BEYE SCHOOL SPELLING BEE-2nd Grade A good old-fashioned Spelling Bee is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th at 6:30 p.m. for Grades 2 through 5. This event will take place in the Beye School auditorium. Each grade will compete separately as its own grade group. All students will receive a prize for participating in this friendly competition. Word lists and rules are attached to this sign-up form. Please take time to study this word list. The words will be taken right from the attached list, until we exhaust that list. After that point, we will move to an unpublished challenge list (and for all of you who have been to spelling bees in the past, you know that your third grader might need to know how to spell the word “croissant” and second graders should know the word “sunbonnet”). The details: 1. Submit your completed registration form by Monday, January 14 h to your homeroom teacher. 2. Practice the published word list. 3. Join us for an informal practice session on Wednesday, January 16 from 2:002:45 in the Auditorium. 4. Direct any questions you may have to Paul Manus [email protected] or Kathy Stohr [email protected] (383-0326) 5. Walk-ins welcome. Every student registering for the Spelling Bee will receive a word list from which to study. 2. Word lists will be taken directly from this word list during competition. In the event of a tie, words will be taken from an unpublished ‘tie breaker’ list. 3. If at any time three consecutive rounds are completed while using the published word list without any elimination, words from the unpublished list may be used. When the unpublished word lists are used, alternate spelling will be accepted if found in the dictionary used by the Judges. 4. Students are asked not to bring the word list to the competition. 5. The Spelling Bee will consist of only one round. Spellers are asked to sit down after misspelling a word. The round will continue until only 2 spellers are left standing. 6. The Bee will be conducted in rounds by grade. Students will only be competing against others from the same grade. 7. At the end of the Bee, there will be a champion, a 2nd place and 3rd place finisher for each grade. 8. During competition, each student will be given a word to spell by the Pronouncer. The student is expected to say the word, spell the word, and say the word again. The student will not be disqualified if they do not pronounce the word before or after spelling it. 9. If the student misspells the word, they are out of the competition, except when there are two spellers remaining. (See Rule 17). The next word on the Pronouncer’s list is given to the next speller. 10. The speller may ask the Pronouncer to repeat the word, define it, and/or use it in a sentence. 11. If a word has a homonym, the Pronouncer will indicate which word is to be spelled. 12. Having started to spell a word, a speller may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from the beginning, but in retracing there can be no change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced. If letters or their sequences are changed in the respelling, the speller is eliminated. 13. The Judges may disqualify any speller who ignores a request to start spelling. 14. The role of the Pronouncer is to correctly pronounce the word and give a definition and/or sentence at the speller’s request. 15. A maximum of 30 seconds will be allowed to pronounce the word and complete the spelling of the word. 16. The role of the Judge is to determine whether the student has spelled the word correctly. The Judge’s decision shall be final on all questions. 17. When there are two spellers remaining, the elimination process changes. When one speller misspells a word, the other speller is given the same word to spell. If the second speller spells that word correctly, plus the next word on the Pronouncer’s list, then that speller is declared the champion. If both spellers misspell the same word, the Bee continues with the speller who first misspelled the word being given a new word to spell. 18. When there are two spellers remaining and five consecutive rounds are completed without a winner, the judges may declare a tie. 19. HAVE FUN!!! *Please contact Kathy Stohr (383-0326, [email protected]) or Paul Manus ([email protected]) if you have any questions.
