rivate galleries become as
inviting and intimate as living
rooms during Just Off Madison,
an event where 13 New York City
galleries open their doors to the
public during American art auction
season. The informal open house
can be instrumental in converting
repeat customers, something Just Off
Madison organizer Betty Krulik can
attest to.
“I once had a guy call me in July
who had been at Just Off Madison in
May and asked if he could come in,”
says Krulik, owner of Betty Krulik
Fine Art, Ltd. “He ended up buying
half a million dollars worth of art from
me. People often keep our brochures
and come in months later, and
I find the event helps make a personal
connection between the private
dealers and the public.”
Just Off Madison occurs twice
yearly, with galleries between Fifth
and Park Avenues and 67th and 79th
Streets participating. This year’s Just
Off Madison occurs after the Bonhams’
American Art Auction and Sotheby’s
American Art Auction on the same
day, and the day before the Christies’
American Art Auction, with the galleries
showing off their best offerings of
historical American fine art. Just
Off Madison has taken place since
November 2008, and this year, a new
gallery, David Tunick, Inc. Prints and
Drawings, joins the roster.

market, owner David Tunick knows
the value of galleries coming together
in support of each other.
“Every gallery that participates in
Just Off Madison is going to want to
put their best foot forward,” Tunick
says. “I’m looking forward to meeting
collectors who perhaps we haven’t
met before.” The gallery will feature
Winslow Homer etching Fly Fishing,
Saranac Lake, which came to the
venue from a museum, and which
joins works by Edward Hopper, James
Abbott McNeill Whistler, and Mary
Cassatt at the gallery.

the relaxed atmosphere encourages
camaraderie among patrons and
galleries, enhanced by optimal New
York City spring weather.
“Every Just Off Madison event is
an enjoyable, festive and successful
evening which brings together old
friends and new patrons in our
welcoming, artful salon,” say Mindy
Moak, owner/partner at MME Fine
Art, LLC. Her gallery features the
exhibition Summer Bliss – Americans
at Play, which she says should be
especially enticing after the winter
months, and works on display include
those by Everett Shinn, Frank
DuMond, Martha Walter, and more.
Offerings aren’t limited to
paintings and drawings—visitors may
find sculptural works at venues such
as Conner ∙ Rosenkranz, and Avery
Galleries features a mirror by Charles
Prendergast. Other highlights include
Ashcan and Steiglitz Circle offerings
at Menconi + Schoelkopf; works by
Theodore Robinson and Willard
Leroy Metcalf at Betty Krulik Fine
Art, Ltd.; a Joseph Fiore pastel
exhibition at Meredith Ward Fine
Art; and figurative works by artists

some of the highest quality offerings
by galleries, all within walking

visitors to the gallery who appreciate
this kind of visual dialogue between
artists,” says Meredith Ward Fine Art
owner Meredith Ward, who notes
the gallery’s Joseph Fiore pastel
exhibition will be accompanied by
rare oils by Arthur Dove, oils and
watercolors by John Marin, and
more. “We find that our gallery
setting is a wonderful way to explore
those relationships, and we are
looking forward to seeing friends
and colleagues as they make the
rounds.”
