The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is raising money to bring nationally known speakers and exhibits to Spiegel Grove, update security systems and more through its annual Gateway to the Future appeal. The goal is to raise $115,000 by June 30. The money would go toward improvements that would continue to enhance the visitor experience at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. Maggie Clark Martha Dinwiddie Nancy Leavitt Mike Gilbert Maggie Clark, one of the Gateway to the Mike Gilbert, local historian and fellow Gateway to the Future campaign chairpersons and great-granddaughter of Future campaign chairman, said the campaign would help President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes, said the make improvements that would increase HPLM’s ability to funding is needed to help HPLM maintain the facilities and serve its patrons, whether they are local or live in other states. continue to evolve to meet the needs of today’s visitors. “The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums does a lot “It’s very important for people of the community and of things for the public, and this is another way to bring that travelers to see what the president did and what the issues of out,” Gilbert said. “Any time I needed help, the staff always that time period were,” said Clark, of Rosemead, California, gave it and were always cheerful.” who attended HPLM’s Centennial Celebration and Hayes Clark’s sisters, Martha Dinwiddie of Nevada City, Family Reunion over Memorial Day weekend. “Those issues California, and Nancy Leavitt, of Readfield, Maine, also are are still relevant today. Webb Hayes bought a set of Spanish armor and helmet in the Philippines, he thought they had come from Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Webb, who was fighting for U.S. forces in the Philippine Insurrection at the time, decided they would be perfect for his family’s collection of historical artifacts – a opens collection his father, Rutherford B. Hayes, had started decades earlier - and he took them home to Spiegel Grove. Over the years, Hayes Presidential Library & Museums staff have learned through research that the armor and helmet were more likely made during the 19th century by Moro tribesmen, who were skilled metal workers and imitated Spanish designs. Nonetheless, the items are historical and demonstrate the dedication and passion Webb, HPLM’s founder, had for uncovering and preserving history. That is why the armor and helmet are some of the artifacts included in the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ special exhibit “100 Moments: Celebrating a Please see “100 Moments”, page 3 From the executive director I had the honor of speaking at the annual conference of the American Association of State and Local History, which was in Detroit last month. During the session, called Small Museums, Big Impact!, we discussed tackling challenges to create significant and meaningful organizational change. My fellow panelists were Berlin Loa from The Museum of Casa Grande in Casa Grande, Arizona, and Cheryl Thornhill from the Museum of the Mississippi Delta in Greenwood, Mississippi. Although the focus of my remarks was on strategic planning as a critical part of the change process, a strong secondary theme naturally became partnerships and teamwork. From the earliest stages of our planning, we wanted the celebration to be about more than us. But in retrospect, I don’t think we realized even then how much we would accomplish due to the creativity and helpfulness of our partners. From great ideas and volunteers to financial support and pontoon boats, our collaborators offered up whatever assistance they could provide. We thoroughly enjoyed growing relationships within our own community and across the nation. We were particularly delighted to be the inspiration for change in other entities, such as the renaming of the Skilled Trades Building at Terra State Community College to the Rutherford B. Hayes Skilled Trades Center (story in an upcoming issue of The Statesman) and also the beautiful enhancements made to downtown Fremont (see article below). Success! Executive Director Christie While we Weininger fires a cannon at the Independence Day Concert. have sent thank you notes and held a special reception and museum tour just for our amazing staff and partners, it doesn’t seem like we can ever do enough to truly express our gratitude. In an article in the Fremont News Messenger, journalist Roy Wilhelm commented on our successful effort to make our Centennial Celebration a true community-wide event with involvement from a variety of groups and people. It meant so much to us to be commended in this way. As we get to that time of year when we focus on our blessings, I am tremendously thankful for the partnerships that have helped us achieve our dreams. What fun it will be to build upon these rich relationships as we develop and reach the next set of goals! Working with partners accomplishes more performance. Hayes, the great-grandson of President and Lucy Hayes, was one of the first Hayes family members I met in 2007 when I came to work at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. We Scott Hayes chats with Kathy Boukissen, director of development, have been friends in the Hayes Family Gallery. ever since. In September, it was a joy to have Scott visit the new exhibit galleries. He was in awe of the changes and greatly appreciated how his great-grandfather’s accomplishments are presented to everyone who visits. The interactive components of the new exhibits allowed him to see, for the first time, family video clips of himself as a child with his brothers and parents. Some of the videos included childhood visits to Col. Webb and Mary Hayes’ home, the founders of our library and museum. He has very fond memories of Aunt Mary and her kindness. He shared with us how it was so important for him and his brothers to impress their Uncle Webb because they had the utmost respect for him. In 20ll, Scott allowed me to interview him and tape a video for our Gateway to the Future campaign. Scott is not one to call attention to himself, however, he hoped he could share why it is so important to support the efforts and vision the board of trustees and staff have for the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. Living in the Hayes Home for many years gave Scott an insight of Spiegel Grove few others have. He is the last of his generation to have lived in the Hayes Home and continues to be involved on the Board of Trustees; and held the position as president for many years. Scott is involved with our Gateway to the Future annual appeal, which continues to flourish since its inception in 2009. The first years the appeal was mostly just a mailing solicitation, and we raised $40,000 to $60,000. Now we have a committee of volunteers who personally reach out to our “friends” to thank them for their past support and ask them to consider supporting this annual campaign. With the committee’s help, we have raised more than $110,000 annually. With our efforts focused on the Centennial Campaign, we were not able to put as much personal effort into last year’s Gateway to the Future, but we are excited to have still raised $94,000 plus 100 new donors. What does this tell us? That you believe in our efforts to move this organization to a higher level and be a leader in presidential libraries. THANK YOU. It is our hope that you consider a gift to this year’s Gateway to the Future annual appeal. I ask you to follow Scott B. Hayes’ example of financially supporting this campaign because the funds enable us to provide educational programs, attend to 25 acres of grounds at Spiegel Grove and maintain the museum, library and Hayes Home. Local historians and genealogists use these machines daily. The wood trim of the Hayes Home lantern, the set of windows at the top of the home that offer a 360-degree view of Spiegel Grove, needs to be painted. The lantern is a difficult place for painters to reach and requires a contractor who has special equipment to get to it. HPLM would like to set up a fund for painting the wood trim of the 31-room mansion so that it can complete painting as needed and protect the woodwork. On the grounds, the fence around Spiegel Grove has been Fall 2016 damaged and bent in areas over the years and needs repair. Staff also would like to implement a schedule for caring for, maintaining and replacing trees on the 25-acre site. Gateway to the Future funding also would pay for upgrading interior security for the new museum exhibits and exterior security on the property. HPLM usually offers two to three special exhibits each year. Traveling exhibits usually have fees, and Gateway to the Future funds would help bring high-profile exhibits to the facility. Funds also would be used for speaker fees to bring in well-known speakers. Gateway to the Future also would continue to fund daily operations and HPLM’s educational programs and classes. page 7 RECOGNIZING DONORS AND MEMBERS Third quarter 2016: July-September Cash and pledges = $168,444 Centennial Campaign Jim and Amy (Miller) Chapman The Depot Walter & Jean Hayes Centennial Farm to Table Sponsor: Community Health Services Christmas Dinner Tickets Bill & Karen Alge Louann Artiaga Kenneth & Barbara Bell M/M Matthew Bell Cyrus & Rebecca Connors Dr. Carlos De Carvalho, Carol Greenberg, Nellie Greenberg Wayne & Madeline Doble Edward Duliba John & Diane Fouts Paul & Sande Gottron Frederick & Susan Hany M/M Elliot Herscher Skip & Ellen Honsperger James & Sherry Klopp Andrew & Sandra Lingler Chuck & Jeri Miller Darla Nolder John & Marie Paulson Dr. /Mrs. Ralph Peters Glenn Rees M/M Roger Rhodes Richard & Kathryn Smith John V. While he was here, he shared some of his memories of growing up at Spiegel Grove. In the Hayes Family Gallery, he found his photo on the family tree and recognized other family members, who he hadn’t seen since his childhood. He was pleased that six great-grandchildren of Rutherford and Lucy Hayes from various parts of the country attended the Hayes family reunion in May. He talked about his parents and aunt and uncle, Col. Webb Cook Hayes and Mary Miller Hayes. “Aunt Mary was one of the great ladies,” he said. “We loved her. She had a reputation for being very kind and honest with people.” She balanced out her husband, a military man who commanded respect. “He had a great charm and a toughness about him. Everyone admired him,” Scott said. “I don’t think the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums would exist without my Uncle Webb.” The renovations to the museum have carried on Webb’s vision of the institution as a place for research and learning, Scott said. “This is incredible,” he said. “This renovation is done in such a wonderfully tasteful way.” page 10 Clifton Truman Daniel, grandson of President Harry and First Lady Bess Truman, shared stories of his grandparents during the annual Lecture on the Presidency on Oct. 2 at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. He also talked about his visits to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, where U.S. forces dropped atomic bombs during World War II. President Truman made the difficult decision to use the atomic bomb. Lecture on the Presidency was sponsored by National Machinery Foundation. Before the lecture, members of the military laid a wreath at President Hayes’ tomb during a ceremony in honor of Hayes’ birthday, which is Oct. 4. HPLM is on Instagram The Rutherford B. Denton, who staff recognized when he arrived, has had numerous roles in TV and theater, including starring in the show “Desperate Housewives.” He is currently working on Hallmark Channel’s “The Good Witch.” While at Spiegel Grove, he toured the Hayes Home and Museum and greatly enjoyed his visit. “Of the numerous Presidential libraries and museums I have visited, none is more impressive than the first the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums,” he said. “From the incredible amount of original furnishings in the stunningly preserved home to the wealth of knowledge in the friendly staff, this is a must-see for anyone interested in American politics.” Denton is pictured standing at the replica of the Resolute Desk in the Presidents Gallery of the museum.
