From the Desk of Ms. Clarrett
Dear Parents,
Technology is part of our everyday world, and at East Dover I have
noticed that even children as young as 3rd grade have some kind of
electronic device. Below are some tips to help navigate your child’s use of
technology.

Give your child a break from technology and remove items like
cell phones and tablets from your child’s bedroom to allow them to
sleep for a solid eight hours.
Monitor your child’s text messages to make sure that they are not
being cyber bullied.
Know the age that your child must be to open accounts with
Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. In most cases your child must
be older than 13 years of age to have an account.
Use technology wisely and to enhance your child’s learning.
Websites such as abcya.com and discoverykids.com are a few
websites students can use to practice skills.
Be sure to tell students that cell phones are to be placed in lockers
when they arrive at school.
January Kindergarten News
In language arts, we are concentrating on the letters, their sounds and how
to form words. Our sight word list is rapidly growing. Please continue to
practice these words at home. In writing, students are expected to write a
complete sentence using our sight words. The children’s ability to
participate in discussions, actively listen to stories, and talk in complete
sentences are skills we are working on daily. In math, we’ve been using
connecting cubes as manipulatives as we practice solving and writing
Important Phone Numbers
addition sentences. The Kindergarten classes will be beginning subtraction

8th grade G&T science:
Our G& T science class has been integrating engineering and science into building wind turbines. The
wind turbines must convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Students experimented with
different materials and designs to create the most efficient wind turbine. The students competed to see
which wind turbine was most efficient and the winners for Mrs. Franco’s class were…drumroll...Nour,
Lauren, Stephanie, and Edith. Congratulations to all students for a job well done!
The 7th grade art students have been busy creating wonderful art work! They have recently completed a unit
on graffiti where they developed a traditional graffiti piece on a "brick" wall. They used measuring skills,
that will be useful during testing, to draw their brick wall, and then they created their name in graffiti style
lettering. Most recently, the students have been working on a watercolor painting. They have learned the
many techniques they can use to create beautiful watercolor paintings!
Family Life Grades 7&8
In Mr. Keltner’s family life classes, students are learning about the effect stress can have on their lives.
Through the use of deep breathing exercises, guided meditations, and muscle relaxation, students are
beginning to understand a variety of techniques they can use to combat their stress. Students will soon be
moving onto the studying Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Unit. In this unit, they will learn terminology
and concepts associated with these topics, as well as the ability to recognize how these concepts impact their
overall wellness.
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more
time.”
-Thomas A. Edison
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus
character – that is the goal of true education. “
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mrs. Baker’s eighth grade language arts classes began the third unit in the new
Collections textbook: The March Towards Freedom. Students worked in groups to
answer the following essential questions and will revisit their responses throughout the
unit:
How are prejudice and bias created? How do we overcome them?
What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to issues of social justice?
Can literature serve as a vehicle for social change? How?
When should an individual take a stand against what he/she believes to be an
injustice? What are the most effective ways to do this?
Students are making connections with the past by learning about Abraham Lincoln,
Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, and other famous historical figures who have
shaped the future.
