Dear Friends,
Individuals - 10,621 • Units - 4,886
I
t is during difficult times that as a community, we
find out what we are truly made of. The past year
has certainly provided opportunities for us to test
our mettle and consider our priorities. Fortunately,
the strength of community support and the courage
of our staff and volunteers made it possible for the
YMCA of Greater Flint to stay true to our mission
throughout 2009, even as we adapted to the
economic challenges of the past year.
Thanks to our strong board, dedicated staff, caring
volunteers and generous community, the YMCA of
Greater Flint was able to exceed our fundraising goal
for our Partner with Youth Campaign. As we began
2009 the amount of requests for financial assistance
grew, as families experiencing hardships were on the
rise in our community. The success of our Partner
with Youth Campaign has allowed us to meet the
growing demand for assistance in our community.
As we look towards 2010, we know we are going to
be faced with new challenges as many families are
still facing difficulties in our communities. We want
to thank you in advance for your ongoing support
and investment in our community through the work
of the YMCA. Our very generous donors, members,
partners and volunteers help the YMCA facilitate life
changing experiences for kids, adults and families in
the community. We have a history of YMCA friends
who ensure our ongoing success and work. We know
2010 will be no different, and we appreciate your
confidence in us.
It is a pleasure serving you and our community,
Frederick (Fritz) Cheek

GOLF OUTING
• The 23rd Annual YMCA of Greater Flint Golf Scramble
was held on Monday, June 8th at the beautiful Spring
Meadows Country Club in Linden. The event featured
over 90 participants and raised $6,600 for the Partner
with Youth Campaign.
SOS PROGRAM - DOWNTOWN BRANCH
• The Save Our Schools (S.O.S) Program is one of the
many programs offered at the YMCA. This program is
offered free to the students at Northridge Academy, and
is made possible through the Partner with Youth Campaign. Since
the initial launch, 150 children have walked in and out the doors of
the YMCA of Greater Flint weekly for swimming lessons, character
development and team building activities. During the school year
these students’ grew in ways immeasurable on any scale. The selfconfidence gained and character strengthened during this program
will benefit these students far into their bright futures.
CAMP COPNECONIC
• YMCA Camp Copneconic experienced an amazing year of unabated
fun and community involvement! The new ‘Moby’s Dock’ Fishing
Platform donated by the Dooge Foundation brought smiles to the
2,203 resident campers. The new fleet of twenty mountain Bikes
donated by the DELMAC Fund helped our Day Camp to promote
bicycling in the out-of-doors to our 1,614 day campers. In this year
of economic downturn, YMCA Camp Copneconic provided over 528
youth with scholarship assistance. Like never before, the community
rallied behind the mission of the YMCA to ensure that the camping
experiences for thousands of children did not miss a beat!
TORPEDOES SWIM TEAM - PIERSON ROAD
• The YMCA of Greater Flint Torpedoes Swim Team is for mentally and physically challenged individuals.
Currently there are 12 athletes ranging in age from 7-26 years, and 4 Coaches from the Pierson Road
YMCA Aquatics Staff. For the past 5 years, the YMCA of Greater Flint- Pierson Road has proudly hosted the
Torpedoes Swim Team as their home team. Throughout the swimming season the Torpedoes competed in
three swim meets against other teams with similar disabilities in the Genesee County Area.
PARTNER WITH YOUTH
• In 2009, 586 people decided to help change the lives of youth in our community by donating
to the YMCA Partner with Youth Campaign. YMCA of Greater Flint wishes to thank all of the
generous donors who helped us surpass our goal of $260,000, raising a total of $276,901.
The Partner with Youth Campaign provides the opportunity for children in the community to
participate in various YMCA programs aside from their ability to pay.
CAMP BOOMERANG
• Camp Boomerang’s inaugural summer day camp was a big success, serving 291 kids from
Flint and Genesee County over 9 sessions. The new outdoor programming and outstanding
counselors provided enjoyment and memories to the campers that will last a lifetime. We look
forward to more improvements and growth in the summer of 2010!
YMCA FLINT FALCONS
• In 2009 the Flint Falcons Swim team welcomed more than 20 new swimmers. These new swimmers added to the continued
success of the Flint Falcons. The YMCA Flint Falcons competed in the Great Lakes YMCA national zone competition, where they
were up against 100 teams from 5 different states. Despite the challenging competition, the Falcons celebrated a 2nd place finish.
The team achieved more success at the 2009 Championship State Meet where the 9 & up
YMCA of
group placed 2nd, and the 8 & up group placed 4th.
