Diploma in Applied Management in HR
eah Seno is an integral part
of the very rich tapestry of
life experiences you find on a
WelTec campus.
Just graduated with a Diploma in Applied Management in HR, Leah came to
live in New Zealand a couple of years
ago after she tired of the noise and
pollution in her native country
The Philippines.
An old highschool friend
had moved out here and had
been encouraging her to
make the move too. She
started to read about New
Zealand and the more she
read, the more she liked it.
Leah is a mature student, she’d spent the past
20 years in the business
world in Manila and was
now keen to expand her
horizons. Human Resources was a field that
held a lot of interest
for her and she began
investigating her options for study here.
The choice came
down to two institutions. Of those two
she chose WelTec, firstly because of its
location in the Capital – the other was in
the South Island and she’d been warned
it was a lot colder down there. And
secondly, while the programmes each
institution was offering seemed virtually the same, WelTec’s tuition fees won
hands down.
Leah appreciated the practical nature
of the course. “It wasn’t all concept and
theory. Our assignments usually required
us to go out and work with real-world
business organisations and meet real
business leaders. So I was able to make
immediate application to what I learned.
And, even though I am an experienced
corporate person – I’m no greenhorn to
the business world – I still learned a lot,
and it reinforced a lot of what I already
knew.”
But a course comes to nothing if the
tutors can’t get the message across.
WelTec gets an “excellent” from Leah
Seno in that regard.
“They were first class. Very supportive. One tutor in particular - Robert
Nelson - I couldn’t have asked for a
better tutor than him. He was extremely
helpful and extremely motivating. He
supplied all the resources and facilities
I needed, even going out of his way to
assist me even when his schedules were
very tight. He did this with all of his students. He was there to really drive me,
and push me to become the best I could.
I couldn’t have accomplished what I did
without him.”
The Petone campus Learning Commons proved so helpful to Leah in her
studies that she says she almost lived
there.
“I loved the learning commons. The
staff there thought I was a staff member
because I would be there all the time,
it was so conducive to learning. All the
conveniences are there. It is comfortable
and warm – especially during winter
months – and it has all the resources I
needed to succeed in my studies. I just
loved hanging out there and doing my
stuff.”
Now it’s the transition period for Leah
Seno. “I’m working at WelTec on a
temporary appointment, and I’m looking
around for something more permanent.”
She is ready and she’s armed with
what it takes to be a big success.
