Chili Cook-Off Rules
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Competitor registration forms (with payment)
will be accepted no later than May 16, 2013.
Contestants may enter as an individual or team. Teams are limited to three (5) people. Only one
chili recipe may be submitted for each entry.
The entry fee is $25. Per team.
For purposes of this event, chili is defined as any kind of meat, or combination of meats,
cooked with red chili peppers, various other spices and other ingredients with the exception of
fillers such as pasta or rice, which are strictly forbidden. Beans are allowed. 2 Gallon Min.
No ingredient may be precooked or treated in any way prior to the setup period the day of the
cook-off. The only exceptions are canned or bottled tomatoes, tomato sauce, peppers, pepper
sauce, beverages, broth, and grinding and/or mixing the spices. Meat may be pre-cut or ground,
but not treated in any way. All other ingredients may be pre-chopped, but must be prepared and
cooked at the cook-off. No Wild Game allowed.
SMS will supply a 12 foot table for each team. Teams must supply their own heat for cooking,
utensils table covering and a bottle of bleach.
One ounce portions of chili will be served to the public in tasting cups. SMS will provide tasting
spoons and cups for serving the chili.
When serving chili to the public, no cash may be accepted. Chili may only be served to holders
of a valid tasting ticket issued by the SMS.
Chili will be judged in two categories:
(a) Judges’ Choice. A special panel of judges will select winners based on the following criteria:
(1) Good flavor; (2) Texture of the meat; (3) Consistency; (4) Blend of spices; (5) Aroma; and (.
Samples of each chili entry will be collected in numbered cups at the start of the contest for
blind judging. Prizes 1st $300 2nd $125 3rd $75 All winners receive trophies.
(b) People’s Choice. The public attendees will cast votes for their favorite chili by depositing
“vote tickets” in a container (provided) by the SMS. When the first pot of chili runs out and/or
the SMS chili official calls time, the contest is over and the vote containers will be collected for
counting. Winner will receive Trophy.
Contestants must be present during the entire time of the competition (serving, judging, etc.)
Do not allow tasting by family or visitors prior to the official opening of the chili tasting at 2:00
PM
Each team is responsible for completely policing and cleaning up their area at the end of the
tasting and removing all items from the area. No items shall be allowed to remain after the
close of the event. Anything items remaining after the event will be discarded.
No alcoholic beverages may be brought on-site by any team, contestant or guest.
Any individual or team may be disqualified or removed from the competition for failure to
adhere to these rules.
