Khan Academy Parent Letter ES

Greetings Parents,
Establishing a solid foundation of basic mathematical skills in elementary school is necessary
for students to be successful as they progress through their educational careers. Regular
practice is one key component in establishing this foundation. As the SSIS Elementary
Math/Science Coach, I have been searching for an online tutorial/practice venue for our SSIS
students to continue mathematical practices both in and out of school.
After reviewing many options and having professional conversations with other international
school leaders and teachers, we believe Khan Academy is a solution that meets our student
and school needs exceptionally well. Khan Academy is a free online resource that allows
students to learn anytime, anywhere, with material that is uniquely appropriate for them.
Students can explore new topics and strengthen their math skills by using interactive practice
and tutorials. As students learn, their activity feeds into reports that show important
information such as strengths and weaknesses in a particular concept. By using Khan
Academy, we will be able to provide a more personalized learning experience for your child.
We have been able to work with our SSIS Information Technology Department, Google for
Education and Clever to create password protected Khan Academy accounts that are
convenient for everyone involved and address all security issues.
If you want to see how your child is learning on Khan Academy, we encourage you to create
your own Khan Academy account as well. You will be able to see the subjects and concepts in
which your child is working, and there is plenty of material on the site for you to learn also.
Learning on Khan Academy is for adults as well as children. Simply go to
www.khanacademy.org and click “Sign Up” to get your own account. Your child can then add
you as a “coach,” so that you can monitor his/her progress.
If you have any questions about Khan Academy, feel free to contact your child’s classroom
teacher or me, the ES Math/Science Coach, Mr. Sullivan ([email protected]).
Thank you for your support.
Regards,
Mr. Shane Sullivan
