Danke— Tom Calhoun, Oktoberfest Chairperson
This year’s Oktoberfest had many new changes. The highlight was the performance put on
by Art Beat Live! This portion alone raised over
$5,500 for Saint Paul Catholic School! The cover band Hooked on Sonics was also new this year and they were VERY entertaining for
all! Also new in 2016 was online ticketing through Greater Giving, credit card payments
through Square, authentic Bavarian pretzels, and an AMAZING class basket silent auction.
Other highlights included the controlled chaos in the Gnome Zone, four continually spooky
hayrides, one beautifully decorated tent, outstanding German cuisine and craft beers provided by Shoreline Brewery, a hilarious pie eating contest and face-painting.

Helping Our Community
We are participating in our Valpo Family YMCA’s Shoe Drive. By donating gently used shoes we will
help our YMCA provide funding for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a
12-week program offered free to cancer survivors in our community. The program runs only with fundraising efforts.
Donated shoes will be cleaned, repaired and given a new lease on life in developing nations as inventory
for small business owners in developing countries. The YMCA’s goal is to fill 300 bags of 25 pairs of shoes. If
they reach their goal, they will earn $3,000.00 toward their LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.
We at Saint Paul will collect shoes through November 22, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break.
Blazing a Trail— Marquette High School News
Jake Tarnow covered the 5k course at Sunset Hill Farms in Valparaiso in 17:44 on
Saturday morning, earning a spot in next Saturday’s IHSAA Regional to be held at New Prairie.
Tarnow’s finish helped boost the Marquette Catholic High School boys cross country team to a
10th-place finish at Saturday’s Sectional event. On the girls’ side, sophomore Rory Neary paced
the Lady Blazers to a 10th-place result by virtue of her 26:18.75 time.
“I’m incredibly proud of not only Jake for his performance today, but really the
entire team. I’m pleased with the number of students we had participate in cross
country this year and they showed signs of improvement week by week. They’re
a great group of kids, and Jake deserves this honor,” head cross country
coach Katie Collignon said.
