SPIKED SHOE CLUB NEWS Published by Hoyas Unlimited Spring 2007 2006-07 Georgetown Track and Field The Georgetown track & field program added more hardware to its trophy case this winter and hopes the progression of success continues until the spring and early summer for the 2007 outdoor season. As a team, the women's indoor squad won the 2007 BIG EAST Indoor Championship for the sixth time in program history and the first time since 2001. Along with the title, the coaching staff was named the BIG EAST Women's Indoor Staff of the Year at the conclusion of the season. The men were fourth at the BIG EAST and the next weekend, both the men and women were third at the respective IC4A and ECAC Championships. Individually, the indoor season was capped off with the women's distance medley relay of Hilary Bontz (G'07), Nana Hanson-Hall (C'07), Ashley Hubbard (N'08) and Elizabeth Maloy (C'07) garnering All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. The quartet was seventh in the field, marking the 12th time in 14 years that the Hoyas earned All-America status in the women's distance medley relay. Georgetown dominated the women's DMR throughout the season, also winning the event at the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. The same group as the NCAAs won at the ECACs, while at the BIG EAST, Abigail Johnson (N'10) and Joanna Rodgers (N'08) joined Bontz and Maloy. In addition to the DMR, Georgetown had success in the other relays, placing second in the 4x800m and third in the 4x400m relay at the conference championship. The Hoya women also had two individual BIG EAST champions, as Hubbard won the 500m and Maloy took home the 3000m crown. Hubbard was the eighth Hoya to win the 500m at the indoor games, while Maloy was the first to cross first in the 3000m. Three other Hoyas earned All-BIG EAST honors, as Bontz was third in the mile, Avril Ogrodnick (F'09) was third in the 1000m and Renee Tomlin (C'10) was third in the 800m. Matt DeBole (N’07) On the men's side, a handful of student-athletes earned All-BIG EAST honors, led by the 4x800m relay of Michael Banks (B'08), Alex Bean (C'10), Matt DeBole (N'07) and John Maloy (C'10) who finished second. The distance medley relay of Banks, DeBole, Danny Harris (C'10) and Levi Miller (C'09) was third, while individually, Miller was third in the 3000m, Dan Nunn (C'08) was third in the 5000m and Terrell Gissendanner (C'09) was third in the 60m hurdles. Earlier in the season, Kenny Mitchell (C'09) became the fastest runner in Georgetown history, breaking the school record in the 60m dash, running 6.80. Buky Bamigboye (C'09) and Tanore Barrow (C'10) also set new school-bests in the pentathlon and shot put, respectively, for the women. The Hoyas were one of nine schools to travel both their men's and women's teams to the NCAA Cross Buky Bamigboye (C’09) Country Championship, having the women place 16th and the men 24th. Melissa Grelli (B'08) was the top finisher for the women in 39th, followed by Elizabeth Maloy in 44th. Georgetown qualified with a strong showing at the Mid-Atlantic Region Championships. The men won their third-straight regional title, while the women were second. Eight Hoyas earned All-Mid Atlantic region honors, led by two individual runner-up finishes by DeBole and John Maloy. In addition to their success at the nationals and regionals, both squads were second at the BIG EAST Championship and had two team titles each early in the season. DeBole was the top Hoya finisher on the men's side at the BIG EAST, placing fifth. Elizabeth Maloy was a standout on the women's team, placing third at the BIG EAST, 10th at the Pre-Nationals and winning two individual titles. Grelli was close behind Maloy all season, finishing third at the Mid-Atlantic regional, eighth at the BIG EAST and crossing third twice in the first two races. Academically, the women's cross country team received multiple academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), including earning NCAA Division I Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team honors and having three individuals named to the All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team. Grelli, Maggie Infeld (C’08) and Elizabeth Maloy garnered the individual accolades. Also, Brian Dalpiaz (C'07) was the recipient of the 2006-07 BIG EAST/Aéropostale Male Scholar-Athlete Award, representing Georgetown. Coach’s Corner Dear Alumni and Friends, easy, we always have the individuals necessary to make it possible. We are emerging from a period of uncertainty in athletics at Georgetown, but as our athletic department starts to stabilize, attempts to find a firm financial footing and go about the business of setting meaningful and realistic goals, I want to take this time to tell you we in track and field are alive and well. Our history and tradition have already set the standard for excellence in athletics at Georgetown, more so than any other sport in the school's history. We now have workout venues that are more than adequate to support our efforts. This past semester 23 of our 62 men and women track and field athletes earned dean's list honors (3.5 or higher). Right now, however, the thing that excites me most is the number of current student athletes on our roster who are willing to be held to that "higher standard." Many, many of them are willing to set high goals and accept the challenges and expectations with a sometimes naïve, but always determined and focused resolve to succeed. We are young and we must be patient, but it is a great time for Georgetown track and field. Our coaches and athletes understand the challenge and look forward to the coming weeks, months and years. High goals and expectations do funny things to people. Some people immediately rise to the challenge, embrace the opportunity to be tested and perform; regardless of their ability level they just go out and take their best shot. Others want to "get it" but struggle with the reality of the responsibilities and the uncertainty of future success. Ultimately they have to make a decision; either "settle" for a lesser goal or find the courage necessary to confront and overcome the many barriers to exploring their own greatness. The final group is more than happy to give what they feel like, take what they can and be critical of anyone who disagrees with their position or takes another path. I suspect most of us can relate to this as we think about our own experiences on athletic teams, jobs, or life in general. We watch our children struggle with these same issues and while we want to help, we know everyone must, as they grow and mature, come to terms with these things on their own in their own good time. Hopefully we are able to provide meaningful guidance and direction and have a positive impact on the end result. In the years I have been at Georgetown and for years before, we succeeded in bringing special individuals to campus; those who came to study and learned to be great athletes or those who came to campus to be great athletes and learned to be quality students. In between there were many individuals who shouldered the load and despite many obstacles did amazing things. Many of you represent Georgetown's best success stories. The quality we see in our track and field alumni and students is second to none and while we don't always have the resources we need to make the journey Thank you again to all of you who continually and generously support our efforts. Recently many of you have stepped up and helped us more than ever. Our future is bright, but we still rely on you to help us make it happen. Don't underestimate the impact of your gifts and support when it comes time for the University to prioritize and plan for our athletic future. Our greatest asset is our product: you. Help us continue to produce the best. Jim Freel (B'74) Garden City, NY SVP of HSBC Bank USA involved with commercial real estate finance. Have four children and four grandchildren (fifth on the way). My son graduated Georgetown in 1997 and my youngest, Lindsey, is presently a freshman at G'town. I have served as a Chairman of GU's AAP Committee on Long Island for the past 22 years. Gave up running a few years ago ... bad knees. Don't keep up with many former track guys though I have seen Justin Gubbins (C'74) a few times. Saw Conrad Zink (C'76), Louie Fabrizio (C'74), Jerry Ottavino (C'74) and a few others at a reunion a few years ago. I see Bob Volk (B'74) regularly. Saw Frank Rienzo at a GSP reception last Spring; he looks great. Would love to reunite with others from the classes of 1972-75. Stump: "where are you?" Tom Traina (B'74) Lavallette, NJ Spending some nice quiet time here at the beach after 28 years in the Air Force. I retired in May 2004. John D Hallinan (C'75) Peekskill, NY Still running, although more of a "weekend warrior" now. Did run a 2:48 marathon, but that was when I was young and in shape! Bill Ramey (C'76) Memphis, TN I'm still working at Federal Express in Memphis where I've worked the last twenty-three years(!). I'm currently managing the business unit of Feeder Aircraft Operations (it's like our regional airline). It's been a good ride. I'm still running and competing regularly. In fact, I qualified last September for four events in the National Senior Olympics (my daughters call it the "Geezer Games"), which will be held next July in Louisville. I will be competing in the 400, 800, 1500, and the 5K. I owe a lot to Georgetown, the great coach we had in Joe Lang, and my teammates who encouraged and inspired me for laying the foundation that would enable me to still be competing thirty years (can it be?!) later. How terrific it would be to find some of my old teammates running in Louisville this summer. My wife Sheryl & I have two daughters, one a freshman at NYU, and another who is a sophomore in high school here. And, Sheryl's son has made us grandparents. God's been good to us. Brian Sullivan (F'79) Dana Point, CA After a dozen years of living by the California coast I've come to love how running on the sand is good for soon-to-be 50-year-old knees that have too many miles on them! I work from home in a small publishing and seminar business with my wife, Tracie, and continue to do Georgetown alumni interviewing. I dabbled in triathlons, and dreamed of masters track, but couldn't ever match the old-man successes of an old teammate, Keith Royster. Good work Keith!
