellowship where he worked with
his
advisor
on
the
post-Katrina
redevelopment process. He also participated
in the WISE foundation at CELEB. After
Beloit, Andrew will be working in New
Orleans with an African Foundation that
looks at initiatives that support sustainable
development
and
promote
social
entrepreneurship. Beloit has truly helped
him grow as an individual.
8
Scott Slubowski (Palos Hills, IL) is a
Business Administration major who will be
taking on the role of Vice President of BD
Clean LLC in Madison, Wisconsin. He will
be working alongside fellow Beloit alumni,
Brandon D’Orazio ’07. During his time at
Beloit, Scott worked in the Athletic
Department with Coach Dave DeGeorge
and staff. Scott earned four varsity letters in
baseball. He was named to the All MWC
First Team twice (2008 and 2009). He was
also voted the team’s most valuable player in
2008. He was selected as the teams’
Defensive Player of the year twice (2008 and
2009) and was named team captain for his
junior and senior years. Scott was also given
the Donald E. Janseen Award in 2009 for
Outstanding Junior Athlete of the Year.
Scott’s most notable memory from his time
at Beloit was winning the 2009 Midwest
Conference Championship. Scott credits
Beloit for giving him the opportunity to
define himself as a person.
Benjamin James VanMetre (Bartlett, IL)
is a double major in Economics &
Management and Psychology. During Ben’s
time at Beloit, he has published in
Economic Affairs, The Journal of the James
Madison Institute, and on Forbes.com (an
article later cited by Glenn Beck in his 2009
book). Ben worked closely with Professors
Joshua Hall and Emily Chamlee-Wright on
his senior thesis titled Property Rights and the
Return to Capital, which will soon be
published as a book chapter in the second
volume of the Wealth and Well-Being of
Nations. Ben has recently accepted an
internship with the House Republican
Organization in Illinois for this upcoming
summer. He is also excited to continue his
education this fall by pursuing a Masters
Degree in the field of economics. He would
like to thank all of the professors in the
Beloit College economics department for
making the Beloit experience both
challenging and engaging and ultimately for
providing him with a life changing
experience; extending a special thanks to
Professor Joshua Hall who has co-authored
with Ben on 4 publications, made it possible
for him to attend the APEE (Association of
Private Enterprise Education) conference in
Las Vegas this year, and has greatly
extended Ben’s network by introducing him
to many prominent economists in the field.
Noah Watenmaker (summa cum laude, Santa
Monica, CA) is graduating with a major in
Economics & Management with a focus on
entrepreneurship, and a minor in English
with a focus on critical theory. As an
undergraduate, he owned and operated
Epicurus Guitars, a guitar repair and
construction firm. Additionally, he has had
an architectural internship, a guitar-building
apprenticeship, and he managed a
microfinance
office
for
Volunteer
Partnerships for West Africa, an NGO in
Ghana. He graduates Phi Beta Kappa. He
plans on moving to Berkeley, California
with his girlfriend Kayla Svoboda to pursue
graduate studies and a career in creative
management.
Geoffrey E. Wickens (Lindstrom, MN) is
graduating with a degree in Business
Administration. Following graduation, he
will be serving as a Conservation Intern with
the United States Forest Service in Flathead
National Forest, Montana. During his time
at Beloit, he was awarded the Brannon
Presidential Scholarship, spent 3 semesters
on the Dean’s List, was the Teaching
Assistant for Econ 199, was a member of
the Varsity Men’s Tennis team, managed the
men’s soccer team, and spent a lot of time
recreating with his peers. His studies in the
Economics Department started on the very
first day at Beloit, writing memos for Jeff’s
FYI. He states, “I guess it must have been
influential because I didn’t ever change
advisors, even if it did take me until the end
of my sophomore year to finally succumb
9
and declare a Business major. It’s a decision
I’m glad I made. I feel privileged to have
paired my business course work with reallife business experience, working during the
summers as a part of my family’s business
and with another small manufacturing
business. Being able to spend my summers
learning from entrepreneurs while learning
Business and Economics under the
attention and guidance of all of my
professors has been very meaningful.
Someday I plan to start a business of my
own.”
Robert Wimmer, a senior who grew up in
the nearby city of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, has
done a great many things with his time at
Beloit College. While playing basketball for
the Bucs for three years, golf for four, and
earning 5 Midwest Conference Academic
All Conference awards, Bob was also the
President of the Sigma Chi Fraternity on
campus. Bob said, "the management skills I
have attained from being President of a
national organization like Sigma Chi, has
given me more hands on experience than I
could have received anywhere else on
campus." Bob already has a few job
opportunities for after graduation, and has
been a valuable asset to the Beloit College
community.
Mitchell Young (Highland Park, IL) has
had a full four years. Ever since being in Jeff
Adams' FYI it was clear that economics was
the most interesting field of study. With
everything from Emily's piercing questions
to Bob's Yoda impression, the Department
has made sure the dismal science was always
approachable. When not in class, Mitchell
has been very active with the Beloit Student
Congress, where he served as vice president
and president. He also is a brother of the
Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and had the
opportunity to be the treasurer and later
president of that organization. Mitchell
would like to thank Jeff Adams and Josh
Hall for all of their support when he really
needed it.
Yuanchen (Cynthia) Zhao (Shanghai,
China) is a double-major in Economics and
International Relations and a minor in
Mathematics. She will spend the summer
following graduation interning with Nike at
the headquarters in Portland, Oregon. After
the Nike internship, she will return to the
Midwest for a Process Analyst position with
Aon Consulting in Chicago and Glenview,
Illinois starting in August. In addition to
becoming a world traveler, Cynthia hopes to
eventually start and run her own business
that enables her to have a meaningful life
and make an impact on other people's lives.
Last summer, she worked with a Beloit alum
as a marketing assistant at Northwestern
Mutual Financial Networks. She also had a
consulting analyst internship at a private
equity consultancy in Chicago during the
summer after her junior year. Her other
internships include marketing or finance
with the Hendricks Development Group
and Orlandi, Inc. in New York. Cynthia
was honored with the Dean's List, Moore
Family Scholarship, Jed Rhoads Internship
Award and Thomas N. Mathers Award.
During her time at Beloit, she was highly
involved in the Model United Nations Club.
She was president for about a year and a
half and attended MUN conferences in
Chicago, San Francisco and New York.
Cynthia was also involved in the
entrepreneurship club; she attended CEO
conferences and made great connections
with young entrepreneurs outside of Beloit.
Cynthia also enjoyed being an RA, because
it allowed her to be involved on campus and
be surrounded by a group of motivated,
diverse and interesting people. The best part
of her Beloit experience is the support from
the wonderful professors, alums and friends
at Beloit.
