ROLE OF TEACHER AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN
SECURING NATIONAL INTEGRATION

Abstract
India is facing a number of problem after the attainment of Independence. Out of these problems,
National integration is a most serious one. To solve this problem Secondary Education Commission suggests
- "Education System must make its contribution to the development of habits, attitudes and qualities of
character, which will unable its citizens to bear working the responsibility of democratic citizenship and to
counteract all those fissiparous tendencies which hinder the emergence of aboard national and secular outlook. "
Role of teacher and educational institutions in securing national integration is very important.
Keywords : Independence, National Integration, Education System, Citizenship, Secular,
Educational Institutions.
Nationalism and Education
The rise and fall of nation depends upon the extent of the development of a
feeling of nationalism in its citizens. If this feeling is developing progressively, the
nation will rise on the ladder of greatness step by step till the pinnacle of glory is
attained. It is the feeling of nationalism in the citizens which is responsible to the rise or
fall of a nation. Hence, this feeling needs to be developed and strengthened by all
possible ways and means. Education is the most potent and effective means for this
great task. It is why each nation formulates its aims of education and organizes its
educational structure according to its own needs and requirements and with the
definite goal of developing this feeling of nationalism in its citizens.
Merits of Education for Nationalism
The merits of Education for nationalism are as under 1. Political Unity
2. Social Progress
2. Economic Progress
4. Development of Culture
5. Eradication of Corruption
6. Development of Self-Sacrifice
7. Development of National Language.
Obstacles to National Integration
There are many obstacles to national integration. The main obstacles are given below

1. Casteism
2. Communalism
3. Provincialism
4. Diverse Languages
5. Social Differences
6. Economic Differences
7. Lack of Leadership
8. Unsuitable Education
Role of Teacher and Educational Institutions
These are the following measures for national unity which require role of
teachers, and educational institutions 1.
Scrutiny should be made of the books, taught in schools.
2.
Items which spoil national outlook and preach antinational things should be
removed from those books.
3.
People of different castes and religions should willingly participate in
national fairs and festivals.
4.
Dramas and discussions advocating national harmony should be organized all
over the country.
5.
Motion Picture, Radio, Television and newspaper should be harnessed to
achieve national unity.
6.
Special films should be made to demolish antinational tendencies.
7.
All government services should be thrown open to all without any consideration
of caste, creed, colour, sex, region and province.
8.
National views and attitudes of the candidates should be tested and given due
credit while recruiting them for higher posts and services. Keeping into
consideration the above recommendation, the programme of education in
schools should be organized in such a way that they foster a spirit of ardent
nationalism and national unity. We are throwing light on the educational
programme to be organized at different levels in the following lines :
1. Primary Stages : At this stage the following programmes should be organized :
I)
Children should learn about National Flag, National Song, National Emblem,
National Flower, National Bird and other National objects.
ii)
Independence day and Republic Day should be celebrated as national
festival by all people of the land.
iii)
Children's day, Teacher's day and birth-days of great personalities should be
celebrated with interest and enthusiasm.
iv)
Children should be made to know about the life stories of great Indian saints.

v)
Folk songs and folk lores should form an important part of curriculum.
vi)
Stories about the various areas of country should be told to children.
vii)
A general description regarding the society of India should be given to children.
viii)
Human geography of all areas should be taught to all children in a general way.
2. Secondary Stages : At this stage the following programmes is prescribed :
I)
Children should be taught about the social and cultural history of the nation.
ii)
They should learn about the social conditions and cultural traditions of
different regions of the country.
iii)
Children should learn about the economic development of India.
iv)
National consciousness should be inculcated and stimulated.
v)
Lectures by leaders, discussions, debates, symposia about national
consolidation and national unity should be organized in all schools.
vi)
More and more use of national language should be encouraged in all spheres
of national life.
3. University Stages : At this stage the following programmes is suggested at the
University stage :
I)
Students should be afforded more and more opportunities to do comparative
study of various religious, regional cultures and languages with all seriousness
and sincerity.
ii)
Youth festivals and other similar programmes should be organized throughout
the country.
iii)
Study circles, symposia, discussion and debates should be organized for
youths to participate and speak about topics of national importance of
various places in the country from time to time.
Conclusion
Education for nationalism is must for national unity and national development. In
securing national integration, the role of teacher and educational institution one very
important. So, education should be organized and those educational programmes be
structured which teach the essential unity in the diversities of national life, and which try to
inculcate in the children qualities of communal harmony and human fellow-feelings.
